Is there a way to monitor when the cpu overclocks itself in "turbo boost" speeds?

Ok so I just finally got the education discount to work (with no help AT ALL from HP's disgustingly terrible online chat support), and the discount is only around 6%. I am a highschool student, so do I get a lower discount than college students?

Indiana University's is only 6% as well. I think it all depends on the deal worked out between the school and HP....probably over things like volume of sales and purchases made by the schools' themselves for computer labs/departmental use.

On another note....this has been the longest day ever while waiting for the FEDEX truck. Slightly irritated that they are normally in the area mid-morning and now it's sitting in one of their trucks baking as they take their sweet natured time getting over here.

Atleast you didn't miss it yet, my deliver came while I was at work and all they did was leave a note saying attempt 1 was taken. Problem is if it comes at the same time tomorrow then there's no way I'm going to be at home because of a test; attempt 2. So I have some options: ask a friend to drive me to the fedex 20 minutes away and pick it up there; leave my signature on the door tag tomorrow and they'll leave the package there until I come back; wait to Wednesday where I'll be home for sure.

I'm hoping my friend is fine with carpooling me :p

It came a half hour ago. I confronted the driver about the delivery time and was flat out told that even if mine was the only non-Priority shipment in his truck, he wasn't allowed to deliver it until the afternoon. So yeah....some wiseguy in Memphis is deciding it's worth wasting 2 gallons of gas and a 20 minute round trip in the afternoon to save the 2 minutes on the morning route. I'm just thankful Amazon doesn't use these idiots and sticks with UPS!

Mine did the same until Saturday. Then it sat in Memphis until yesterday afternoon and made the trip up.

From the looks of things HP ships a huge chunk of laptops all at once and then when they get to Memphis affix the actual address labels. (Of course it looks that way but I'm sure they are all labeled in China and put in a cummunal container for the trip from Shanghai to Memphis.

Can anyone else notice the fan noise when their computer is idling? I'm in a fairly quiet room and I can hear it even at idle.

Dcoaster, if you set the bios to 'always fan on' to off, my fan doesn't run at all. Elsewise, I can hear it slightly when the laptops idling. Right now though, there's no air coming out of my fan vent with fan always on set to off.

As for monitoring turbo boost, there's a sidebar gadget you can get on the intel website that shows you when your laptop is boosting. It's really just a blue bar that shows your turbo frequency.

This keyboard squeak is kind of annoying. Oh well, just need to get my G15 setup on this guy.

Don't want to jinx it but I gave it a pretty detailed inspection and it looks like I got everything as it should be. Trackpad seems to be well set, no "bend" where the keyboard meets the metal, no gouges, and it looks like the bottom panel was seated as it should have been. The ONLY I've had is the documented issues with resting your thumb on the left "button" while moving the cursor. Creating the discs now and them will get to work on deactivating the bloatware and customizing it using the settings from this thread/the info thread/starters guide.

I will say if you are on the fence about this system and are scared off by some of the bad experiences, don't be scared off by a few issues. If I were told I had to recommend a laptop to family/friends I would wholeheartedly recommend this one. The only regret I have is not spending the extra money for the 5650 GPU.

For those wondering, I have the base configuration with the free BR-ROM, 5470 GPU, and extra battery. My Windows Experience ratings are: Processor 6.8, RAM 5.9, GPU 5.1, Gaming Graphics 6.3, and Primary HDD 5.9...which means a base reading of 5.1. (My Toshiba was a 4.9 off of 4.9, 4.9, 5.6, 5.1, and 5.2 marks.) Like I said, I have no doubt that I'd be hovering around 6 if I had gotten the 5650 GPU.

I got this, which looks like what you have there but a different color and a better price. My laptop with the 9-cell battery fits perfectly (that's what you get when you buy a case made by the manufacturer lol) and has a front pocket for papers or CDs - I haven't tried to put my wireless mouse in there yet but it should fit.

Oh, I didn't know they took it down lol. I found it accidentally when I was checking out for updated turbo boost drivers.

Has anyone used the 10.7 catalyst drivers? If it helps a lot I'll install them, but the only annoyance i've been getting with my current factory ones are seeing an out-of-date driver notification once.

LOL so I was looking for the dimensions of the laptop on HP's website, and couldnt find anything, so I decided to contact their online technical support. Just thought I'd share how intelligent HP's technical support guys are:

Roy Gavin : Could you please elaborate on the issue?
(Me) : I am simply wondering what the dimensions of the dv6t Select Edition are.
(Me) : I could not find the dimensions on HP's website
Roy Gavin : Its 2 dimensional.

    DERP.
So anyway, I'll post the dimensions if I ever get them out of this guy.

EDIT: So the dimensions that the guy gave me were totally off, so I just decided to take them down.

Well I just got my laptop now (dv6z-se) and I love it. Resolution is indeed a bit strange but I've gotten used to it now. Keyboard's a bit of a steeper curve to get used to because of the shift to the right due to the quick-keys on the left side. I think my biggest concern right now is figuring out how to turn off gestures on the mousepad, it's driving me bonkers atm.

I bought the biscotti case and there was an instant rebate for purchasing it with the laptop, but I'm not sure if that was because of my academic discount. Either way it has to be on the same order so select it when you get to the accessories part of customization and see what happens in the checkout cart. There's also a black one but it's not the jetstream design with the handle. They don't even sell it through their own store!

The case itself is nice. It's neoprene, so there's a bit of an odor but just spray some Febreze in it and leave it open and it'll be fine. The main compartment is big enough to hold the laptop with a 9-cell battery. There's a front pocket for accessories or papers or whatever.

Still loving it but can't get the trackpad settings right. I like to rest my finger on the left button but it keeps screwing things up. Downloaded that new driver and don't know what to change. Sitting in a dark living room with the backlit keyboard was nice. The back of the screen is like a freaking flashlight in the dark.

Alright, this is driving me insane now; I've practically scoured Google for a way to activate Stereo Mix or anything similar on the dv6 and I still can't broadcast or record in-computer audio. Has anyone tacked this yet?

EDIT1:I've gotten to the part where I've re-enabled Stereo Mix from the control panel, but I can't figure out how to change its status from "currently unavailable."

EDIT2: Heh, fiddled with the recording tab and thought "screw it, I'll disable everything" and as soon as I did Stereo Mix activated. Apparently the sound card can only handle two inbound sources at once. (I had the integrated array, an external mic, and stereo mix all on at the same time.)

Here's a question: ever since I first used my new dv6t-se I'm getting a prompt by the Java software updater to update Java to the latest version. I give it the go-ahead, the installer runs, but then a couple of days later it's prompting me to do the exact same thing, and to the same version of Java (Java 6, update 21 or something). Has anyone figured out what's up with that?

BTW, I use Firefox as my browser, if it helps.

If you purchased HP Recovery discs, do you still need to create recovery discs?
What exactly is the point of purchased recovery discs and are they different from the ones you can create?

You might want to make your own set of recovery discs because the data those discs are created from is customized to your laptop. The purchased discs have just the basic recovery data which means you might then have to go ahead and download drivers for whatever is not on those discs. From reading through the thread the general consensus is that burning your own recovery discs is absolutely necessary if you have the touchscreen.

If you are going to burn them, plan on about an hour and a half for the 5 discs to actually burn/verify.

Both the 64-bit and the 32-bit are installed in the laptop. Have you tried updating both versions?

It's one of the first thing I un-installed right after I got my laptop and then re-installed to the latest version by downloading from the JAVA website

I wouldn't expect it to leave Anchorage until tomorrow then. Mine cleared around 3 CDT and it left the next morning.

One other thing that I found interesting but forgot to mention yesterday. My box was on the outside of the large shipment out of China. All kinds of dirt and grime on the top and one side. The shipping label showed 562 pieces. It makes me think there's only 3 or 4 of these mega-shipments that leave the factory everyday.

If you're like me and want your computer to start up as fast as it can, make sure you disable HP Wireless Assistant. It cut my startup time from about 80 seconds to 55 seconds.

55 seconds still seems to be quite long. Do you have added programs on startup from the original settings? Also i'm guessing you did not get the SSD?

Hey guys, I'm loving this laptop, did a clean install and seem to have everything back to working. Has anyone had any success getting the fingerprint reader to work with Chrome?

Also, I downloaded Rainmeter, and was able to find a sweet skin for it, called Omnimo 2. Here's my desktop right now: [IMG]

Cazper please can you add the following info to your laptop Guide? and add the link to your guide in your signature so people won't have to go back every X amount of pages to find it. Also if you can can you please integrate the helpful posts after yours on that guide into your one large post as most users just skim through yours and don't bother to read all the posts following.

Hey everybody for those who are having problems with Google Chrome not working with Fingerprint reader, read this, scroll to bottom, Digital Persona and Google Chrome both have faults for not supporting this:
Finger print reader compatability - Google Chrome Help
It looks like Chrome won't be having support for a while. I've been using Internet Explorer 64-bit version (No need to download it its already installed on your laptop) for web browsing, it works GREAT with every website, and you do not get hacked so easily as 64bit IE is not so hackable as the 32bit. This IE 64bit used in combination with Simple Adblock for IE blocks everything bad, GREAT alternative! For watching videos use IE 32bit (also no need to download already installed on your laptop), as flash and most other addons are disabled for 64bit version.

General note before downloading softwares noted below: They may slow up your startup time and may take up resources, so download with that in consideration

ok, if you bought your laptop without lojack like me, and if you for whatever reason think you're a forgetful person and need a theft protection software installed, i highly recommend this free alternative called Prey, its proven and tested by many downloaded users to work without any susicpous behavior exhibited by many free alternatives out there. They use thermal pads on two of the chips up top (silver squares), and thermal paste on Northbridge Chip and Graphics Chip as seen in the pic. If you have your own thermal pastes like Artic Silver 5 just apply the new paste on northbridge chip and graphics chip after you remove the default thermal paste with a alchol wipe and make sure old paste is completely removed. Ignore the red-circles in the picture lol.

Well now that I've tweaked all the oddities in the settings I can finally stop complaining and say that this is one of the best laptops I've had in a long time. I have the i5-540m and I idle at 38-41C and haven't reached higher than 85C under max load.

I must have weird ears, because my sound settings are completely different from the Awesome Sound Guide. Then again, I do not use the laptop speakers, and primarily use external speakers headphones. On my old desktop I had a Creative sound card and I liked one of the EQ presets so I saved it and used it in the IDT setup this computer has.

In addition to this I use the Bass Boost option from the sound control panel at 125Hz/+6dB and Volume equalization. To me this produces ideal sound, but then again I'm no audiophile and maybe my ears are just weird. *shrug*
