I am thinking about purchasing a HP dv6xxx series notebook or the New Toshiba A205 series. I hate how all the ports are on the side. With my current laptop I have the power connection, ethernet and 2 usb coming out of the back.

If i purchases a new notebook, i'd have cords coming out of both sides, which would get in the way of my mouse, books etc. and would look ugly since my notebook spends 95% of its life on my desk.

How does everyone else deal with all the cords coming out the the sides?

If I got a docking station, how many cords would there then be coming from the sides? How so docking stations connect?

    Thanks

Probably none, the docking station has usually enough ports to handle the tasks.
BTW, the special hinge design of dv6000 has it's own merits too.

How does the docking station connect? Wont it need to plug into the side?

Does the notebook get charged through the docking station connection, or will the notebook power cord still need to be plugged in?

AFAIK it has it's own power supply. As for the docking ports dv6000 has two, one at the bottom and one at the sides.

If I had a 95% requirement for a desktop then I would buy a desktop computer. When I have a MORE than 10-15% requirement for a laptop then I would buy a laptop then. Come to think of it, that is exactly what I did, bought a desktop first and a laptop. Just my opinion. Came in pretty handy too as when the laptop broke down, I still have a desktop to use until I got another laptop.

As far as the side ports, they are actually well placed as it is easier to connect any hardware and the DVD drive is adjacent to where you would need to put your mouse if you are right handed of course.

And for the docking station, check out this link http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/notebook/notebook_hp/dock_solutions/1/accessories/ES234AA%23ABA

Which DV6000 where you looking at?

The DV6000 series has *one* docking port on the left hand side, closer to the back.

AIA I don't have any problems dealing with cables coming out sidewards.

Didn't realize how expensive docking stations were.

I think maybe i'll keep my current laptop that is only 7 months old and buy a desktop instead. Have 2 computers instead of just a laptop. 95% of the time i'd probably use the desktop anyways
