How to upgrade dv6t 61XX screen to 1080p:
Here we go. Do all the procedures defined in this document at your own risk. I will not be held responsible for any damage you do to your system from them.
There, now that's over, we can get on the the process.
1) Order the 1080p display cable from HP partsurfer. The part number is 656805-001. Then order a compatible screen like the AUO B156HW0x lines, or the LG LP156WF1.
2) Follow the dv6t service manual for more detailed directictions as far as exact screw placement and such. First remove the top cover. Before that however, you need to remove the hard drive, optical drive, and keyboard. The keyboard requires that you remove the one screw from the back, then press in the hole that the
screw was in. The first time the keyboard comes out, it requires quite a bit of force to remove, but don't worry, it won't break. You are pressing on the metal frame, not the plastic. Just apply pressure slowly until the top right corner snaps out, then snap and hold the whole top edge and slide toward the display assembly. The hard drive is straichtforward, just remove the screws and gently unseat the cable and remove the drive. The optical drive is even easier. Remove the one screw and slide it out. After you have all the screws holding the top cover and speaker bar removed, disconnect the 3 ZIF connectors from the motherboard, then put your fingernail between the dark umber/silver aluminum and the plastic frame and seperate them. Start at the top and release all the latches there, then down the sides. When the top and sides are released, lift the top until the bottom comes free. Then gently remove the speaker bar above the keyboard.
3) Remove the 2 screws from the display casing and gently pry the edge between the bottom of the bezel and the LCD screen away from the screen. The latches on the bottom should release. You are supposed to release the rest of the bezel from the sreen side, not the outside, but I couldn't get that to work, so I just pried from the outside. I broke one latch, but I can't tell that it is broken. There is no wiggle in the bezel. After the latches are released, gently pull the bezel away from the screen. There is adhesive between the bezel and the metal border on the screen, so go slowly and don't break the bezel. After the adhesive is released, the bezel should lift out.
4) remove the screws holding the hinge covers on and remove the hinge covers. Just pull from where the screw was and it should come out.
5) Tilt the whole panel casing back as far as it will go. This prevents the casing from falling and putting stress on the cable. remove the 3 screws in each side of the hinge holding it to the back of the display case. Remove the 2 screws at the top of the panel holder. At this point the display case is no longer attached to the hinge ot the panel, so gently lower it to the table. Then remove the screws from each side of the panel holder to release the screen. tilt the panel forward just enough to be able to get your hand in there and release the cable. If you go too far, it will put stress on the cable. When that is released, pull the panel out.
6) At this point you can pull the old cable out and put the new one in. Pay close attention to where the cable is layed so you put the new one where it won't get pinched. You also must remove the connectors for the webcam and the HP logo on the back. The webcam connector connects just to the right of the display cable on the motherboard, and it runs up to the webcam board at the top of the display case. The HP logo cable only makes an appearance just unter where the display dable connects to the display. Be very careful placing the cable around the hinge area, if you place it wrongly it will be pinched when you screw the hinge back to the casing. Make sure the cable is seated in the channel correctly before re-screwing the hinge. I would suggest laying out the cable before actually inserting it in the channel since this will prevent you from leaving too much on one end and not enough on the other.
7) When the cable is placed correctly, put the new panel in the space and screw it in to the hinge arms. tilt the hinge forward until you can attach the new cable to the screen. When this is done, attach the webcam cable to the webcam and lift the back of the display casing up until the panel is seated in it and there are no wires being pinched. Make sure to check the WLAN wires running up the right side. Also make sure that the HP logo cable is hanging below the panel, not between it and the casing. Now re-attach the screws holding the back casing to the hinge assembly Carefully, not pinching cables. Then re-attach the HP logo cable and put the hinge covers back and screw them in. Now you can put the display bezel back and press it firmly in on all sides until it is snapped in. Then put the screws back and the rubber covers.
8) put back the speaker bar and top cover. Press the edges of the top cover straight down, do not slide them in. They will snap nicely if you push straight down. Now attach all the screws and replace the keyboard, hard drive, and optical drive. Put back all the screws holding those on and replace the service cover.
I haven't included exact motions for removing many of the parts, as you really must just play with them until they come loose. The manual says you must, but you don't have to remove the WLAN module or the system board. The manual also shows removing the display assembly from the main body, but I didn't.
I also took some pictures of the disassembled laptop.

What can you say about new screen? Is that the same which hp is putting onto 1080p versions? Is it matte?
Anyway thx for detailed guide! -
-
And what's the difference? -
Tried to search on
LAPTOP SCREEN, LCD panels from $42. Dell, HP Compaq, Toshiba, Acer, IBM Lenovo, Sony, Gateway, Apple, Asus replacement screen display panel
and found few LG screens...
Screen compatible with part number LP156WF1(TL)(F3)
Screen compatible with part number LP156WF1(TP)(B1)
Screen compatible with part number LP156WF1(TL)(E2)
Screen compatible with part number LP156WF1(TL)(E1)
Screen compatible with part number LP156WF1(TL)(C1)
Screen compatible with part number LP156WF1(TL)(A1) -
I can't comment on the quality of the AUO screen, but the LG is very good. It was preinstalled on my machine and it's probably the best laptop screen I've ever seen.
-
For those interested, It may also be possible to install a 15.6" 1600x900 screen as well.
The part numbers would be:
- LG LP156WD1 (XX)(XX)
- AUO B156RW01 V.X
If you were to pick one, pick the LG. I've seen both (LG in a Dell Latitude, AUO in a Lenovo Thinkpad) - the LG seems to look slightly better -

What is the difference between the sub-models of the LP156WF1? Would the LP156WF1(TL)(A1) work??? Upgradeyourlaptop has them for $70....
How much is the 1080p cable? -
-
-
-
went ahead and order the cable and screen. should be here in a few days. its funny how i order the parts even though i don't even have my laptop atm. its at hp for repairs on backlight issues.

Ill definitely follow your guide. Ill updates when i get it install. Thanks autoarc for creating the guide and giving us nimrods a chance to upgrade our display with ease.
-
Does anybody know, if the FHD display cable is also available in europe?
HP Europe´s site says, ask a local dealer... -
Ye, i also don't understand how to order cabel, why it can't be ebay
-
i got the screen. follow autoarc guide. replace the screen. it was quite easy following the guide. didn't lose or have extra screws afterwards. turn on the display. it was awesome just to have the 1080p screen. check for any dead or stuck pixels and turns out i have one stuck pixels near the bottom of the screen. ran a pixel repair all night. check this morning and its still there. other then the stuck pixel, this screen is very nice. thanks all.
update: spoke to the seller, http://go.redirectingat.com/?id=525...oks/610177-hp-dv6t-display-replacement-2.html
and he does not return for 1 dead or stuck pixels. so it seems like im stuck with this. i have already tried the screen repair apps and website. i have applied pressure to it. any other method i should try to attempt to fix this stuck pixel? -

How long did it take you guys for HP to ship out the cable? Got the screen from the ebay seller a couple days ago, but HP is still listing the order as being processed. It's been just under a week.
Half expecting it to show up on my doorstop soon though, maybe HP doesn't like to update the status online. -
After I ordered it, the HP website never got updated as to order status. About a week after I ordered it, a box showed up on my doorstep. Unfortunately, in the box was the top cover to a dv2. HP had sent me the wrong part. I called, and they said they'd ship me the right part and I would send the top cover back. Sent back the top cover, and about a week and a half later, still no sign of the right part, even on the website. Not even a status page. I called again and they said that the re-order had not gotten through the system, and that they would send it post haste. They also gave me 2 day delivery for free on that last one. So, I finally got it after several weeks of waiting. -
Thanks for the guide AutoArc. Just ordered the cable & screen today, will post results.
-
Got the cable in the mail today. The HP Parts Store is still listing the order as being processed, so their info is worthless. Be doing the installation tomorrowish, so I'll let everyone know how mine goes.
And thanks again to AutoArc for the guide. -
Alright, done successfully. Screen and everything else is working, viewing angles are vastly better with the new screen.
Definitely have to say, it took me a lot longer than I anticipated to go through and tinker with everything. Quick word of advice to everyone...ORGANIZE YOUR SCREWS!
Myself, however, like to do things the hard way.
And another side note, there's one dead pixel at the very bottom center, fortunately it's out of the way, and wouldn't be worth it to me to trade it out again. -
I wonder how to open the screen?
-
I am looking into doing this too. How much did you guys end up paying for the cable? I was able to find a glossy version of the LP156WF1 for quite cheap, but it looks like the cable will cost me more than the screen
-
-
Couldn't you maybe take a photo (or find a photo) of the display cable you used? i might have found a compatible one (from a dv7) and would like to see if it's actually the same cable
-
Warning!
I received a Matte LP156WF1(TP)(B1) from laptopscreen.com and it has a 30-pin connector instead of the appropriate 40-pin connector for a DV6T-6000 QE.
I am in process of attempting to exchange for a Matte LP156WF1(TL)(F3) after confirming it is 40-pin.
I received both the dual channel cable from HP and the LCD in 6 days.
The HP cable works fine with the original monitor. -
Yeah the (TP)(B1) in some cases has a 30 pin connector. You need to check out the model specifications to make sure it has a 40 pin connector.
The (TL)(A1) and (TL)(F3) have 40 pin connectors. The reason that some of the (TP)(B1) have a 30 pin connector is that it is a model built for DELL laptops. -
I wonder when will this cable be available on ebay so anyone could order it, not only US citizens.
-
if the display cable cost 44 dollars, then it is not wroth to upgrade the panel.
-
Does that mean all 1366x768 panels have 30 pin ribbon cables?
Can some please post the hp part number for the actual 1080p panel from hp, thanks.
According to hwinfo my LCD panel is a Chi Mei N156B6-L0B. After researching the net the panel has a 40 pin connector. Does this mean the original cable will fit, or is there some other kind of difference between a 40 pin 768p ribbon cable and a 40 pin 1080p ribbon cable. -
-
Can this work with a dv6-6135DX?
a yes or no would be great! -
Yes it will work. All of the HP-DV6-6000 series use the same screen type.
If you want 1080p get :
LP156WF1(TL)(XX)
I would be replacing the screen ,but am not motivated enough to buy the $45 display cable...
Good price on the best screen : LP156WF1(TL)(F3) replacement Laptop LCD Screen from $79.99 Brand-new screens (never used).
If you are going from 1366x768 to 1080p just be aware that you need the upgraded display cable from HP.
I would like to add, for all those non-US individuals like myself, you can order the cable from here , however shipping is quite expensive : http://www.alinctech.com/Display-Cable-Kit-ALU-FHD.html
(Cable costs $23 but shipping is $36 to Canada... :O) -
The HP parts store no longer let me add the display cable to the cart.
-
They are an HP preferred partner supposedly. -
-
I have a HP dv6-6135dx laptop.
I wanted to know even though I read the manual and all the posts if there is any reason that the old LCD Cable Kitt part number 644362-001
will not work with the LG PHILIPS LP156WF1(TL)(F3) LAPTOP LCD SCREEN 15.6" Full-HD LED DIODE?
I saw the recent post saying that the old cable will work and I wanted to know if this refered to LG PHILIPS LP156WF1(TL)(F3) as well?
I expect the answer is you have to replace the cable to the FHD model that was mentioned in the initial instructions, but I wanted to know is there a real need for the change.
I also saw a recent video that did not require you to take apart the top panel, but this is because he did not change the cable.

Thanks! -
-
I am thinking of getting the nice dell rgbled panel for the DV6, or are the screen backlisted, so we cannot install anything different? -
I cracked my FHD screen on a train, a local repair shop replaced the screen with LG LP156WF2. It works perfectly with my DV6t. The difference between LP156WF1 and LP156WF2 is that LP156WF2 is a FHD glossy screen. If glossy is your thing, then you should look that up. So far, I feel the new LP156WF2 is a little better than the AOU screen I cracked.

Bad news is, the cable in my country has jumped from $51 usd to about $103 usd, and that is without shipping added.
Not sure if I want to pay so much for a ribbon cable. Don't really understand how the price can just change like that?
