The lifespan will decrease if you charge it when the batteries are warm; for that matter, make sure they are in a dry, cool place. The optimum charge level for the battery lifespan is around 40%, so letting it charged all the time (staying at 100%) is not the best thing for it. These are general rules that are commonly stated, though, the batteries will eventually die.

Good luck with the manual graphic switch. I have the 6000 revision just 2 weeks old and I have the option of setting either the Intel or ATI GPU as the default just by clicking one button or the other in the Switchable Graphics window of the CCC. The newer 6100 revision, such as you have, allows you to set the graphics card by application only in the same window. There apparently is no way to assign one card or the other universally in your version. I have a friend with a 6100 version who is trying to assign one over the other for all applications and, after 3 hours with HP tech support, was told that I had to upload my Video driver folder from my dv7 so she could use it to downgrade her CCC to the simpler configuration. She has yet to download it so we are hoping it works.

Has anyone been able to get 4-channel external speakers working? I just got my dv7t-6100 today and I can only get Windows to recognize my speakers as stereo. It appeared to have been working at one point, as I was occupying both headphone jacks. Then, for no apparent reason, it went back to the laptop speakers all of a sudden. To fix this I had to disable the Communications Headphones, but now I only get stereo.

EDIT: 10 minutes after making this post, I am now getting crackling sounds from all external headphones and speakers.

EDIT 2: The crackling was gone for a bit and then came back, and now it appears to be completely at random. This is my second dv7tqe with sporadic, nonsensical sound issues. All drivers are up to date. Any ideas?

I think I just hosed my machine. I installed 11.5b and now I can't switch graphics while there are any applications are running. Everything has to be shut down. This is frustrating because it was working well after the minimized recovery. I might have to just reinstall those graphics drivers and CCC.

Additionally, I think that there needs to be more work to the BIOS. My card reader just stopped working mid session and had to sleep and resume to get it to be recognized again.

While, I'm not impressed with the laptop speakers, I went to Best Buy and bought some 2.1s and these things sound awesome.
Does anyone know if it's possible to only output video through HDMI and output the audio from my laptop to these speakers?

If you want it globally, they made that really easy since vista, just set the default output in sound devices.

Wait, so what do you mean by the optimum level of the battery??
I use the laptop plugged in when its low on charge... as it reaches 100% I plug it out and use it until the battery runs out.. and then plug it while still using it...
Is that a good practice for its lifespan??? :(

Kind of sucks on the TV we have in the living room. None of the preset resolutions fit it correctly. >_> Anyway to manually play with them?

When I got mine, I did a fresh install of Windows 7 and just installed the drivers in SWSetup. Plus a few others off of the HP website that weren't in the folder. My computer is running fine. Games work. It's all good.

would like to know how the people who are saying that they used their 6770 ati card know they did , for me is just assumption. there is no way to be sure and i will return mind if hp to not provide a better way for people to make sure their card is really working when they need it to.

I think people are worrying waaaaayyyy to much over the graphics switching issue.

This is a problem for a new graphics card with a new driver that will be ironed out in time.

Is dv6-6100's ATI 6770m hardware different from what is installed in the DV6-6000, or the driver installed is the only difference in the two models?

I haven't had any issues with the switchable graphics so far on the 6100. I'm still running on the stock drivers.

I've only tried two games so far. I can play Crysis on high and the Witcher 2 on medium/high, both at 1920x1080 without any slowdown. Both play very smoothly and look stunning. (Note: I'm not monitoring the FPS). This alone pretty much confirms that the 6770m is kicking in even if I can't verify it for sure.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the computer. I'm somewhat disappointed with build quality, but for the price I can't complain too much. The screen is absolutely gorgeous by the way.

When I load up Crysis 2, my laptop starts to vibrate, from what I assume, is the fan on the Graphics card (bottom left corner). This was proved to me when I tried to play Minecraft through Firefox, and was getting 4 FPS and lagging like hell. That was due to the integrated graphics. The ATI card started going and I jumped to 104 FPS before it shut back off and I started lagging again. The intel graphics aren't really that good, so if you're doing anything like playing a game or watching a movie, more than likely your ATI card is running.

Weird. I can't get the Crysis (1st one) demo to play smoothly at 1920x1080 at full high. The menu even gets jittery. I know that the 6770M is kicking in as the heat turns up and GPU-z logging shows nearly 100% utilization of the card.

I think, however, I remember getting it to work at 1920x1080 before...the movies were still jittery though. I've actually just been tooling around in it at 1366x768 windowed mode (so as to play at native resolution). Interestingly enough it really makes me appreciate how much more resolution I have than the stock "HD" screen that the dv6 comes with. $100 well spent.

As for monitoring if your dGPU is working, GPU-z will do this quickly and easily. You can even set it to log in the background while you play different games or whatnot to tax the system. As far as trying to tax the CPU, I've only got the turbo boost to shoot up to 2795GHz for a brief second or two even with only 1 thread on prime95. I think its incredible that I can run prime 95 on 8 threads and still have a completely normal web browsing and document creation experience. The breadth of processing power on this beast is phenomenal.

If you don't need the battery at all, you can use the laptop until there's 40% or so left. Then take the battery out and store it in a dry, cool place.

First of all: relax :) . Your batteries are going to die some time in the distant future no matter what you do, so don't stress out so much. By "optimum level" I mean to say the battery charge level most likely to extend your batteries lifespan (compared to other charge levels like 5% or 100%). Whenever reasonable, try to maintain the battery's charge level around 40% (meaning that you should charge up to 60-80% and let it go down to 20%) :( . For most people, including me, this habit is annoying and impractical; the hassle might not even be worth the increase in battery lifespan. Not charging when the computer/battery is hot, however, is simple and worth it. When you are not using the PC, put the battery (locked onto the PC or by itself) in a dry, cool place. Again, relax and enjoy your PC.

Hi guys I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on this laptop, the only thing that concerns me is whether or not the extra $150 to upgrade the screen is worth it.
Its not the resolution that I want, but rather it says the upgraded screen is anti-glare, does that mean the standard screen has glare? I really hate that on laptops.

The screen is the most important upgrade you can do on these laptops next to the $25 for the 1gb 6770 graphics card.

The standard screen has washed out colors and the viewing angle is atrocious. The anti-glare means the screen is NOT glossy, which the standard screen is.

Windows won't boot from an external USB without some hackery. You likely had a 0x0000007B stop error, inaccessible boot device. You can boot Windows PE from USB stick and HDD just fine.

Other OS's, Linux for example, would boot without any issues.

Definitely get the screen upgrade. Makes a bigger difference than any other upgrade. And yes, the standard screen is glossy/reflective/shiny (hence the term "BrightView") and the upgraded screen is matte.

Also note that there are coupons which more than make up for the cost of the screen upgrade.

Hey everyone, got my dv6t-6100 a few days couple days ago. I just ran 3dmark vantage 2011 and I am kind of worried about the temps. I have the 9cell battery so it is propped up and have it on my desk with nothing blocking the vents. The max temps after 1 run are as follows:
    ambient: 49.8C
    HD0: 38C
    Temp1(assuming the 6770M): 87C
    Core 0-3: 85-87C

Is this anything to worry about?

Anyone else having trouble setting resolution in games? It seems like the only choices I get are 1366x768 and 1920x1080, nothing in between.

(Well, I can choose lower than 1366x768, but that's not important).

Has anyone done a review with one of the new 1080p screens to judge the quality of it? Saw a couple of unboxing vids, but those are the least useful for people. Thoughts on the machine and how it handles are much more useful (screen quality, viewing angles, color, sound quality etc).

    -Thanks in advance

    Edit:
for some reason it works not (youCam) but it doesn't allow me to capture in HD. any advice on other programs that would allow me to test this? Thanks

In my experience with laptops over the last 11 years you will start to notice a major decrease in battery performance around/after a year.

I am having a terrible time to open the back of the dv6tqe. Do you guys use any tool? a screwdriver perhaps? I tried with a very small screwdriver but I am really afraid to break the clips (plastic, I suppose). The clearance is real tight on mine.

Really appreciate any good tip here. The manual says slide the cover and then pry it open but real life was not like that.

How do you get the laptop to play Blu-Rays?! When I loaded the blu-ray in the optical drive it started playing on Cyberlink PowerDVD 10 but I can barely hear any audio even with the volume at the highest level. Then I tried windows media but it said that the blu-ray was not compatible. It said that I need to update a code or something. I could upgrade the Cyberlink PowerDVD media but it cost $59.99. I'm not sure what to do here. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Push the button to the left to release the battery. Take out the battery.

Then slide the button right to pop up the panel. The battery has to be out in order to do that.

    1. You do not need to pay for Cyberlink. It works fine with the version that comes on the laptop.

    2. make sure you don't have the audio turned down in either the app, or in the "mixer" portion of the volume control(found in system tray). (do other apps play loudly?)

    3. use the on-screen "remote" that comes up in cyberlink, if you can't click "play" with the mouse.
