How big is your SSD and what brand? I tried to do a restore on a 60GB Vertex 2 I had just to do some testing, and it gave me the same error message. Tried it on a 120GB Intel and it worked just fine. So it was either the size or brand or both, I dunno.

the ssd is a Plextor M3 Series PX-128M3 2.5" 128GB SATA III

googling this error along with my exact laptop model ( DV6-6135DX refurb )
showed some users on this forum with the same issue.

hey guys, just ran into a problem. My ] key just up and popped off, and I can't get it so snap back on. It either hooks into one side or the other, but not both. Any suggestions? is there some kind of secret to this that I'm just not getting? does it require magic?
-
khuyah: If you have 6135dx refurb, they added an R to one of the product codes when it was refurbished. Recovery discs no longer work on them because of this, so either you need a clone/shrink or fresh install and copy the OEM activation fingerprint with ABR. It is irritating but not very hard to get around.
yarez3: Unless someone here has a more specific suggestion, search on google or howtofix or such. Although I hear that on some models the bracket key will pop off if a screw underneath was not properly tightened (hence pushing from below the keyboard). -
Mine is also loose but no problem.

I can run prime95 for hours with k10stat locked at 2.4 1.0875v. Temps stay under 80C. I can run Kombuster for hours at 770/950. But when I run both together, although the temp tops out at 87C, I get a display driver has failed error, usally between 20-30 minutes in. Any ideas? Seems fine when run independantly.

Try bumping the CPU voltage up a notch and/or dropping GPU clocks down 10MHz and see what happens. This is why you test for stability though. If it doesn't happen when not overclocked then it's clearly an issue with your overclocks. On the other hand, if games and other programs don't exhibit any odd behavior then you can probably just use it like that. Prime95 + Kombustor is really kind of a worse case stress test. I haven't seen any game that can stress the machine as much as that test. BF3 is close, but still less intense.

REFRESHED the 6620G Benchmark Results with:
- proper GPU speed, 444MHz (instead of 200MHz first time, d'oh!)
- added 1066MHz CAS 7
- added 1600MHz CAS 9
http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...g-benchmarked-various-ram-configurations.html
Bottom line, it's not very dependent on CAS timings, but moreso on speed and single or dual channel.
- Difference between 1066MHz and 1333MHz RAM was about 15-20%
- Difference between 1333MHz and 1600MHz was about 5-10%
- CAS 9 vs CAS 11 1600MHz was less than 5%, on average almost even. -
Anybody knows if there are hidden (not connected) USB ports in this laptops? I have been using lately a very nice Bluetooth stick that can perfectly fit inside the laptop case, which would use for my ps3 controllers...
-
Hmm good question. There's two 2.0 and two 3.0 external. I believe the webcam and card reader both use one. I don't know that there are any actual ports inside, but maybe be able to solder one on if you can find the points. I always thought that would be a good idea. Actually a mPCIe slot should be in every laptop for SSD, and maybe a USB adapter or something. I remember early days of the Eee's people were dismantling and soldering USB flash drives inside their machines for extra storage.
So did you remove stock wi-fi card or did yours just not come with bluetooth? -
yeah what i was planning on doing since the discs didnt work was do a minimal install and clone the hdd to the sdd however after switching back to the hhd my F11 in bios to restore option broke saying something about the boot\bcd\ needs repairing.
in an attempt to fix that i fubar it even more by
1. deleting HP_Tools ( which i tried to reinstall using that one that installer package from hp, but it was no go because apparently i already have 4 partitions, which i dont anymore..)
then..
2. I did a clean install of windows 7 using a real windows dvd in hopes that it will "repair" that boot\bcd or whatever and somehow F11 will work again BUT it didnt.
so yeah my only hope is getting these recovery dvds to work.
( i understand i can just used my windows 7 dvd and install the drivers manually but i would much prefer hps minimal install ) -
goresnet: There is also a small chance that heat accumulation is affecting your video RAM. It's been mentioned before, but when you cross a certain threshold more heat will accumulate more quickly. Plus if you are hitting up to 87C there may be CPU throttling too, in which case the problem occurs when clock rate forcibly drops to a pstate with unstable voltage for that temperature. I'd say drop back to 2.3GHz and 750/950, raise every pstate by one tiny voltage step.
HT: Thanks so much for updating! I'll check it out now.
I remember my Eee701. Sturdy and flexible. But it will lose to a phone these days... Yeah, one guy populated all the internal USB with GPS and blue tooth etc, wired in FM transmitter and other crazy things. Nice to have extra ports but I think fewer laptops have them unless a board goes in different size machines. -
My laptop is one of the very first rounds of llano in the whole world
, bought in germany quite a while, but unfortunately for me the first batch of computers came with an A6 and no bluetooth.
-
Wait, you're saying you can't do a clean install on your system from a regular Windows DVD?
That should work fine, right? Unless HP is like storing part of the BIOS on the hard drive or something?! Surely not though...it would be possible (Sony sort of does that with the new PS3s, though that's different since they're all the same) but I don't remember that being done on a PC, save maybe for some weird models from strange companies in the past?
EDIT: Okay, sounds like you CAN do a clean install from what Calc said, and I was just misunderstanding. Thank goodness, that would be super weird if you couldn't! -
khuyah: You've really done it then. At this point clean install is the place to start. You need to examine your partition layout with disk manager, see if anything can be renamed or repaired (probably not?). Most likely you need to just clean install on the SSD and follow a tutorial to further trim your Win7. Then clone THAT in case it all goes to hell again. See if you can at least salvage your HP OEM activation (should be possible if you only REPAIR installed from the DVD)

See here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...t-upgrades/642266-processors.html#post8281686
Of note:
" (Ivy Bridge) Notebook CPUs Core i7-3920Qm, 3820QM and 3720QM will be released in April priced at US$1,096, US$568 and US$378, respectively. Other models including Core i5-3520M, 3360M, 3320M and ultrabook CPUs Core i7-3667U and Core i5-3427U will be unveiled later."
$378 for lowest end Quad? And $1096 for the extreme edtion? Are you kidding me? Me thinks Trinity will be the way to go, probably < $250 too. Yes I know AMD won't be as powerful as Intel for CPU, but I've learned this A8 is plenty fast for my needs, so anything more will be icing. Not to mention the IGPU. I hope we can get a solid release date commitment from AMD soon. -
3920...maybe XM not QM? (fully unlocked)
Ivy Bridge is so amazingly expensive that I really wonder if they plan for it to coexist with Sandy Bridge as a high-class cousin for some time. These are Y2K prices for CPU....with AMD targeting sub-$1000 and sub-$600 Ultrabook markets for their ULV, and even the A8-3850 or 3530M were pretty cheap. No comparison there. You will not see many Trinity chips above $200 judging from NewEgg prices for Phenom II and Llano. Put another way, unless Intel has some huge discount program running again, manufacturers will be able to sell AMD laptops for the price of just the i7 chip.
...but 2630QM isn't nearly as expensive, right? I really wonder if the 2xxx series is being retired or supplemented. -
He also mentioned the 3515QM and 3610QM so those will most likely be the "low end" quad core replacements for the 2630/2670QM. Even so, that's ridiculously expensive.
-
So I checked again on NewEgg. A couple things:
Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more!
16-way Interlagos (2.1GHz) with server mobo, bundled price only $820 for both. So even the "high end" server chips are not likely to exceed $1000.
Newegg.com - AMD A8-3850 Llano 2.9GHz Socket FM1 100W Quad-Core Desktop APU with DirectX 11 Graphic AMD Radeon HD 6550D AD3850WNZ43GX - Processors - Desktops
OEM A8-3850 $135 including Dirt 3. (no heatsink tho) This bears out my $200 gaming machine theory since everything else I need can be reused. (just need mobo)
I can't see Trinity chips costing very much at all. AMD should have a pretty firm grip on bang-for-buck since Intel feels confident in profit-taking.
EDIT
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103961
3.1GHz octo-core for $200.....They're practically GIVING these things away! Lots of people in the feedback claiming it will go over 4GHz with an affordable cooler too. Now...you need a pretty good excuse to buy one of these, but I expect it will push decent rendering numbers in any multimedia program that uses the SSE4.2 and other advanced features. Else it makes a cut-rate server chip for high volume colocation or small-office thin clients.
EDIT2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819106002
Turns out the 3670K costs the same as the 3650 right now. Excellent. Comes with Dirt 3.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103942
Turns out the boxed 3850 is also $135 and also comes with Dirt 3.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819106001
OH HELL the 3870K is only ten bucks more ($145!!) Doesn't come with the game. One fellow claims to have overclocked the iGPU to nearly 850MHz....that would be DAMN impressive speed if true. -
I can't believe how cheap AMD's chips are, and frankly it worries me for them. Seems like they've got their act together now with stability and compatibility, now that they make their own chipsets.
Their CPUs maybe aren't AS fast at the same clock speed as Intel's, but they're no joke-I mean compared to anything else they're monsters.
And they're building these gigantic chips now and throwing them at you for free. It's awesome for us, but I do hope they make money to keep going forever! I love having two/three super competent companies making chips! -
AMD's FX-8150 further overclocked - The Tech Report - Page 1
In multithreaded tests the overclocked FX 8150 was doing quite well against even overclocked 2600K. I wish they had included an update to Truecrypt AES numbers also, just for comparison. And if some folks are going above 5GHz with water cooling now, those numbers would be a little higher yet.
Intel's Core i7-3960X processor - The Tech Report - Page 1
AH. Intel is doing six-core i7s as well as Xeons now. And GUH the work/power numbers for Cinebench are better than a 2600K, so they improved the process somewhere. And GUH it overclocked to 4.8GHz.... Okay, if the Ivy Bridge refresh includes an updated six-core with good overclocking for $1000, I can see folks with workstations splashing out for it. But I shall take my savings and be grateful (for I do not need that extra margin) -
I've got someone asking my how this system does with Skyrim. Anyone have any thoughts on Skyrim with like an A8 integrated GPU, or with the seperate GPU?
I did a search on the thread as I was SURE I'd even read performance numbers before for Skyrim, but apparently not! -
So i just installed 12.2 Review, and the package include alot of stuff that 12.1/12.1a dont have.
Finally I see a option for AMD APP install. and now I can use ATI MPEG video decoder on my MPC, gonna do some reserah and see how it compare to DXVA(maybe it is just DXVA? idk).
Edit: and 12.2 include a AMD build in video converter rather than just support acceleration. -
6620G is amazingly proficient. Check the link in HT's signature. Should run Skyrim in medium or so. AMD converter is probably still crap, as of 11.11c it could not process MOST video containers....
-
Ok, just test the "ATI decoder". It just freak out whenever i put it on dGPU. O well, I am truck with soft decode untill ATI get something out like CUDA zzz.
edit : and It crap out with my old even setup zzz.
Either need some new software that support ATI stuff or ATI need to get stuff work with others .
hm.. still dont work, gonna roll back and try the decoder again
Back to 12.1 now, 12.2 definitely have something to do with switchable graphics ~~ -
Yeah, Skyrim should be no issue. I was planning on doing just some general gaming next and reporting fps back for reference. I would do some gameplay videos using a video camera, but I can't find time when my kids aren't running around screaming so you don't hear them in the videos.
-
Too bad FRAPS free only runs for 30sec, the frame rate often barely stabilizes before it cuts out again. And it uses too much resources when CPU and GPU already share the same memory bandwidth.
baiii: There is a simple commercial video editor that uses AMD's APP. It can detect dGPU but can not use it...also the system seems faster when using CPU but that may be an issue with certain codecs settings because this is not always the case...
I could hope Trinity can do hardware decode for Hi10 but it seems unlikely? Really want tiny HTPC box with A4 or similar and small SSD. Mostly because the quality of Intel decoder can't compete with Radeon, and a dGPU makes everything bigger and hotter. -
Just ran through Skyrim intro from where you start on the cart to the beheading, settings medium 1280x720, no AA and it ran about 35fps pretty steady, ranging from 30-50.
Recording with FRAPS unfortunately takes away any indication of FPS performance because it locks in the FPS and also sucks too many resources to give a true indication. I can record without audio, but what's the fun in that? -
I built one.
Antec ISK 100
ASUS F1A75-I Deluxe
A4-3300
OCZ Vertex 2 60GB SSD
Hitachi 500GB Notebook drive
2x2GB 10600 DDR3
Windows 7 Ultimate
Wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse combo
Works like a charm! -
I am not a video editor, I just have alot of 1080i stuff to play with fancy render and filters.
-
Dammit clarkkent, that's cool!
baiii: It sucks that Hi10 doesn't have hardware support, because some of the stuff in 1080p requires a desktop-speed A6 or A8. My overclock BARELY managed playing Iblard Jikan bluray rip, stock speed was hopelessly overmatched. Most will run perfect at stock speed though, and live action is still mostly 8-bit because the huge improvements only apply to CG and cell animation....four cores maxed though, it made me sad. What kinda shaders do you like?
Also thinking about something else. Trinity uses Piledriver, which should be an update on Bulldozer. Bulldozer includes SSE4.2, partial AVX including AES acceleration, and Fixed-Add-Multiply (4 variables). Piledriver should have all of those functions plus more complete AVX, 3-variable FAMP and a couple new AMD-only instructions. Trinity graphics are a small update but possibly include a dedicated encoder. 2 Piledrivers should be sometimes faster than 4 Stars, and sometimes slower. However if you use an AES encrypted operating system, Piledriver should be like 10x faster for disk I/O etc. Any other case using basic AES or hashes will also be faster too, so maybe thin client middleware and antivirus software can benefit. -
Hell I've been running an AMD HTPC for years, using a Shuttle system. Usually would take my old Shuttle and turn it into an HTPC. However, it sucks a lot of power and am considering an A4 type HTPC instead. Probably make up for it in energy costs in the first year alone!
-
I THINK Trinity is moving from "5D" to "4D" for it's GPU part? If so, that's at least somewhat more efficient (let alone if they end up including more cores or higher clocks).
I have been wondering about the whole sort of 4, sort of 2 cores for those things though, as compared to 4 real cores now. Of course moot point if the clocks are higher.
It's just on the desktop we went from 6 to 8 cores, so at best it's like 8 real cores, at worst like 4, and they're more efficient I guess, so...it's pretty much clean cut better. -
Thanks! I'll let him know! I THOUGHT this system would be perfect for his wanting to game, and price range, and really sounds like it would be.
-
I built mine because I travel a lot, and wanted to take it with me. I have had four others (cannibalized two for parts), all built with budget in mind, but also to fully take advantage of internal blu-ray, 1080p, and streaming sound. (You should see/hear my 65" and 7.1 home theater setup!)
All were Intel-based because I used leftover parts from other builds which necessitated going with Intel. Was happy to go AGP with AMD because I didn't have to buy a video card, and it all fit into this little box, which won't take an external card.
Given the scarcity of parts for socket 775, coupled with the fact that I WON'T buy a Zotac board ever again, then the natural choice was the A4 when I saw how well the A8 worked, and priced budget parts and scavenged my own stuff. I'm even using the blu-ray drive I salvaged out of this dv6. -
Nice! Yeah the A4s are very cheap and consume a fair bit less power. Will hope for a new ultramini using Trinity ULV. Trade optical drive for hinged lid with screen, trackpad, keyboard. Should be about as big and loud as a Wii or nettop, only much stronger and less expensive than Intel ULV...with bonus of better picture quality. I figure it could sell.
-
I should have mentioned that was with the IGP not the dedicated 6750m!
-
I'm playing skyrim on my lenovo E-450 based lappie with zero problems. Have shadows down low but most everything else is on medium settings. Point being, any of the A series should have little problem with this game. Btw, its a pretty remarkable game
you can really get lost in here LOL.
seer -
LOLWUT!? You serious? I can barely play with my E-350 based laptop and I know the E-450 is only 1.66GHz vs 1.60GHz and GPU is a slight bump over the E-350. I had to cut everything to absolute minimum and run at 800x480 to make it even playable.
-
Perhaps he used one of the mods out there that improves skyrim performance...
-
If so, I'd like to know what it is.

I just bought the G.Skill for the laptop, after HT's great test, and the Samsung for the HTPC. -
Well the original release only had old fashion 2GB memory support and no compiler optimizations. So fans began patching the .exe with LAA and hand tuned code. Hence the big beta for patch 1.4, that should include a lot of these improvements officially.
Besides, I thought you could at least bump the E series CPU with K10stat?
Just checked, memory controller went from 1066 to 1600. Core went from 1.60 to 1.65/2.10 and GPU went from...400? to 500/600 or something like that. So the 450 is quite faster than 350 to begin with. -
Alright, now I know I am not hallucinating. For some reason my Win7 power profile settings keep getting screwed with or reset somehow. I had "Lid Close" set to "Hibernate" for all profiles and states, now it's back to "Sleep" again for all of them. Same with "Power Button", back from "Shut Down" to "Sleep" too!!
Various profiles are back to waiting longer before screen goes off, and all sleeping/hibernating after X minutes again!
So before I tear my hair out here...is this some big issue with Win7 or does the HP software keep forcibly wrecking my settings? -
Oh wow, nice! I'd assume the dedicated GPU should be roughly twice as good, if not better since it's got it's own RAM.
-
1. You can try this. First create a custom plan to include all your desired settings:
Custom Power Plan - Create or Delete - Windows 7 Forums
2. Then, do this to create an icon for this plan, using the custom power plan you just created:
Create a Shortcut or Hotkey to Switch Power Plans - How-To Geek
3. Then place the icon in your startup folder:
C:\Users\YourUserNameHere\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
About two weeks ago, I used this method to solve a really nasty power-plan-switching problem at work for our enterprise which was causing connection loss to our database every time the computer went to sleep. We don't have the option to locally create group policies, but I have found that upon startup, this is the final word, so it works as well if not better. -
TESV Acceleration Layer at Skyrim Nexus - Skyrim Mods and community
TESV acceleration layer is called, it's actually supposed to be very efficient with older CPUs
-
On it! Will report back although am more interested in E350 performance than DV6z since it runs fine already.
-
With the settings I posted earlier (locked 2.4 @1.0875v, dGPU 770/950) I play Skyrim at ultra settings with default res, 1366x768. Dont know what my fps is, but it looks beautiful. Doesn't stutter, no artifacts. 65C temps after about 2 hours.
I hear fraps only works for 30 seconds? Is there a built in benchmark utility? I'd like to share my fps.
Decided to leave my settings alone, since only the combination of Prime95 + Afterburner hurts my machine. Regular gaming is perfect!
