HP dv6z AMD Llano (6XXX series) Owners Lounge
-
You've been stickied.
I added the Select Edition line to this thread too so that we won't have too many owner threads popping up all over the place.
Also have the NBR driver thread up too:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...dv7-6xxx-envy-14-2xxx-envy-17-2xxx-intel.html
Would it also be fine if the dv7-6XXX series be added to this thread as well? They are similar enough to warrant having just one owners thread for now, but it's your call. -
and of course plz add dv7 here. I will fix title.

It's nice to see it all in one lounge.
Perhaps you'll add the Llano-based dv6z and dv7z when they come out?
You guys neglect the AMD models here (except ultraportables)...

Hi I am just wondering if you order today/very recently/soon if you will get the new style body or the old one? My only real concern on this laptop is the touchpad clicker, the old model one is virtually unusable (hard to click, all one piece w/ pad) but it appears in the new model it may be fixed/better.
Anyone confirm with HP on which touchpad you get ordering the Sandy Bridge with the big discount? Thanks, this forum and everyone's contributions have helped a ton in my research for a new laptop!

With the addition of the 500 coupon, the new dv6tqe is cheaper than what I had paid for my current dv6. Will HP refund the difference?

?
people are funny. -

Thanks everyone for your input.
Also, I see that I can upgrade the RAM from 6gb to 8gb for $60. Can anyone tell me if I will see a significant difference with the 8gb ? I will not be using my laptop for gaming. If anything, just a little music production for fun.
Opinions ? Thanks !
EDIT: dv7tqe -
I just ordered a custom dv7t Quad Edition 3 days ago, 2 days before the announcement of the new model. So, I went back and compared the custom build choices. I haven't had a chance to get into the details, but at this point I can see a few key differences between the new offering and what I ordered. There's a different finish on the case (both of which look fine to me), different video card options (Radeon 6490M and 6770M vs my 6570M), and the new version doesn't list an option for a full HD display (which I seriously considered but did not buy).
The spec-built price difference is about $50. I also received a 28% discount, which may not be valid with the new version. (In my case, that was worth $515+.) And, my build date is still two and a half weeks out (March 31).
So, here's a question for anybody that has ever placed a custom order during a model change transition. Is there really any chance that I'll end up with the new version? I wouldn't mind getting the 6700M series video card, but I wouldn't be happy with the 6400M series as a substitution.
EDIT:Oh, and does anybody know if the old model supports multi-touch on the touchpad like the new one? -
-
sorry - dual post

There are things I don't know... with my old HP, if both simms weren't identical ( Dual-channel architecture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ), access wasn't done the same way, and there was a speed penalty. I don't know whether that is still true, but I suspect it is... and if you make the decision in the future, don't expect the 2G module will be worth anything.

So regarding the new dv6t edition, do they have switchable graphics? I was reading in the other thread about the older series that people were only getting 2 hours of power on 6C batteries, yet hp still advertised a 5 hour battery life on the old order site. Does anyone have a guess about how long a 9cell battery on the new series will last? -
And no, you won't get the new version; you're going to get the version you ordered. -
-
-
So, for light/moderate gaming and HD/BluRay editing/playback, would the 6770M GMU option in the new version offer any substantial improvements over the 6570M that I ordered? If it would, I may consider changing my order. If I wouldn't notice any difference with my normal uses, I think I'll just keep my place in the queue and be happy with my "clearance priced" custom. -
Yes and works without rebooting. I could not find proper video but there are some from year 2008 over youtube. I assume that current envy users can inform us how it works. -
Also, note that the new model will have much better battery life thatnks to switchable graphics. -
For those that are wondering the 6GB of RAM that ships with the dv6 is 1333 according to HP support. I didn't find out though what PCxxxx it is, does anyone know? I was thinking of getting maybe a 4GB chip from newegg to upgrade it. Or do you think it would be noticeably better to install a matching pair of same brand (new) chips (2x4) and just try to sell the factory 4+2 on craigslist? Thanks!
EDIT: I find online it appears to be pc10666 (at least in the previous dv6's), i still wonder if i need to have same exact brand for full 8GB speed or if i can just add a kingston 4GB pc10666 1333 alongside the factory 4GB chip and try to selll the 2GB online, thanks! -
And your answers are indeed arrogant and irrelevant.
There are plenty of us sitting on last gen SB DV6/7's who are still on the fence about getting the new model. We purchased direct from HP in early January with a $500 off coupon.....only to find out that our mobo's were bad. We were ALL given a blanket extended return date (until 4/30/2011) and were told that our $500 off coupons WOULD be honored.
Some of us will go ahead a get a new DV6/7 right away, some will go with another brand do to some features that have been removed or not updated, some of us will go with an Envy, and some of us will wait a bit longer to see "hands on reviews" of the new DV6/7's posted here. -
I am pretty sure that it is 1333MHz and you should read:

(panthermark & fgehy, feel free to ignore) -
There were some links in one of the previous SB dv6 or SB dv7 threads that listed the brands used. I may go ahead and waste the extra $20 (over buying from Newegg) and get 8GB right out the door just to have matching stuff up front and not worry about it. We will see... I still don't know if I'm going with a new DV7, an Envy 17 3D (depending on the deal they cut me) or a different brand.... -
................. I'm speechless. That "B2" means that you may have gotten one of the bugged chipsets. The fixed one should say B3, I think. This needs to be confirmed ASAP, and if it's true I'd advise everyone here to avoid HP like the plague.
You should check which SATA ports are being used. -
More troublesome is the chipset version, can someone more knowledgeable than me confirm this is the buggy version? If so I will have to cancel right away, thanks! -
Yikes! "The Intel 6 series chipsets with step B2 have been recalled due to a hardware bug that causes their 3 Gbits/s Serial ATA to degrade over time until they become unusable. Step B3 of the Intel 6 series chipsets will have the fix for this. "
From wikipedia: List of Intel chipsets - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia -
@Jerohm - can you please confirm when you ordered your dv6tqe and is it the 6xxxx version body? In the meantime i'm going to chat the HP support and try to get an answer as to which chipset the one ordered today will ship with, Thanks!
-
If you have time to google around a bit, you will find confirmation on this. I couldn't pick it off after minimal effort though. -
-
-
You shouldn't worry which chipset revision they are using now. To keep the prices the same, they just fixed the recalled chip by adding some simple solution compound to the affected area. There is no need to spend the time to reprogram the chip for an incremented version.
I'm pretty sure, the newly revised chips are pretty much the same, with that one step integrated into of the manufacture process. -
I really doubt anyone (Intel?) really wanted to just trash the B2 chips. They can't be used on desktop motherboards, so they are most likely gonna turn up somewhere innocuous. Are they going to advertise the fact? I doubt that either.
-
Ok thanks all for your info. I did some googling and came upon this:
Intel's 'SANDYBRIDGE' | Discussion Thread
If I get REV.2 it goes back is my thinking, I'd rather not buy a new computer and have some compound applied to the MOBO that might/might not resolve longterm SATA degradation. -
But most people just don't care or even understand.
Also, it is too much a hassle to be calling back until get the desired revision.
They can't trash them cause that would be way too expensive to rebuild the supply. Also, we have to wait a lot longer if they did. Might as well get the next generation chipset. -
