you can only update the ATI driver - if you try to update the intel part of the combo, your switchable graphics will be messed up. the HP's intel driver is what contains the switchable graphics option.

Ya, I was trying to get WiDi working and just wanted to post the experience. I've since reverted to factory Intel drivers + Catalyst 11.5 + Catalyst 11.5b hotfix and everything is working fine.
The Blu-Ray over WiDi thing was just kind of an experiment...I'll wait for the updated drivers. -

am wondering why am not able to overclock the ati 6770m , when i open sapphire trixx and press on the overclocking tab , it shows that the core clock , memory clock ,and the gpu voltage all set to 0 . and it seems that i cant change it.
the gpu switching seems to work well , i played crysis 2 at high setting with no problem, dirt 3 at full hd high setting but it seems that i cant play it full screen ,just windowed.
so please , can someone help me with the overclocking issue?
(by the way am using catalyst 11.5b ,i upgraded it without removing the old one , and overclocking didnt work with stock drivers
another thing , when i run ati tools , i get a popup that says:" The kernel mode driver does not seem to br running." and " a device driver is required for communication with your video hardware" -
For anyone wondering I just tried to install an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 in my dv6t quad edition and got the WLAN Module ID (702) error. I am running the F.14 bios. The part number from manufacture part number from provantage was 62230AN.HMWWB. The model number printed on the 6230 card was 62230ANHMW. Can anyone recommend a way to get this to work (hack the bios)? Can anyone recommmed a dual band, 2x2 300 Mbps wifi card that is know to work with this laptop? It kills me that HP would put a limitation like this baked into the BIOS. Just stupid, who do they think they are Apple?

IMO, HP has a fiasco on their hands with the new "auto-switching" graphics driver "feature". I've had two DV6's--one with and one without auto switching. the manual one worked great. the other didn't and wasted over 6 hours of my life trying with HP (and on my own) to get it to work. Someone at HP needs to wise up and fix this issue. -

I did not hear from the supervisor @ HP yesterday. I called and got a regular CS grunt and she said that she could see the notes and that he would be calling. There was no call today either, so I called around 4pm and asked for another supervisor if they could not get in touch with Peter Garcia. I got supervisor "Brandon" and he said Peter was out of the office. After being on the phone with Brandon for an hour he could not give me any answers and said I would have to wait for Peter to give me a call tomorrow.
After obviously voicing my extreme frustration in the fact that HP has no idea what the hell is going on, Peter told me he would call me in 24 hours, and 48 hours has gone by with no call (so why should I trust he will call tomorrow), and also the fact that only Peter holds the magical key and "email" that supposedly has all the answers from their corp execs, AND the fact that Brandon swears I will be waiting another 2 weeks for a new laptop because they have never heard of this "rush build" or "priority build" process - Brandon could tell I was getting pissed.
He mentioned a few times regarding the coupons and specials I got and said something to the effect that they have to check to see if they are still valid for this new laptop exchange. With that, I reminded him that this is HP's screw up, not mine and that I want things moving NOW, not a week from now. I was like hell they could have already been building the laptop for several days now, its been over 48 hours since I talked to Peter. I also mentioned how I was one of the ones that ordered the refresh dv7t quads mid march and waited over a month to get them, and they gave me 15% off. I said that in THIS case I waited 2 weeks for these dv7's and according to you I will be waiting another 2 weeks, so there is a month wait - I want ANOTHER 15% off these laptops.
If Peter or Brandon does not call me by tomorrow afternoon, I am going to be livid. I told Brandon that if I don't hear from them they will def be hearing from me. This is absolutely ridiculous that HP has no idea what is going on over a simple color change that THEY obviously made. -

*update* - here it is:
-
-
I pleaded with the tech and case manager to discuss this with their engineers. I'm getting stonewalled. -
Is there no way to just downgrade the GPU drivers to a previous version that supported manual switching?
-
-
-
overclocking is what we are discussing, but..
I think some people have it working, but not always to their satisfaction because some folks have mentioned that not all programs are recognizing the Radeon, but I think they should speak up for themselves as to what, if any issues they are having. HP failed to fix my first new DV6 that wouldn't share the internet via the Intel My Wifi and they still don't know WHY mine didn't work--they claim it works on the several they have in their tech lab. then I get another Dv6 and they can't make the graphics work. generally, if I can't fix something, it's almost never fixed by tech support, as I've been working with PC's since the 80's and have held numerous jobs in the field of hardware support, s/w support. Not saying I'm god's gift to the computer world, but I'm the one that generally figures out what's wrong and if I can't it's time for replacing parts. -
Well, I can guess that the next major HP AMD update for all dv6/dv7t 6000+ will use some of the features newer PowerXpress, since that was the original plan for the series.
The manual switch isn't dependable nowadays for the average user. It is so easy to trigger odd glitches. More and more random applications even Microsoft Office (they been lately hiring graphic programmers for it) are defaulting to render using the 3d card.
For example if you enable flash with 3d acceleration on, switch mode, what you see?. A green screen or random gibberish.
Of course, my example doesn't really apply to in-house graphic switching such as AMD to AMD since they pretty much use recognizable op codes. -
-
Yeah, but remember that our defaults in CCC that it would switch automatically if we unplug right. The user is most likely will hit the change button and totally disregard the warning. or get no warning at all.
How would he know that his app is rendering by the graphic card? If it switch will it look the same or it would simply gibberish?
And there are people who just switch cause they feel like it. Same problem as before. -
I cannot produce this gibberish problem you are referring to. It seems that I can't switch mode unless all the applications (including internet explorer) are first closed.
-
AMD has a some limited detection that prevents the switch which only updates per CCC update.
It also a nuisance to find an app that prevent that switch. Heck I had a problem with it before, which turns out to be an simple visualization (the one changes color and shapes according to the beats of the music) addon I used for Media Center.
-----
Try this disable 3d acceleration in IE9, enable 3d acceleration in flash. Then Switch by force. -
I do like the fact that they have improved the switching process overall, but I do wish that they had simply retained an option to switch manually when needed. -
-
-
As for the wireless card, the default option is "Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN with Wireless Display Support." The difference is that the default is not dual-band, and runs only on 2.4GHz, and not able to use a 5.0GHz signal. -
If you just getting yours now with a 61xx product, I'm pretty sure they are preinstalled with 11.4 with an old CCC with the dynamic switching. So it pretty much be defaulting to the 3000 and switches if detect the app needs it or by user intervention via select by context menu.
There should be an option to create a application profile somewhere in your CCC to allow you to default the card. I seriously doubt they be missing that or it would look really bad against the current generation of Nvidia's Optimus. But I do love AMD BACON.

Apparently HP shipped me a low capacity battery with my laptop, because I got a Battery Alert stating that:
"HP Battery Alert
The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low.
For optimal performance, this battery may need to be replaced.
Primary (internal) Battery (601)
ENTER - Continue Startup
For more information, please visit: www.hp.com\go\techcenter\startup"
I'm chatting with a CSR atm, HP better send me a good battery. I've only had my laptop for 2 days.
Also, I ran the Battery Test in the BIOS, and my battery failed, saying "Primary - Replace (31). -
So the issue solved would be primarily that the end-user isn't happy with their wireless speed and bandwidth?
Also thanks for the answer to the graphics question! -
Pretty much also the 6230 has bluetooth 3.0 embedded on the chip. So it pretty much dual band capability + bluetooth on 1 card. Unfortunately you have to install 2 drivers separately, one for the wifi and other for bluetooth.
HP batteries deteriorates real quickly. I really don't know how they do it pretty consistently, they get over 75% wear after 1 year.
While my other OEM batteries reach that in 2-3 years. I guess bad luck.

Most laptop batteries in my experience last about a year before a major performance decrease. -
I talked to an HP Tech Support person, and he said that HP will ship me another battery within 3-4 days, and that I do not have to return my current battery. I hope this new one will have a high capacity to start with.

For those of you having video issues, have you tried installing the 11.5b hotfix yet? When I installed them, they fixed quite a few issues for me.

Can anyone explain how to update ati and intel driver on this laptop? Hp side have 2 outdated ati drivers and intel which can't be installed due different HW (? why it is there then?)
-
If you refer to this link from Intel:
Graphics — Customized computer manufacturer graphics driver is detected
It explains how to install the reference drivers from Intel on a system using switchable graphics. Keep in mind you may experience performance and/or other issues when using these drivers as they are not designed for switchable graphics systems.
Installing reference ATI drivers SHOULD follow suit if ATI didnt screw around with their INF file to prevent non-installer installations. Now, in my experience I was able to install the 11.5b hotfix drivers without having to do that, simply ran the installer and they worked. Here is the link just in case it is possible:
AMD Catalyst? 11.5b hotfix
If that does NOT work, you simply need the zipped driver package and you'll need to follow the same steps for the ATI drivers that you did for the Intel drivers above.
Fortunately you can use the same 11.5b driver package I've already linked. If it does NOT install, it will still have unzipped its installer files to a location (either you left it default or set it somewhere else, I'd recommend someplace you can find it easily). Inside that folder it will have a tree structure in the order of:
X:\yourinstalllocation\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF
(W76A_INF is the 64 bit driver, W7_INF is the 32 bit driver. Assuming you have not modified the install of Win7 on your system, you want the 64 bit driver)
You'll want to point the device manager driver installation at the INF file in that folder.
If this does not work, let me know. It simply means we need a properly zipped set of drivers with a correctly written INF file from ATI, I'm sure they exist somewhere but I didnt find them off hand, I'll look around a few mins.
Note: This will NOT update CCC, it will simply update the display driver.
Note 2: Even if the 11.5b installer functions properly, the base installer (of other versions) from ATI may not work as it will detect the switchable graphics for what they are. It seems the 11.5b installer has a slimmed version for broader compatibility.
EDIT:
If you want a smaller download link that is ONLY the display driver (however does not include the 11.5b hotfix) you can follow this link, download the display driver only, and follow the procedures outlined above:
http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx#2
Disclaimer:
I take no responsibility if the system experiences issues after following this install procedure. I'm not HP and I didnt come up with the lame switchable graphics driver garbage. -
-
Thx, but it looks REEEEALY complicatedWish HP and AMD will make possible to install drivers directly from intel.com and amd.com
-
Do things look smaller with the 1080p screen? I have the Dv7t and when I logged into Skype the text is smaller than my 15.6 in Dell laptop. Also if anyone could tell me how can I confirm that I have the 640gb at 7400 rpm hard drive without taking this laptop apart that would be great. Thanks in advance
-
That aside, as far as I'm aware, Skype can manage its own fonts. You should be able to adjust the size within the program to make it easier to read. I dont use skype regularly though so I dont know the steps to do that, but likely you can google it (I'd do it but I'm at work and the proxy blocks internet telephony sites... sigh)
To determine your hard drive do this:
Open the device manager: (Start> type devmgmt.msc, hit enter)
Locate the entry labeled Disk Drives
Expand it
Find the one for your Hard Drive (likely labeled something like Hitachi, Samsung, Western Digital, or some other major brand). Post the model number listed next to it here or google it.
If no model number is listed, right-click on it and pick properties.
Click Details tab
In the dropdown pick Hardware ID
Post the contents of that here -
After having a problem with the switchable graphics a couple nights ago, it is working like a charm now. Maybe a restart took care of a problem, or maybe I just had no idea what was going on. Regardless, all is fine now.
By the way, what would be the best cloth and cleaner to use on the screen? -
Using a mux design requires the special drivers to work and you see a delay flicker when switching.
The newer 6100 model coming out now are using a limited form of a muxless design. Which unfortunately, depends on updates with HP.
A little reading what to expect and some explanation.
AMD’s Nvidia Optimus Killer Technology Gets Detailed

Nvidia's Optimus is a muxless design, so you can separably install or update Intel drivers or the Nvidia drivers.

Here are the new switchable graphics controls for those with the older model or who didn't get their laptop yet.
The Switchable Graphics dialog shows apps that you have run and allows you to click the button to the right and it will change to High Performance or Power Saving. If you run a new app it will show up in yellow as Not Assigned and you can select which GPU it will use. That would be great if it worked for all apps, but it doesn't. I couldn't get Furmark to use the Radeon graphics no matter what I tried. There is no context menu where you could right-click an icon and say, Run with this GPU.
The PowerPlay(tm)settings allow general power profile settings based on being plugged in or not. I'm not quite sure what the algorithm is on which GPU it selects if an app is set for High Performance but you're on battery with the Maximize Battery Life setting.
When PowerPlay is unchecked the fans do run a lot more. I have mine set with Enable PowerPlay checked and Maximize Battery Life for both Plugged In and Battery and that provides a very long battery life. It's frustrating that you can't manually switch and that needs to be fixed or provide better driversAttached Files:

For a cloth, a clean tee-shirt rag works just fine and dandy. No need for some silly purchased "specialty" cloth. -
-
I knew they would have it, they are not that dumb not to learn from Nvidia's past mistakes
I might have an idea why it fails for a certain app. A little quirk even with Nvidia's.
You might have that particular executable in high performance, but what if that executable calls a child executable, i doubt the child gets the same preference as the parent. Try marking all the executable binaries of your benchmark for high performance.
The prompt doesn't work on subroutines binary executable calls.

I noticed you are missing a few standard tabs and gained an optional in your CCC, no wonder Dave went ape nuts. No harm intended. -
Guys, help!
I just got my DV&tqe this tuesday. I ordered mine before they began to offer the FullHD screen, I have the (i guess it's called HD+) 1600 x 900 display. A lot of people on this forum said that display was poor, but most of you had experience with other good screens. I, however, have used a 1280 x 800 display for the last year and i simply assumed that this new 1600 x 900, no matter how crappy it was would blow me out of the water. I was wrong. I have tried calibrating this thing every which way and the colors are still washed out. I love the brightness, but everything is constantly washed out.
My problem, if I return this then I have to reorder, but there is currently no 30% coupon. Which means if I reorder I would have to pay at least 1350, which is damn near 400 more then what I paid for this thing. Second, if I return this then Im going to loose my manual switchable graphics capabilities, I dont want the new way. The main reason I bought this was because I could determine when to switch graphics, not some ty optimus system, now AMD has gone the same route as optimus. Third, my friend has a Dell XPS 17 with fullhd and everything is so tiny on it. I actually wanted the 1600x900 because the text and image size is perfect.
So, I know you can inrease text size and graphic size, this sounds like changing the DPI. Doesn't changing the DPI reduce quality. So if I get a 1080p display and bump up the DPI settings to 125 or 150%, that's going to make my display quality so much worse, or am I incorrect in assuming that.
I just dont know what to do, Im so upset by this ordeal. Is the Full HD that much better then the HD+? Also, is there somehow another way I could calibrate the monitor to make it look better, Ive been using the Graphics Properties > Color Enhancement to calibrate this display.
Also, are they able to simply exchange, I'm willing to pay only the difference of the screen, Im not willing to return and reorder and pay full price.
What do you guys think? Any of you with experience with HD+ display. I just can't believe that my 5 year old lappy has better colors then this thing.
I'm so frustrated. -
Changing the DPI doesn't reduce the picture quality, it just increase the size of the fonts to any Windows DPI aware apps.
The FHD are user's opinion, most recommend it.
Most cause you get better odd of getting a higher quality screen than what you could do with it. -
-
Like Falco stated, increasing DPI has no affect on picture quality. The extra pixels of the HD screen makes for a very crisp image--plus it has a FAR greater vertical viewing angle. that alone is a godsend.
-
Try updating only the CCC, it may have the application update.
You need to get past I think 2011.0525. If I remember yours was a 2011.04xx?
