Did you purchase your LoJack as a seperate option or did you buy the care pack that includes LoJack?

Well, when I went through the options to configure the laptop, when lojack came up, I chose that. It wasn't in the care pack options.

The LoJack information comes with the laptop itself. It's with those other papers/coupons.

On a side note: Does anyone know what HP Tone Control is? I was going to disable it but wasn't sure.

Thanks for the input guys! Now all I have to do is decide between these two:
    HP DV6t Select Edition
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-450M Dual Core processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)with Turbo Boost up to 2.66 GHz
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA]
FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
FREE Upgrade to 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    Microsoft(R) Office Starter 2010
    No additional security software
9 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (over-sized)
15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)
TouchScreen with HP TouchSmart's intuitive multi-touch applications (includes HP TrueVision Webcam)
Blu-ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
    Backlit Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader
HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

    HP DV7t Select Edition
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-450M Dual Core processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)with Turbo Boost up to 2.66 GHz
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA] - For Dual Core Processors
FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
1TB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (500GB x 2) with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    Microsoft(R) Office Starter 2010
    No additional security software
9 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (over-sized)
    17.3" diagonal HD+ High-Definition HP LED BrightView Widescreen Display (1600 x 900)
Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
HP TrueVision Webcam and Fingerprint Reader
    Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
    Standard Keyboard
HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

I couldn't care less about portability, as long as its not a tank, so the only thing holding me back from getting the d7tse rather than the dv6tse is the fact that the dv7tse doesnt come with a backlit keyboard, and has no option for one.

Well it's "In transit" in Anchorage but still note for Int'l release. It's got an hour before the plane for Memphis leaves and after that I'm looking at Monday at the earliest. Ugh!

hi, can anyone tell me the thickness of the monitor of the laptop without the touchscreen feature? By centimetre? Someone told me the monitor with the touchscreen feature is approx. 1cm thick. But i want to compare the thickness of the non-touchscreen laptop and the touchscreen latop. im curious if the touchscreen would increase the thickness of the notebook. Thanks

I think they are the same. Becuase they would have to re-design the whole lid if they wanted to make it thicker, or you wound't be able to close the lid. Maybe the touchscreen is a little heavier. I'm not sure though, just guessing :)

Quick question about overclocking (totally wrong thread but I'm a bit lazy to search, besides I'm getting a dv6zse and that's almost relevant to this). If I overclock the gpu, does it reset back to the stock conditions if I turn the computer off or hibernate it?

I have no idea, but I don't think it's a good idea to overclock a laptop unless you have a very powerful cooling system.
It can result in BSODs, and the computer shutting down constantly due to overheating.

It's not a buzz. It's a millisecond-long noise, almost like a swiping sound. I restarted a few times and it seems to have disappeared for now. It's definitely coming from the speakers. I checked the sound profile settings and went through each one that was set to play and it wasn't there.

Thanks for the advice, I'm hoping my choice for AMD Phenom 2 n930 is a good one because of its cooler temperature. I'm basing this off the review of Abaddon's and his dv6zse seemed fine temperature wise. Unfortunately I didn't account for a cooling fan system so perhaps that'll set me back on how much I can game out of my laptop :(

You're very welcome. I think that laptop is ok for gaming, just not everything on highest settings.
The powerful gaming is handled by gaming desktops :) And yes I'm Flyff, this is my other account.

You can actually overclock the GPU to around 650 core, not sure about the memory though. Most users around here report it maxing around 70C which isn't actually that hot (normal temps for me).

MSI Afterburner is used for OCing. However, you have to edit the settings to allows for "unofficial overclocking" or something of that sort.

My only problem with it was that it bumped the speeds to 650 but it wouldn't drop it to idle (150/xxx). Secondly, it screwed up my powerplay to 300/300 and I had to reset my powerplay settings (toggled the options back and forth).

Yeah my brother has a super gaming desktop that he uses for "work" (dunno the specs since he took the computer with him for his internship out of state). I realized I wouldn't be getting the best gaming laptop with the Dv6z but I did want a computer capable of playing the most recent games out this year (Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age, probably the rest of whatever Bioware comes out with, [need to ask if Dawn of War 2 + Expansion runs smoothly on 5650]). Again, Abaddon's review seems like it ran perfectly on med-high settings and I watched youtube videos depicting the graphics card in action with such games like Mass Effect 2, Just Cause 2, and Crysis. It's a good thing I'm not a super gamer or I would be disappointed with myself. Also I don't really mind graphics since I've been playing games with horrible gfx setting already. This 5650 is a huge step up from integrated family chipset I've been using.

Yeah 650 matches with the next-tier Ati Radeon 5730 or something like that which in my opinion is quite good. Though again, I'm entirely novice to the idea of overclocking so I've been reading about it on NBR. Awesome community btw :p
I can probably guess what you mean by Idle but I'd like to hear an "official" meaning for it. Also, Powerplay?

I'll keep that in mind, from the sounds of it, it's not possible to keep your gpu oc'd when you turn it off/hibernate and therefore you have to open up the tool every time. Thanks for the response

From what i've been reading/watching, I keep hearing about some color differences that you get with the laptop depending on which i core you get ex: i5 is brown and black, i7 silver and black. It doesn't really matter but i'm just curious.

It really depends on the model, and how HP is marketing it in your country.

The dv6t is split into to models for the US: dv6t; and the dv6t Select Edition. The base dv6t comes in different outside colours (black cherry, sonoma red, shell white, and champagne/black keyboard - some colours cost more than others), and the customization process does allow you to have these different colours with an i3 or i5 core. The "Select Edition" is in the silver ("Argento") outside/black keyboard, and you can get either an i5 or i7 core.

In Canada, there's no "Select Edition" lineup. Any similar configuration available as a US Select Edition model in Canada is just another dv6t model. I remember reading some folks in Australia or GB posted HP did the same for their country.

Has this happened to anyone else with the dv6t-se, namely, that the fingerprint reader essentially goes dead after a while? You hit the power button and you're away from the laptop for a bit, then you come back to it and see the Windows 7 login screen, but the fingerprint reader light isn't flashing anymore and it won't react, and you have to use your password to log in the old-fashioned way.

I never did a clean install, and let the HP support assistant do some updates a little while back-- was that a mistake?

Well for you guys with the clearance delays, you are/were lucky. Just got off the phone with FEDEX and they have no clue where the package is. They're sending out a trace on it. Not happy at all.

Edit: Somehow it went to and cleared customs without the events being scanned. According to them it's supposed to ship to Memphis tonight and be here Monday.

Edit2: Looks like I might have gotten lucky and had it shipped on the direct flight from Anchorage to Chicago :) I'll know in a couple of hours but I guess there's an outside shot I could call the local center and grab it in the morning...I'm guessing they work on Saturdays?

There is a Windows Hotfix on HP download, that resolves the fingerprint reader not powering on after wake up.

Alright I'll try to explain this. In reading through this entire thread it's apparent that the difference between the two shipping options is one day....and that day comes from FEDEX rushing it through customs and then through their system.

They shipped your laptop today...very likely after the pickup time so today doesn't count. It's like when you go to ship an overnight package at the USPS after their last pickup of the night...it doesn't go until the next day. So really the 2 days begins on Monday....2 days from then is Wednesday. I'm going to guess that it'll sit in Shanghai (a lot better to sit there than up in Alaska) until Sunday night and then go through customs before essentially flying "overnight" to your distribution center for delivery Tuesday afternoon.

I settled for the free shipping. It shipped after the deadline for pickup. Yesterday it flew from Shanghai to Anchorage and sat in the customs office overnight. In 3 hours it'll be on a plane for Memphis and then should fly into Indianapolis late tonight before sitting there over the weekend. (It might just go on the direct Anchorage-Indy flight instead.) Fedex informed me that I'll get it on Monday which if you look at the calendar is basically 2nd day (and a day before the committment date.)

Does anyone else have a problem with their laptop waking up after sleeping for 15-20 minutes? I simply cannot find any solution.

EDIT: I found the culprit. When you go to power profiles>advanced, you need to set the 'hibernate after' to never. Mine was set at 20 mins for battery. It was waking up to go hibernate.

Thanks. I can't seem to find it though. I've had the laptop now for two weeks, and I know I downloaded several fixes. It doesn't seem to be out there as a visible fix. Then again, that was the only time I had the reader not wake up.

The lack of backlit keyboard on the d7 is a small price to pay for not having the extra row of function keys on the left hand side of the keyboard, IMO.

Leftside hotkeys is annoying to those who notice it as annoying. I don't think ts a problem. I use it alot, especially browser hotkey to launch Google Chrome. and when i type i don't hit control key. Honestly backlit is a huge price you pay if you want to get rid of it.

I was trying to get some further info on the dimensions of the Screen, and had a good time chatting with Amitkumar...

"Benjamin : but does the thickness of the screen change? Most likely only a few millimeters
Amitkumar : No it would be same.
Amitkumar : Just the infrastructure would be same.
Amitkumar : I mean the inernal parts will be different only.
Amitkumar : But the external things would be same.
    Benjamin : ok
Amitkumar : I must say, you have bought a very good Notebook.
    Benjamin : Thank you
Amitkumar : Congratulation for this new Notebook.
Amitkumar : I am sure you would love to use it.
Benjamin : Yeah, I hope it gets here in one piece :)
Amitkumar : If you face any issue anytime, we are always here to help you.
Amitkumar : Just contact us, we will help you with all the issues."

It puts my mind at ease to know that he will be there to "help me with all the issues." ;)

Anyone here have the screen dimensions? Mostly the thickness, non-touch and/or touch?

Oh you gotta love their scripts. I called for a status update the other night and heard the same things. Even asked me quasi-personal questions like what I was using the laptop for and what I like to do for leisure. I had little doubt they were India based since my former company trained them to do the same thing when they opened up shop in Pune. Then she tried to upsell me on a case or extra adaptor. At that point I asked about the education discount and that finally got her off my back with the sales pitch/interrogation. If you have any sort of problem or ask them something they can not help you with, they seem very willing to throw you a $30 bone for your trouble/time on the phone.

Just to add to my comment about finally getting through all 2200+ posts in this thread after I ordered the laptop... Around 1200 I really was second guessing myself on not getting the touchscreen and the 5650 GPU. When I finally got to the end of the thread a lot of that second guessing subsided (of course it helped greatly that the laptop was on the way by then.) If anything is wrong with it when it gets here, I am going to push heavily for them to give me the existing promotion when the order was placed (BR drive) and see if they either throw in or allow me to switch to the 5650 for the replacement.

For what it's worth, the lack of a backlit keyboard was the only thing that kept me from ordering the DV7. I do a large portion of my work in a dark bedroom while the wife is sleeping so the tradeoff was too great. The odd thing is that the DV7 with a 5650 was going to run the same as the DV6 with the same GPU and a backlit keyboard....so essentially a $25 upgrade cost between the two models.

I didn't opt for the backlit keyboard simply because I was being a bit of a money pincher and didn't think it had that much use besides glowing appeal. Hopefully my typing skills are where I imagine them when I end up in a dark room scenario and have to type to save my life.
