Hi all! I want to buy HP dv6 quad, i will be using it at home and at university. Are they heavy? Would you advice this laptop for a student who's going to carry it? And what about battery life?

same question here
-
Its about 3kg, so that may or may not be a PITA to carry around all day, depends on you on that one. For me no drama, it doesnt bother me at all. But yea I use a backpack.
As for battery life, it depends on the model your using. I am using the original DV6-60xx series so I can manually switch, so on the Intel IGP I get around 4-5hrs(on power saving mode, light tasks, no gaming), when Im on the Radeon (full power etc) maybe 2hrs I guess. -
how is it compared to the dell xps 15, because my brother has that and it looks pretty bulky
-
They are very similar in size and weight. The dv6t is seems to be roughly 5% slimmer in all aspects.
XPS 15
Dimensions
15" x 10.4" x 1.3" - 1.5"
Weight
5.96 lbs.
DV6T
Dimensions 14.88" (W) x 9.71" (D) x 1.23" (min H)/1.39" (max H)
Weight 5.78 lbs -
TBH if u dont mind the 1366x768 screen, I'd be hunting for the manual switching version of the DV6 ie. the DV6-60xx series like what I have. Far less hassle, and the build date on mine is march 2011, so its not like your being out dated tech, and no doubt it will be cheaper now than the newer 'problematic' 61xx series.

dv6t 5.78lbs this is with battery?
lokiswarrior
all DV60xx have manual switchable graphics? -
well, it does hog power just like avg, antivir or most other common antiviruses.
I know that because I was looking for a the lightest possible antivirus for a "dinosaur" pc (celeron 1200).
The only one that was reasonably light was NOD32.
Besides, yes lolnorton
the switchable thing is from the build or the actual drivers used ? -
which retailers and online shops are selling the dv6 with a 6770m?
doesn't matter if it's dynamic switching or not, but manual switching is preferred.
lammah, the switching is mostly a hardware issue, but drivers do play a part. the cards are wired differently in the dynamic systems. -
Here ya go: AcpiTbls.rw
How do you check the BIOS SLIC? -
Its the build....I dont know anyone on here with a series 60xx(ie. 6023/24/27 etc) that has Dynamic switching, it seems to be only the 61xx revision of this laptop that has dropped manual switching, however you gain a 1920x1080 screen, so it depends on your needs really and how patient you are with the Dynamic switching if a FHD screen is important to u.
Im running a DV6-6027TX(see sig) with the current 11.6 cats -
It's definitely hardware since 6000 has a mux between IGP and 6770 where 6100 doesn't.
-
what bloatwares did you uninstall, i am receiving the laptop in a few days but i don't want to do a clean install because i never did it before and i am afraid to mess something up on my new dv6t -
I dont have any scales handy so.......
As for manual switchable graphics on series 60xx I believe so yes. I have 2 a DV6-6024TX and the DV6-6027TX both have manual switching. I believe its 61xx series only that have Dynamic switching, and yes as far as I am aware its a hardware implemented system. -

What is the difference among all these numbers in DV6 numeration? I want to buy HP Pavilion dv6-6001sg What does 001sg mean?
lokiswarrior,
thanks for your help
-
I believe(someone correct me if I'm wrong) that there are different model numbers depending on where it is released in the world. Most importantly though it says its a DV6-60xx series, which is the manual switching version of this laptop.
SG, no idea. Could mean Switchable Graphics.....but I'm just guessing really. Any german or european sites you can goto to confirm what I've said or maybe send the company an email to confirm? -
I think the letters at the end indicates the country it's being sold in or a special edition (ie dv6-6013cl is sold in Costco). So SG would probably be Singapore, US would be the United States, etc. Just a guess though.

I have made some research and haven't found any information about numeration of this laptop. Maybe i will try to contact HP support.
-
can someone post some pictures of the dv6tqe i just want to see how thin and portable it is?
-
Has anyone done a clean install of Win7 on their dv6tqe yet? I've been trying to do that for a few hours now, and I keep hitting the error "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now" right after the language selection screen. I'm trying to boot from a flash drive, which I have done many times, and the ISO image is not corrupt, as it is the same one I have used multiple times with my old laptop. Any ideas?
-
Well I sold mine. The screen quality of the 13x7 screen is just too poor. Fair thee well thread of HP magic.
-
Heh, yeah, I had that problem, too. Make sure the drive is plugged into the right USB 2.0 ports. The 3.0 ports on the left of the laptop need drivers, so it will boot, but then can't access something on the drive later when drivers are required. *shrug* Seems to be the issue.
USB 2 ports on the right are all set. Confused the heck out of me for about a half hour... I had a Yumi multiboot thumbdrive and most of my Linux based OSes wouldn't run on the 3.0 USB ports. I also had the same issue with a thumbdrive for my Win7 Ultimate installer...

You can still order one with the beautiful 1080p screen. -
Curious for users who have done the minimized image recovery. It reinstalls the OS, hardware drivers and some HP software, anyone know if the Beats Audio is installed as well or if it is re-acquirable somewhere else online or in the original SW folder?

Yes, Beats Audio is installed. -
Thanks Qlippoth! The funny thing is, despite all the unboxing videos I watched before I bought the laptop, I forgot which two ports were 3.0 and which were 2.0. While I was troubleshooting, I ended up Googling which ports were which but didn't think to try the others out. Thanks again!
-
THanks a lot @coastal
my new 1080p screen+ blu-ray return should be coming in next week, so i cant wait for setup! -
I honestly don't know, maybe on the bios page?
Edit: Which bios do you have? F.14? -
Talks about extracting the BIOS SLIC
SLIC Table (SLIC.BIN or ACPISLIC.BIN) BIOS File for OEMs Download My Digital Life -
Here's an F.14 dump if his wasn't. The SLIC table is in the ACPI dump, it shows as version 2.1.
EDIT: Added SLIC table binary dump if that's what is needed. -
how did you the minimized recovery?
-
thanks guys, I placed the post on their forums. Hopefully they can open this up to remove the whitelist for WLAN cards.
Edit: thanks, placed the slic table file as well. Here is the link of the post, though it may be a while before we have an answer since the guy who does it has been away for over 10 days.

Yeah, just updated bios to F.14 before doing the RW-Everything report.
Just saw dgobe's post. Thanks for providing the SLIC tables! -
guys.... what is the safest form of recovery media?
flash drives, sd cards or dvds? -
I used a flash drive. You COULD accidentally write over it, but I keep mine labelled. DVD-RW are archive quality, they'll keep your data for years. DVD-R or +r only last a few years, if that.
You could make DVDs, then rip the ISOs to a hard drive, that's even better. I just have a copy of the SWSETUP folder and a flash drive.

Ok, I have my Windows 7 Pro on the second hard drive, I installed the basic drivers, and updated to the latest ATi Driver, but now my Duke Nukem Forever runs like crap. Note that it runs fine with the Factory default ATi drivers on my Minimal Install Factory drive...
I uninstalled the ATi driver and reinstalled the factory default again, but still runs crappy. I'd prefer to use my Win 7 Pro installation and not have to boot to the factory drive to play Duke... Not sure it affected other games, as I just noticed it.
- Qlippoth -
How do you make ISO images of the system? using some software or something?
And if you preserve the flash drive and not use it accidently, is there a chance of data loss over time? -
The backup ISOs can be made with the HP backup software that comes with the laptop. This simply makes a backup of the repair media needed to restore the lptop to the factory defaults (as well as a minimal install with less junk).
You can also use the Windows backup methods for creaing disks, but that will simply be a backup of the system as it is now. I don't think that is nearly as useful, but better than nothing. the more stuff you installed, the more disks you might need to back it up, asit is all your data on the hard drive.
Sorry if I wasn't clear. Flash drive (I used a 16GB flash drive) should be good for a long time. I'm not sure what, if anything, will cause data loss. I haven't read about any issues with long term sotrage on a flash drive, so I can't really speak with any authority on the matter.
Anyone else know more about flash drives and their longevity if they aren't written to, but just used to store data?
You would simply burn the DVDs via the HP restore disk method, then use a program to rip them to ISO files. These ISO files could be stored on a backup drive (or more than one copy on multiple drives). These ISO files can then be burned to DVDs as often as required. I should mention, when I said DVD-R or DVD+R last only so long, I've seen studies that say they can last as few as 8 months.
DVD-RW are archive quality, and the technology they use for the storage medium is different than DVD-R, etc. So I think they last something like 5+ years. If you plan on being ready to repair the OS on the machine for a long time I recommend the DVD to ISO method.
I'm not sure where to get an ISO ripper, though I would guess there are probably a few good free ones out there?
Anyone else know a good ISO ripper for simple data disks?

last call..... dvdrw or 16 gb flash drive?
(if usb, please recommend a usb 3.0 16gig flash drive)
Thanks -
Hey guys, I just did a clean install of Windows 7 and have a few quick concerns. I hear a lot about backing up SWSetup--I did back it up, but is there any advantage of doing that over just going to HP's website and downloading drivers from there?
Also, could someone explain how I'm supposed to install drivers from SWSetup (er, this sounds really bad...). I've looked through a lot of the directories in just the "Drivers" folder, and there seem to be a ton of .exe's. Should I be running all of those? Sorry for the probably noob-ish question. Thanks! -
I have the 32GB version of this one...stellar!!! Can't say enough good things about this A-Data drive...
Newegg.com - ADATA Superior Series 16GB S102 USB 3.0 Flash Drive (Titanium Gray) Model AS102-16G-RGY
My 32 GB one reads at 70mb/s and writes at 40mb/s -
As far as I know you cant use a USB 3.0 flash drive in the USB 3.0 ports for a fresh install.....reason being that the Renesas driver isnt slip-streamed into the install, and therefore it cant read from those ports until it installs them later on in the reinstall process. I accidentally stuck my usb 2.0 drive in one when trying to install on my SSD and get an error about no drivers etc.
Stick it in the USB 2.0 port if your gonna use it for a install.
A guy a few pages back noted this as well. -
alright... thanks man.... I think I will go with the usb flash drive
-
I'm using a Lexar Echo ZE, tiny darned thing. But I can keep it in the mesh pocket of my iPhone headphones in case of emergency.
Somehow I lost my Factory drive over the weekend (just the OS partition), but had a secondary (Win7 Pro) drive in the second caddy just in case. I did lose some game saves, but I can play to catch back up.
Amazon.com: Lexar Echo ZE 16GB USB 2.0 Backup Drive LEHZE16GASBNA: Electronics
USB 2.0 only, bit pricey, but I can carry my 16GB backup and 32GB drives in the space of ONE normal sized stick (three if I had another)... Love the damn things.

I guess I'll answer my own question. The reason I was getting lame performance from the ATi, is it was NOT being used. I think it was using the Intel.
I set it to Power saving, then back to performance, no go. Then I reboot, still awful. Then I set it from Perf to Saving, then back, and now it is fine. So I guess it is possible for the switch software to get confused... Or maybe something to do with having to OS drives, and alternating between the two. I don't know for sure, but now everything is fine, no driver changes.
The factory OS drive never had an issue.

Hey guys for the exact same price would you get the dv6t or the dv7t? I'm exchanging my defective dv6t and can't decide between the dv6 and the dv7. Any help (pros and cons) would be much appreciated. Is the 1600 x 900 screen of the dv7t better than the 1366 x 768 of the dv6t? Dpi? I need help
-
Personally, I would get the dv7. It is still very portable if you ask me. However, the dv6 will take up less space. For instance, the dv7 would not work for a student who wanted to use it in a big lecture hall. The 1600x900 screen is not that great, but apparently not as awful as the much-hated 720p screen on the dv6. If you have the extra money, the 1080p upgrade would definitely be worth it for the dv7.

whats wrong with your dv6?
the silver plastic rim around my laptop seems to be warping where the speaker gill is in front by my right palm rest...
im thinking about exchanging mine as well. anyone else have this problem?
