Problem solved, can't believe that simple thing stuck me 2 days...thanks for the tip on CPU throttling even that is not the true cause. The thing was I have 2 HP laptop (elite book) so I have about 3 power supply at home. They have the same connector so I just plug randomly into one of them. However, the elite book is a quite low power laptop with Intel CPU/SSD and integrated GPU. The output is about half of the Llano laptop. I found the GPU always working in the lowest frequency even the task is high so I suspect the power supply wasn't enough...boom...problem solved in 2 secs after using the cord in box. I guess I can still use the other cords as long as not playing games.

Hey yall I picked up a dv6-6117dx from Best Buy as a beater laptop for SWTOR lol. Anyway did a clean install with SSD drive and drivers I can't seem to figure out is 2x USB controllers on the left side next to the ethernet port. The manual shows these are the 3.0 ports. I've installed the 3.0 drivers on the HP site but that's all there is available for USB. Flash drive or mouse don't work when I plug it into either slot but it does have power for a notebook cooler. Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Make the Recovery DVD's then use them to do a "Minimal Recovery Install". I had an issue with drivers and such on my SSD until I did this.

    Hi all
Im following this thread now 2 months, and all the reply's helped me alot!

    @HTWingNut
I wanted to ask, how u managed it to play Bf3 with cf?
    I run my A6 system
    @2,2Ghz-1,025Vcore
    @770/950Mhz - Biosmod
    temps: ~86°C :( bf3 uses the gpu+cpu both around 90%

I tested cf and dGPU in a single player match in bf3 and got around:
    Normal/high settings @1366x768, vsync off
    dGPU: 31-37fps
CF: ~39-45 (and few fps jumps to 24fps)
it was kinda playable if the cf frame jumps wouldnt appear...
    i used 11.10 driver + cap 4
i dont know if these are the exact numbers, cause the test is now few days ago, and i try to remind the numbers and used drivers but im not really sure.
Now i tried it yesterday in a MP match(same clocks, just 11.11 + CAP 11.11 2, @1920x1080 22"monitor, low settings)... and it was unplayable.

Now i want to make a fresh install, and it would be nice if u could give me as many details as possible to get a working cf for bf3 (driver, any tweaks or smt like that).

    Thanks.

On your original HDD, when you boot into windows, there's a link in the HP folder to DVD recovery disks or something or other. It will take a while, but good to have.

just a note regarding gaming temps when you're overclocked. imho you should ALWAYS use a notebook cooler when gaming or otherwise really stressing your llano box. from my experience (and I have about 20 or so coolers laying round the house) I find the most effective are the aluminum or steel ones perforated with all the small holes with the movable fans that can be placed to blow directly into the inlets. I use the Cooler master with two fans and then added a third Thermaltake with its built in rheo set to blow right onto the apu. granted, when i crank it up to max it sounds like a minature jet engine, but it does the trick on those games that really stress the cpu/igpu. 20 bux well spent. oh, and tho mine has the 3530 llano, I run the top two pstates at 3000 and 2867. My gaming temps run 78C or so on the really intensive stuff, and around 72/73 on the other.
    just a suggestion

I just got that system, and yes it will be fine for D3 if is isn't much more demanding than SC2. The important thing is to add a 2nd stick of ram for dual channel. Nearly doubles the GPU up. I can do SC2 on medium shaders the rest low at 60FPS native res (early game). So Diablo 3 will play fine if you don't mind a few settings down. But for $430 you can't go wrong at all. It runs Skyrim too on low but still looks great. I got this for SWTOR...

The 6GB actually does run dual-channel iGPU, memory controller has a hardware lock of the first 256MB (total 512MB dual-channel DDR1333) of each sodimm. Guaranteed allocation, guaranteed speed, guaranteed dual channel. I still wish it reserved a full gig to match the dGPU's memory...

But your Newegg model already runs dual-channel graphics.

I also finally figured out how to properly use the AMD System Monitor. The "Rec" button generates CSV files with data on each core and both GPUs at 1s intervals, found at "C:\Program Files (x86)\AMD\System Monitor\Recordings" May need to set program to run as Admin, can't remember...still need to experiment with charting it though...it should give me what I need to confirm my settings are valid.

    No.

And more than 512MB RAM probably wouldn't help matters anyhow since its performance is meager anyhow and couldn't manage anything more than 512MB. What would be better is 512MB of dedicated GDDR5 for the iGPU. Then you would see some significant performance increase.

    Hey guys, great thread.

I ended up buying the 6135dx refurb and it has been great. I was doing some testing with the 3d mark 06 and got a score of 8310 with just overclocking my cpu. Under the score tab, it said my current (main) graphics card was the 6620m integrated card. It also mentioned my other card, the 6750m, as a secondary card but only with 32 MB of memory. Other system spec programs have shown my main card to be the 6620m as well. Am I doing something wrong and I don't have the cards setup right, or is this normal? Thanks guys! Appreciate all of the information thus far.

This is normal. You need to "prime" it by setting an app as high performance and have it running.

See my youtube vid here (watch 1080p):

edit: nevermind, you said 32MB or RAM. Not 32-bit. Not sure about that one.

I guess no one helped you yet, sorry! The chipset drivers from HP do not enable the USB 3.0 ports, believe it or not, those come with the video drivers in the catalyst install from AMD!

BTW all, I'm having a problem I've seen others here mention, maybe someone solved it. My settings in switcheable graphics aren't sticking when I click apply. It may have something to do with crossfire being enabled, I guess in that case it doesn't make a difference. My laptop is in pieces right now while I install my new screen and thermal paste.

Thanks! HT mentioned the recovery dvd's however I am too lazy to swap back in the drive to make the dvd's. I saw those drivers when I installed them on my previous drive, but did not see them on the new ssd catalyst, I did install 11.11c though. I'll try the full release b/c yeah strnge I did see usb 3.0 drivers before on the custom install haha

which catalyst has the usb drivers because 11.11 doesn't seem to have them. I forgot which package I had seen them in before.

I'm trying to figure out exactly which drivers I need to download. I downloaded the whole display adapter driver package from HP--the one with the USB drivers and everything. Now I'm trying to find the damned AMD vision drivers. AMD had me download 11-11_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl

    Is that correct?

Finally, from what I've gathered, crossfire doesn't work properly so I should just set it to use the IGFX for power-saving mode and the DGFX for high-performance mode. How do I go about that?

I finished installing the new screen and thermal paste, now things are cool and small on the screen.

I took the liberty of putting some black electrical tape over the lit logo on the inside which has ridden me on the light bleed that I saw when the screen is off typically. Maybe that tip can help others, I'm constantly seeing complaints.

my first day with this notebook dv6-6135dx....

I was kinda disappointed with this notebook after messing with k10stat because one of the core (core#3) wouldn't do 2.400 ghz unless I give it a 1.15v voltage and it was kinda toasty at 81C when i do stress testing.

After cleaning cooling system and reapplying thermall paste....

all cores are now stable at 2.4ghz at a lower voltage 1.1375v and my temps are maxing at a cool 73C.

thanks to all of you proud llano owners.

Yes, repaste is pretty much necessary. The paste they use is horrendous. It's basically a hardened pad of paste, not a great heat conductor nor work well for ensuring proper spread of paste across the surface of the CPU or GPU die.

Ugh, Bios bricked. After I installed the 750-850 mod bios the second time I kept my HP_TOOLS partition renamed. When I was running 3dmark 11 the computer crashed and then wouldn't boot, my caps lock just keep blinking when I try to turn it on. So unfortunately my HP_TOOLS isn't recognized on the hard drive and can't do the bios recovery. After some research I found out you can do it from a usb drive by installing the UEFI bios update on it. I finally got it to boot from the usb but when the screen comes on it says "The Bios Recovery Has Failed". I'm assuming it is failing because my "Hewlett-Packard" folder isn't organized correctly because when you install it on the usb all the folders are empty. If anyone has time, can they copy that folder and send it to me or just tell me how the HP_TOOLS partition is set up via screen shots. Any help would be appreciated, I really want to get this brick unbricked.

Remove the CMOS battery from your motherboard (accessible from the service panel) and wait a couple seconds. That's how I fixed my caps lock flashing problem.

Hey everyone, I bought this laptop and I am wondering if someone can help me figure out what k10stats I should use. I am ok with using computers, but I can't grasp what voltages I should use and FID or DID, ect. I just want to bring it up to 2.4 from the 1.8 and keep it stable. Just a moderate overclock.

    I would appreciate the help!

So I just bought one of these (a factory-refurbished dv6-6135DX). It's a Christmas present to myself so I won't be getting it for a few weeks but I'm trying to figure out what tweaking I should do with it when I get it. I'm also planning on getting a laptop cooler since I will mainly be using this like a desktop. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Here is my current plan for when I get the laptop (please feel free to chime in with suggestions!):

    - After verifying that everything boots OK I'm planning to re-paste the CPU, GPU and north bridge. I found a kit of Arctic Silver 5 with paste remover and surface purifier for $11.35 shipped.
    - Bloatware removal. I'm still looking around but I'm hoping to just wipe the HDD and put a vLite'd Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit in it's place.
    - Find a stable overclock. I haven't overclocked a PC before so I'll probably just try to find a K10STAT preset here and see if that is stable.

    Future (hopefully with 2-3 months):
    - Crucial M4

I'm most likely getting one of these, and my budget is $800.

$520 + $15 shipping for laptop, refurb on Newegg

    $535

    $130 for AUO 1080p 95% Gamut Screen

    $665

Now, I want to remove the Blu-Ray drive and put in an SSD.

    $15 for caddy.

    $680

Now this gives me a $120 budget for an SSD. I only need 60-64GB for the Windows install and maybe programs I use the most. So, what suggestions for SSD's? I'd like to grab one for around $100 because there is an 8GB kit of RAM I want to get too, bringing me to ~$800. Thoughts?

@PopSmith - I recommend IC Diamond thermal paste over AS5 only because it's not electrically conductive, and does a little better job cooling. I just buy a bottle of 95%+ rubbing alcohol at the drug store (99% is best, but even 90%+ is ok) to remove the goop.

I also would also use the K10stat configs for reference, but definitely test them yourself. Nothing worse than having your system lockup at an inopportune time.

Before you wipe the HDD, back up the SWSetup folder to an external drive, then make the recovery DVD's. Then use the recovery DVD's to make a "Minimal Install Recovery" or something like that. You will thank me. I usually prefer a fresh install doing everything myself all the time, but with HP, their drivers and apps can be tricky, and the minimal recovery basically installs required drivers and apps.

@KevmanW4301 - Crucial, Samsung, or Intel are all fair bets.

Hey everyone, I just got the dv6-6117dx from Bestbuy. What do I do to get the best performance out of this machine? Clean install or just remove bloatware? I'll overclock too.

I'm more leaning towards doing a clean install, because I want to partition my HDD. If there's a way of partition the C: drive without a clean install let me know.

    @Jokerface:

You can do a Minimal System Recovery:

After pressing the power button (while turning on the notebook), press Esc key to bring the pre-boot menu. Press F11 for System Recovery. The System Recovery Menu will appear. There you will get option for Windows System Restore, Minimized System Recovery, Full Factory Reset, etc. Just click on Minimized System Recovery and follow the instructions.

Once it's all done, you can make your own partitions through Windows Disk Manager. Here's a link that explains how:

Thanks to everyone who posted here! Got mine form tigerdirect (499$)in perfect condition was able to overclock CPU to 2.6 from first try no crashes no bsod thanks to all the useful tips windows perfomance index jumped to 7.1 from 6.6 for cpu. 3D mark score was like 8900. All i did was use k10stat and ran some burn tests (80c' top) going to apply some thermal paste later and im using Zalman cooling pad (kinda noisy on highest speeds but does good job).

@HTWingNut, thanks for all the info. I'll be sure to bookmark your post so I have an easy-to-find reference when I get the laptop.

@kevmanw4301, newegg currently has a 64GB Crucial M4 (SATA III) for $110 with free shipping. I know that's pretty close to the maximum you want to spend so if you might want to wait a few weeks, if you can, to try and get a better deal on one.

Have any of you tried to use an Xbox 360 PC Wireless Receiver on your laptop? Mine drops connection after a while. Possibly not getting enough power? It's plugged into a USB 3.0 port.

Got k10stat working all nice and fine. I'm surprised at the low voltages I was able to achieve. I know I could OC even more but based on Abaddon's and others' posts, 2200 seems to be the sweet spot for performance/cooling. I prioritize stable and cool usage over the maximum performance so it works great for me.

Kevmanw4301: If you still have the DV7t mentioned in your sig, I would appreciate if you compare it against the DV6z after you've gotten into it. There are some ifs and buts involved, but I keep hearing the A8 combined with 6750M can meet-or-beat an i5 + 6770M after tweaking. And especially at the same - or better - temperature.

    Oh, I know the A8+6750M beats the i5 + 6770M in DX10/11 games. you guys get 2000+ on 3DMark11, I get around 1650 overclocked. I think my 3DMark 06 score kills the Dv6z, though, as I get around 12k.

I know Seer mentioned 11K+ on '06, but I know his 6750M didn't overclock as far as some of the others like HT? And yes a couple folks have managed 2K+ in '11. But how are your temps? Because it seems like 75-85C is where most z users are landing, depending what they view as "safe".

With just the folding plastic stand from Targus, I couldn't break 72C at stock settings. Having played with voltage and clocks, I get 76-77C. Still need to decide if I'm locking in a modded BIOS so I can update drivers, or skipping the graphics overclock for now. I *think* at 6770M speeds it was up to 81C total and I haven't so much as popped off the lower service panel yet.

3DMark06 is CPU dependent. Faster CPU will crank up the 3DMark06 score. Vantage and 11 are more GPU dependent.
