As an advice, don't buy an i5 except when the on die GPU is utilized, otherwise you are wasting your money.
Both are very fast and more than enough for any use. i7 is better for multitasking programs, i5 is better for single thread applications not significantly though.
unless the on die GPU is utilized, the battery improvement of the i5 is not significant.
i5 settles at a lower temperature than i7. Not quite sure whether the difference is significant or not.

can u help reply my query
planing to buy a dv6t, have 2 processors in mind- i5 520 and i7 720 which is better in following
1- speed, multitasking
2- battery consumption
3- over all
I am not looking into gaming, the laptop will be used for basic utilities and hsould have longevity. i7 720 is 1.6 GHz while i5 is 2.4 Ghz so isnt i5 faster? -
You will not feel a difference between both unless you stress them, even at that point, the difference is not huge.
For your case, i recommend you invest your money on other parts that will boost performance:
SSD (improve booting time), Discrete GPU+ switchable on die IGP (improve battery+games)
So a low cost i series with a discrete GPU + switchable IGP, and an SSD will perform best.
I am not aware of many laptops offering the switchable GPU, that is why i told you to wait. -
hey does anyone else hearing system noises not beeping but some static or some noises similar to beeping when your headphones are plugged in but no audio or video is playing?
-
As far as build quality, im pretty pleased so far. There are things that could so see some improvement such as the things you've mentioned plus a couple things ive noticed:
1. playing a game with a cd in the tray.. the cd tray is cheap and plasticky and vibrates up against the case and makes noise... if you touch it or move it a little side to side the vibes stop.
2. the mute button flickers.. i dont know why but sometimes randomly the mute button will randomly flicker on and off.
But all in all i think this is ONE of if not THE most stylish laptop iv ever seen. It just looks so sexy haha. I mean i coulda done without the bubbles but.. hey i guess they had to appeal to both demographics.
I also love how much power (i7, 6gb ddr3, 640gb hdd, etc) into a fairly lightweight and thin package.
If only this thing had the case of the envy! -
FYI...Sad they don't offer higher resolution screen. I wonder why they don't offer i5-540M or i7-620M. The G62T does..

If you look at the CPU models and the sale-expectations.. i think HP is expecting to sell more G62t's than DV6t's.
Funny to see how much it costs HP to foresee 1000 laptops with those CPU's btw:
cost of your i7 520M config line: x1000 = $ 225.000,-
540M x1000 = $ 257.000,-
620M x1000 =$ 300.000,-
So to answer your question..
Is HP willing to spend a whopping $ 75.000,- more each time they put in an purchase order @ Intel? Nopes.
It also depens on the hardware that goes with the G's.
I dont know a lot about the series.. im guessing its marketed towards gamers, while ours is an entertainment monster.

I would love to get the dv6t Quad in white but they don't offer it. :-(
I hste the Exprsso Black color. -
This way you'll just expand the lifespan by not using the DVD drive while gaming + you use less power.
njlx016, where do you live? try eBay? -
btw.. how to turn off the light in the HP logo??? -
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=436735&highlight=LED+disable -
That light is a small tiny light diode (And I mean VERY VERY tiny) that is lighting up a plastic. Just pull its connector plug to disable it.
I am almost pretty sure the battery drain from the light is extremely minimal to almost negligible. -
Hello guys! 1st post on the forum, new comer!
1st of all, I'd like to thank you all for providing all the helpful info here, I must've read every post (all 80-something pages of it!) at least THREE times from the time I first laid my eyes on dv6t quad to yesterday when I received them!
So I placed the order around the 15th and got it by the door step on the 26th, as you can see, I've only had it for one day.
Got the 6GB RAM and 500GB HDD, no blueray and paid $1200 after $200 instant rebate, really envious of those of you who got the $450 rebate (makes me want to strangle a kitten! gently though, with restraint...).
From my limited usage of it, I like this machine. The build quality seems pretty good, everything is pretty solid and sturdy. The only complain I have is the horizontal line run across the sides of keyboard, the silver bezel from where the cd/dvd drive is placed, it's a eye sour as it interrupts the cleaniness of the whole layout (well, and them there's fingerprints on my black espresso, but I don't really mind).
I did notice the screen resolution is not superb, even compared to my 5 year old Sony Vaio (though the Sony screen has deteriated greatly over the years, it now eludes a yellowish aura, lol. but I do remember when I first bought it and looked at the screen, "omg this is sooo clear and pretty", didn't have the same feeling for the HP upon first glance). But everyone's already got tired of hearing people talking about the low screen resolution, I think, when I tried to search for other laptops in the same config/price range, most other 15.6 inch quads (don't remember the others since I've decided on the dv6t quad!) all shares our resolution, so I will take it for its face value. Tried to adjust the windows gamma, and then the Nvidia settings, I'm getting there, just need more time to toy around.
I followed the instructions posted here and downloaded many useful stuff: Cpuid HW monitor, Intel Turbo boost monitor, BatteryBar, Nvidia system tools and etc..
I am still playing with the power settings to find the best config for what best suits me in different settings. Now, I have the 12 cell and installed BatteryBar, it only shows around 2.5 hours when I unplugged the power and on power saving mode. Also I can confirm there's wiggling at the power input jack.
My biggest let-down is to find out how 320M is inferior to the earlier 230M (know think about it, lesser graphic card, no blueray disk at $1200 is definitely not a Great buy, still a good buy, but I definitely missed out on the greater bargains), not that it would really hinder my needs, since I'm not a hardcore 3D gamer, the only 3D game I casually play is WOW. Anyways, I followed the links of instructions posted here, found out my nvidia driver is the older 188.(something), I went up to download the newer 195.(something), only to find out it cannot be installed, the newer driver doesn't support my existing hardware. As when I searched for the new driver from Nvidia's pulldown I couldn't find one for the 3xxM series, only the 2xxMs, no love and support for 320M? On a side note, TurboBoost Monitor does show CPU gets up to 2.78Ghz when trying to install the new driver (even though just for a split of a second during peak), so I'm glad I'm getting my $$'s worth, and this little gadget is pretty cool.
I'm not sure if I got it right, but I think I read it here that someone said the 320M is a overclocked version of 230M (except the OCd version is inferior). I haven't tried to OC it yet, but Nvidia system monitor always freezes whenever I clicked it, not sure if this is due to the unseccessful install of the new driver. Anyways, has anyone tried to juice 320M yet and can maybe provide some safety guidance?
Now, later today I'm going to use it to edit and encode some HD videos to see how this beast roars, which is one primary reason why I got it. I remember rendering a 5 minutes HD video in youtube settings that warranted some 30-40 minutes on my AMD duo-core 2.6G, 3G RAM and 8600 gts desktop. Can't wait to see how this quad beast performs, as this is my first quad, really excited! -
How do I scroll on my trackpad? The bar on the right is not working.

I AM FED UP WITH THE DV6T QUAD.
i own a dv6t quad i7-720. Nvidia 320M.
just did a clean install.
1) I cannot find, after countless hours, any graphics card driver that would allow my screen resolution to go up to the native resolution. I am stuck at 1280x720!!!
Stock HP drivers wont work as well.
AS a matter of fact, I can't even find any drivers that will install on my DV6t quad (Including the 230M ones) -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
There isn't a single ForceWare Driver out yet that serves the proprietary GT 320M?
-
All the drivers I've downloaded stops and says they are incompatitable.
The one on HP's website installs Nvidia HD Audio. WT(f)! Where is the display driver?
I cant get out of that 1280x720 reoion! man!
Someone provide me a link that will work, . -
dude, google and install driverMAX, subscibe its free.. 2 downloads per day
-
Did you try http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ you have to download and extract the driver then you have to copy the downloaded modified inf file into the extracted files before installing the driver.
-
HP lists this http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-79609-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=4063&product=4011366 as the driver for GT320
Also in C: there is a directory called SwSetup it has all the drivers in drivers, the GPU is in Video. -
hi,
i have recently got GTA4 but i don't want to insert disk into the drive every-time i play the game. i also used daemon tools to run the game but even that did not work... can you guys suggest a workaround?? -
Daemon tools only works with image-files.. you know: .iso .bin .nrg etc.
you could replace the .exe file, i quote:

then youre doing it wrong
if you need detailed assistance you can PM me
What a great buy you made, trust me, just think of all the people buying inferior laptops who cost just as much or even more! Makes me appreciate my machine every time.
Second, no problem at all, I hope youve found ( some of) my posts and contributions helpfull..
I remember back in November doing the exact same thing as you!
Just show your appreciation by posting your experiences with the DV6 Quad here.
Thanks for the feedback youve given already!
Two questions I have now:
- Could someone post pictures of the architecture? The inside schematics? I need to know where the GPU/CPU are.
- How can you tell which ('version')/ date your laptop was made/shipped from the factory.
I'm kinda curious; want to compare it to Superfans' laptop, to see if there are newer generations/improved versions. -
can someone tell me what is the max speed of the Blu-Ray Drive?? it took around 45-50 mins to install GTA 4, then i created a dvd image yesterday using cybelink dvd and was amazed to find that it showed the max speed as 4x. if this is true then it's really frustrating.
-
Regarding 320m though, has anyone tweaked it yet? I followed khaledseif's guide ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5749575#post5749575), OC'd factory setting from 500/790/1100 to 650/948/1430 (anything beyond that, say 700 furmark will crash when benchmarking, even at 675 WOW will kick me out, lol), and furmark benchscore raised from 730 to 950 (don't have 3dmark06 to provide anything relevent) . for a OC newbie, I guess 30% stable performance increase is pretty solid. I'm curious at that the GPU isn't heating much when OCd at my current settings, Xtremem burning mode clocks stable 70C, does that mean there's more juice left out of 320m? because I'm only under the impression that it could (supposedly under load) go up to 80-90C, but then furmark wouldn't run 320m beyond 680, am I not doing it right?
btw, I have not experienced BSOD, and my fingerprint scanner works marvelously! -
i was watching a video of NFS shift on the games' website yesterday and it seemed to be very choppy and of poor quality. i had read somewhere that there are issues while watching online videos with this laptop. can anyone provide a solution?? i have the gt230m graphics card.

You should take the follwing into consideration:
- The quality of the video? HD 720p?
- Your internet speed.
And no, 230GT handles every video.. splendidly. -

How are the temps? Could someone post some gpu/cpu/hdd temps?
-
COD:MW2
Boderlands
GTA4 temps are the same as mass effect 2. -
Thanks! +rep!
Could you post temps just doing casual browsing/music or whatever? And if you could keep the labels from hwmonitor that would be fantastic...thanks again! -
See the problem with posting these temps is there is no *normal* ambient temperature in everyones house, and ambient temp has one of, if not THE biggest difference on your core temp, etc. I notice my *idle* temps vary as much as 10 C just based on where i am at the time (home, office, outside).
Even under GTA4 i never see over 75 C. -
Ya. we have summer now, so my ambient temps are pretty high. So the max temps increase. It had never gone above 78 (GPU) during winter.
