Hey smart guy, without needing to take the laptop apart... HWiNFO64 shows that the motherboard in the two dv6tqe that I have in my possession have the B3 version of the "Sandy Bridge" compatible chipset. How about that for being clueless? :p

I reinstalled Windows as I said I was going to, but am having trouble getting the switchable graphics to work. This is the manually-switching 6000 model. I'm currently stuck on the Intel HD Graphics. Catalyst Control Center says my active gpu isn't supported by Catalyst. I have both the Intel HD Graphics and the 6770M's drivers installed with Catalyst 11.8.

Edit: nevermind, fixed by uninstalling drivers and then letting Windows Update fetch them. Now I'll do the "manual" Catalyst install and hope it stays working.

You can use the Mobility 11.8 driver, but using the 11.8 Catalyst Control Center is the problem, stick with the HP CCC.

Not to propel an argument, but many of the Dv6 and 7s, even if they have revision B3, show B2 in software. So, if the software reports B3, you are good, but if it reports B2, it is still unknown.

sorry if this has already been answered. the only reason I can think of that max 8GB is supported reflects the availability of 4GB memory sticks for shipment to Canada. Why on earth that is true I have no idea, but I can't imagine that Canadian models magically don't support the same max memory as the U.S models.

Anyway, since there are only 2 available slots on the motherboard, the most you could (before recently) put in there is 8GB. HP appears to be transitioning to the 8GB sticks -- meaning you can put two of those in there for a max of 16GB. I say "appears" because right now you can get a fine deal on an 8GB configuration (2x4GB), and if thats all you'll ever need its a great deal. That in the US of course.

the 16GB configurations are expensive and overkill for me at least. The prices will probably come down, along with the rest of the world economy :) but if you need something right now, you can't beat the 2x4GB price

Hey TheAtreidesHawk sounds like you're already changing to the Envy. I just sent my Dv7 back and ordered another one! here's what I learned

wireless: The centrino 1000 card isn't the best but its good enough for me. I don't do a lot of heavy/large highspeed downloads via wireless, but if you want to do that, the Envy's wireless card will do it better.

color: I'm switching from dark umber to the silver. the dark shows off fingerprints too well! You'll like the Envy's silver color for that reason.

disk drives -- with the 30% coupon right now, consider making HP supply the SSD. At the last minute, and because of the 30% coupon I decided to do that, and switched to the HP supplied SSD for my re-ordered DV7. In the DV7 that upgrade cost me less than $200 more compared to the 2x7200 HDD configuration I had previously. yea the Intel SSDs aren't the fastest on the block, nor the largest, but for that price I couldn't resist, and the 160GB will be good enough for the next 2 years and it will be fully covered by the HP warranty.

right now the SSD market is moving so fast its hard to know where to aim. and in 2 years things will probably be very different. I see startups and big companies alike all trying to take a piece of the SSD market, and in two years I think Intel and Kingston will still be around; not so sure about some of the others

But all that aside if you need the fastest now, then by all means put a kingston SSD in that Envy!

Hey guys, Im getting some conflicting info on the card reader for the DV7t. Certain sites this one for example say it can take a bunch of different cards, but the official specs from HP say only SD and MMC. Is it able to take a Mem stick PRo duo?

Yeah I'm sorta bummed bout the wireless card thing. I really was excited bout getting the dv7 but I really don't think I would have been satisfied with going back to a single band wireless card.

My only concern is that I ordered my Envy with just 1 7200 rpm hdd so it def won't come with the 2nd caddy will it? I plan on replacing it with an ssd but the really high capacity ones are so expensive and if I get 2 of the smaller ones I'd have to get the caddy as well. Not to mention attempting the whole RAID 0 or whatever configuration I'd need to set up one big storage volume.

Yeah, so far =P (As I said, only have had it for a month or so).

Well. It seems like HP uses the BIOS to "spoof" the reported revisions to B2/04 (the affected mother board revision) for compatibility reasons, so it's not an easy check (See page 110 to 114 in this thread for more info).
But then again AFAIK (AFAIK) the 61XX-line was announced after March this year (which was when the new fixed Sandy Bridge was beginning to be used)...
My computer reports a lot of different things for example, Device Manager says Rev_04, HWiNFO64 says B2 (=Rev 04?) and CPUZ B2/09 (Which if I understand correctly isn't possible). So...

And, for all you who are thinking about a completely new install:
Press F1... F11? Well, the Function button for system recovery anyway, and then choose a "Minimal System Restore" (or something like that). Installed only what I wanted, with some webcam software being the only exception.

You can use the hwinfo64 to check the motherboard, as someone else mentioned this post mentioned. Mine shows that it is the b3.

I got my laptop last week and I have to say, it's just amazing. This thread has been really helpful.

I'm just wondering something, what do you do to clean the 'spots' left by your fingers? Just using some tissue won't do the job and I don't want to scratch the laptop.

Also, when I'm listening to music, I don't really hear the speakers below the touchpad. It's probably not supposed to be loud, but I don't feel like I'm listening to anything at all, is there a way to test them to make sure they are working?

    Thanks.

Hello all, Newbie here. I have a DV7T QE that I would like to test regarding its speed and performance. I read a while back that many of you run/ran a certain test for just that. Where do I find it, and what is it called? I have a feeling that there may be something not quite right with mine. Some basic tasks just seem to take far too long for such a supposedly powerful computer. Just want to make sure. What else can I do to find out if something not right? Thanks in advance to all who reply!

thats right -- you will need to the 2nd caddy if you plan to use both HDD slots. frankly there is every advantage to using both an SSD and a conventional HDD at the same time -- certain files belong on the rotating HDD and not on the SSD, so with both available you can really tune things up and optimize for longest SSD life. If it were me I would not run with just an SSD by itself.

When I was planning to upgrade my DV7 to an SSD after market, I ordered it with two 7200 rpm HDDs. that way the 2nd caddy/bracket is there, and HP has to test and prove that both slots work before I started swapping things around. Then the 30% coupon came around again and I realized I could get HP to supply the SSD+7200 dual drive configuration for like $175 more and that was too good to resist. So I returned my first DV7 and re-ordered with the SSD. now mine will come configured by HP exactly like I want it, and that configuration will be supported by HP for 2 years.

but for your situtation -- If you are commited to adding the SSD after market, yes you will have to purchase the caddy or bracket/cable assembly. But folks have done it. From HP it is expensive but there are after market sources as well, I believe.

Don't worry about RAID 0 -- your Envy will come with just the one drive, so RAID will not be implimented. and when you add the after market SSD you can move your 7200 HDD to slot b (the one where you have to add the caddy/bracket) and just put the SSD in slot A. Thats the configuration I would want.

that does seem odd to me as well, but memory is such a commodity that HP must be just using their stock as best they can, and they have most likely qualified/tested all combinations, so it won't matter. They don't have to be matched pairs like yesteryear.

They likely make frequent bulk purchases from whom ever happens to be the lowest bidder at any given time. The DIMMs likely end up in big bins of mixed brands on the manufacturing line the the assemblers just grab from the bin.

This works! Just go in to HP recovery manager, press system restore and then it will restart and take you to the recovery screen, where the choice "Minimal restore" will reveal itsself!

Edit: Im not sure it did work. Upon first startup I had 84 processes running, that seems alot for a minimal install..

Has anyone noticed if the new bios fix that allows for setting just the intel card has increased their battery life?

My question is compared to using the hybrid graphics switching which only puts the radeon card into sleep mode.

Ok, so the DVD player on my DV7t is acting up. It will seach an stick, and repeat he same searching chunk-chunk on an endless loop. It worked fine this morning I installed crysis yesterday and played it today. I popped out Crysis to see how a DVD would play, and now it just searches every DVD I put in there, evne the Crysis that worked fine before, in a choppy non ending rythm. WHYYYY?! The microsoft support wizard is stuck at the chucnk-chunk sound, and wont diagnose anything. Any clues?

I've seen this kind of thing happen when you first put in a disk which itself is contaminated. the disk contaminates the drive optical sensor and then from that moment on, even good disks won't play.

but thats a stretch, given your description: Odds are your crysis disk didn't contaminate the drive, and you you might have a hardware failure. you might want to reboot, put in a known good DVD that plays somewhere else, and prepare to call HP

It's been a while since I've last been on the forums. I've been happy with my DV6TSE for a while now, but just recently decided that I would attempt to give it a little more juice with some overclocking. I remember there being a guide somewhere on this forum, but it seems I'm not proficient enough in the use of the search button to find it.

Can anybody point me in the right direction of an overclocking/undervolting/anything to increase my computers performance? It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

edit:My processor is the quad core i7-720 if that helps anybody.

wow. well something must have corrupted the driver. next time you could try re-installing the driver via device manager. But now that you're up and running, consider creating restore points frequently and experiment with what changes cause the problem. If you can demonstrate that changing DVDs (say from a -R to a +R) causes problems, then you've got a scenario that you could make hp drill down to solution

I have a dv6t Select Edition with the 6770m and 1080p display ordered and shipping today! I should have it in about a week. I was looking around for out of the box setup/bloatware removal and found the forum post "HP Laptop Out-Of-The-Box Guide 2.0 for Windows 7" by v3loc1ty2.0. Is that the most recent and applicable setup instruction?

I would say yes, but really all you need to do is backup your SWSETUP folder to a USB drive or disk, make recovery disks (I think you can do this after the minimal install, not sure) and then run a minimal system image recovery.

That one will work, but it's rather old and there is an easier way to do the same thing. There's a newer one which I think is pretty good. The major change is that HP now includes a Minimal System Image option which gets rid of all of the bloatware while keeping all of the drivers. This is a far more painless way to do it than uninstalling all of the programs by hand or doing a clean Windows install and then reinstalling all of HP's driver customizations.

I've pretty much made up my mind that I'm going to purchase a DV6T. Two things I'm still not sure about, though...

    (a) how is the heat on this thing? Suppose I'm working on research for a paper with numerous Chrome tabs open along with Microsoft Word and Outlook while it's sitting on my lap.

    (b) is the i7-2630QM worth the extra money over an i5-2410M? I occasionally play games like World in Conflict, Starcraft 2, Half-Life 2, Portal 2, FEAR 3, Modern Warfare 1/2, etc., but this will not be the primary usage for this machine.

    Thank you!

I did some research and it seems to be a wash between the two on games. For example, on Starcraft 2 with each computer equipped with a 540M, the frame rate on High was 34.3 for the 2630QM and 33.9 for the 2410M. On Ultra it was 17.7 vs. 17.5. It seems that the video card is the most important.

It depends on the game, too. Some games, like GTA IV, see a much bigger boost from a quad core processor. Battlefield 3 will be a similar situation when it is released.

sure looks like it. 1080p display, 2GB 6770, black or silver case, model number 61xxx, i7 2630, 8GB RAM, all the earmarks of the latest DV6quad, and all of those specs are available in the U.S. for customized build. Interesting that this one comes with the 2GB 6770 card, which is generally considered unnecessary but still available in the U.S. only via custom config.

Yeah, the model that retailers have for mostly the same configuration as the one he has is the dv6-6190us. That one also has the 2gb 6770. So yes that should be the same as the dv6tqe.

I am thinking of ordering a DV7T. Is the 1080p screen good quality?

I am mainly interested in this computer because you can install two HDD. I will actually be installing a SSD and a HDD.

Also, hows the overall constructions and temps for this machine? Most of the info I found is for the DV6T.

    Thanks

Yes. The dv7t screen is even better than that of the dv6t since it has higher color gamut. Both screens are very good though.
