Since Musho is back I will start discovering my GPU OC potential, probably this weekend. When you guys mentioned using heavy games to test stability, is Crysis 1 sufficient?

P.S. Just let you guys know that Newegg currently have the HP refurbished DV6-6135dx for $519 plus free shipping and free Belkin wireless N router.

That's actually a really good deal. As good as the asus k53ta was, I'd say.

I'm surprised that Newegg has this many refurbished DV6s, I guess it's because 6135dx is a Bestbuy specific model, and there are lots of people returning them because the touchpad light got accidentally turned off and they don't know the fn+space trick to turn it back on. I have absolutely no problem buying a refurb, mainly because every single refurb was inspected before being allowed to return to retail channel, while only certain percentage of new ones are inspected.

It should appear in "Start>all programs>startup"

A search in windows explorer at partition - usually C: - you have windows installed also should show it.

Well guys... I started playing Skyrim this morning and it runs surprisingly well.

Playing on High preset with 2X AA and no AF, I get 30-45 fps outdoors (lowest dip was 25 during opening) and 40-60fps indoors.

Seeing as the consoles run the game at 30fps, I don't really care about getting 60fps 24/7.. it seems plenty smooth at 30.

    cpu @ 2.86ghz, gpu @ 800/1000

Oh and an important note I forgot, I am running at 1366X768 since I don't have a 1080p screen, so that might make a decent difference.

Yeah that would most certainly help :) A list of GPU core and memory speeds would be great. Should be able to start modding tomorrow. A direct link to the latest bios would also come in handy! Thanks :)

Try using FXAA instead of the regular AA. Got got a huge performance boost from using it.

OK, everyone, you heard the man, post your requested GPU and GPU RAM clock speeds and I'll compile and send to Musho...

I'll also try to dig back through this forum and put those in the list, but please post again if you can, just to make sure we have everything. I'll post the list here later when I get it together to double check.

Here's the post by Musho that had the list of Bios F20's with modified GPU clocks:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...xxx-series-owners-lounge-265.html#post7892942

One more was after it, but here's all the requested clock speeds so far:

    720 / 900
    750 / 850
    770 / 840
    770 / 950
    770 / 970
    780 / 880
    800 / 950
    800 / 1000

    BIOS: F.21
HP BIOS Download Page: HP Notebook System BIOS Update (AMD Processors) HP Pavilion dv6z-6100 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

I think this list is a good start and users can find something in there that works for them. But since Musho is willing to do it, we can at least have these. Feel free to request additional, but let's try to keep the list as small as possible.

    Will add! :D

Yeah I'm almost tempted to buy that recertified laptop too. I've been hacking mine up so much, it would probably be cheaper to buy that for replacement parts than ordering online, lol. But alas I'll just make due until Trinity.

    BTW! Happy Veterans Day Seer!

edit: I sent the list of clocks to Musho and told him I would guinea pig the change with my clocks (780/880). Will let you know how it goes.

I just compared mine with a Lenovo Z570 and the Lenovo's screen color seems to be way more accurate, I just realized that my DV6's screen color has been off. What's the best way to calibrate color on this machine?

Find a test pattern and eyeball it. Just adjust the hue in the display color section of the CCC or whatever it's called now. The LED's used to light the screen tend to be blue'ish so move the slider in the red direction. Increasing the saturation slightly helps as well.

I'm also starting to believe I got the perfect A8-3500M. I've been busy undervolting and I've arrived at a point I never thought would be stable enough to run prime95 for 5min, let alone 5 hours so far. 1.9GHz at 0.95V!

    CPU-Z Validator 3.1

I'm curious to see where the stock 1.05V will get me. If it'll do 2.2GHz just fine on that, I might step down from 2.4 just for the additional thermal headroom for the GPU.

Hey guys. I don't want to be a bother but I have some questions.

I bought the laptop that was on newegg and i'm hoping to OC it. I bought the one with the a8-3500m. I am not completely inexperienced with overclocking, but when it comes to a laptop i'm clueless. What temperatures should I watch out for on the laptop? And I can't seem to find any sort of guide on using this k10stat that everyone is mentioning.

Also if I get the 2 year warranty is it a bad idea to OC?

Don't worry too much about the temperatures, most of us have overclocked our processors around 2.2 Ghz with not to much problem, but of course always undervolting. Here is a list of my voltages and frequencies but this is for a A6 3410MX, it may give you an idea:

    freq FID DID V
    3100 15 0 1.2500
    2900 13 0 1.2250
    2733 25 1 1.1875
    2600 23 1 1.1250
    2300 30 2 1.0375
    2200 28 2 1
    1800 20 2 0.9625
    1600 16 2 0.9125
    1400 26 3 0.8625
    1300 23 3 0.8125
    1200 20 3 0.7500
    800 16 4 0.6750

Normally the processor protects itself when it passes 82 degrees adding idle cycles and reducing temp, however at frequencies around 2.9 Ghz it doesn't go down below 95 degrees, I use those frequencies in emulators like DesMume, this requires high speed but low processing power hence temps stay around 80 degrees no problem. AMD stated... or I remember to have seen a PDF were this processors work around 100 degrees, but of course we don't want to reach this limit, try that your temps don't go for extended periods of time with more than 90 degrees, below of that is safe.

From my testing I see that the bus and memory spped is most stable when using if DID=1
Other dividers appear to give mixed results with loss of bus and memory speed that is intermittent, if monitored with the likes of hwinfo or adia that will show you your true clock speed.
Using DID=1, you will be able to select almosy any speed from 1066 up to your processors phyisical limitation.

I've just done some test regarding this and my results were kinda different, in fact I saw no clock speed loss in neither memory or bus, using the suggested program hwinfo.

What I did saw is that the throttling in the processors actually starts at 94 degrees and one can see how the processor clocks dance in the four cores in an asynchronous way. I used prime 95 torture test and with DID=1 or 0 both results were exactly the same.

This is quite important because this processor with a nice mod can reach up to 4 GHz... but only if using DID=0, which seems quite stable for me.

0.0 Isn't that a bit high? I'm looking for something that won't leave me worrying about temps at all but will give me a decent performance boost. Maybe I don't know what i'm talking about. Anyways then should I just go for around 2.2 as p0? And does that then leave b0 at default? I don't really want temperatures going much over 80 under load.

    Maybe i'm speaking gibberish. :\ being a n00b

It is high, however I don't use those values for constant computing and gamming, the highest ones are only for emulation, normally I have a profile with b0 as 2.6 ghz and 2.2 as maximum state.

    Works great.

2.2 to 2.4 is realistic. Anything higher and you're likely to crank the temps up very quickly.

Hello everyone! Thanks to HTWingNut's compiled list of desired clock speeds I've been able to create custom bioses for everyone :) HTWingNut's version has already been tested and confirmed working, so I'm quite certain the other bioses will work just fine, but I would still like to point out that flashing your bios with one of my modified versions will be at your own risk!

To flash a custom bios, download the version you want, unzip the contents of the zip file and run the InsydeFlash.exe file. Please run your CPU at stock speeds when flashing your bios. No matter how stable your overclock is, flashing a bios chip is best done at stock speeds!

    Here are the download links:
    F21 Modded Bios List

I'm glad I helped you guys and I hope you will all enjoy your laptops. Let me know if there are any questions or additional requests! :)

    Enjoy!

I really thank you for this bios, even my temps from my discrete card have come back, last time they disappeared :D but now it's working wonders.

Also I already have donated, I wanted to do it more but it seems that my balance was around 2 bucks (well... more like 28 mexican pesos) and I don't own a credit card (so I have to ask another person to put money there for me), still really really thank you.

I have a DV6-6135dx with A8-3500M and 6620/6750M GPU. Ive never overclocked before but will these Bioses work with my system? Are they specific to one model? Also, should I start with the lowest clocks and work my way up?

Thanks for all the help in advance!

    EDIT:

What I meant was I've never overclocked the GPU before....Ive OC'ed the CPU to 2.4 using K10Stat but I have no idea how to work on the GPU.....

They will probably work BUT it is better to check yourself up to what limit can your GPU core and mem clocks reach. This is done with the 11.3 catalyst drivers (because they allow overclock with the MSI Afterburner utility) a few pages back in this same treat there is another person explaining how to use it.

Once you got your clocks then you may try the bioses supplied by Musho, the reason for them to be a lot is because not everyone can reach the same clocks as others, for example the maximum that I have seen here is 800 core 1000 memory, i can reach 770 core and 970 memory without problems, and there are others with lower clocks because sometimes the card displayed artifacts or simply crashed the display driver.

At the end you have to try :D

    Donated! Thanks Musho.

Also, start with the stock HP drivers (11.6 actually) here:

AMD High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver HP Pavilion dv6z-6100 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Use MSI Afterburner (do a little research on how to use it) to overclock. Do GPU first, then GPU RAM in ~ 10MHz increments.

Then test with MSI Kombustor for 10 minutes each clock. Eventually your system will lock up or reboot or show artifacts (usually with high RAM overclocks). Just shut down if it freezes (or let it reboot) and start up again, and set your clocks about 10MHz lower than what made it crash. Test for 30 minutes MSI Kombustor and you should be in good shape. I wouldn't lock in a specific clocked BIOS until you've played some games though to ensure stability.

    That's about the quick guide.

Once you find something that works, then see if one of the listed clocks works for you, or put in a request for updated clock BIOS modification.

I keep meaning to do a detailed guide, but thought by this point everyone had it worked out.

Only the old DV6-series had a backlight keyboard (my old DV6-3050sg had one). When I opened up the laptop some months ago, there also was no connector for the backlight on the mainboard, so easy upgrade isn´t possible...

As far as I know, none of the current generation (Llano) based US DV6z have backlit keyboard option. We only have the backlit touchpad :).

Kind of an odd problem, But with the newest 11.10 drivers and running the CAP 4 application profile Space Marine doesn't work at all under high performance. I can hear the sound and sometimes I get a mouse pointer but no picture at all. But when I switch to power saving mode in switchable graphics so using the 6620G it works. BF3 works fine and so do all my other games while running crossfire. Wondering if anyone else has seen this problem or would have some suggestions for a fix. I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers but same problem. Older drivers like the original 10.6 work with space marine in crossfire.

Thanks Musho for updating current bios.

For some reason Im having problem with 3dmark 06, vantage, and 11. Every time I lunch a benchmark, it will work fine for the first bench test, but after completing a first test the laptop would go to sleep and then back on after about 30sec. Its like overheating or something, but GPU temp stays below 66c and so is the CPU temp max 82c. Does anyone else having this problem?
I have already try old bios, and different AMD drivers, but still having this issue.

    edit: for dv6-6135dx

Have the same problem with exiting BF3, just goes to sleep until it cools down I guess. My temps are around 80c when this happens
