Thanks for the speedy answer, calc.

I'm hearing mixed things about the 11c drivers; should I install them over whichever ones I have now, or do a fresh one? Seems to have mixed results for people

    My Mod:

The purpose of this mod is to do the less damage possible to the laptop while archiving better cooling, hence better performance... this is also my first mod and I quite enjoyed it :D

First it comes the preparation of the cooler, in this case a VGA one, the Scythe SCVSG-2000. Please note that the mecano pieces prove to be fundamental for this mod...

Next comes the holes into the laptop bottom, that was the only modification done to this laptop, as seen on the picture an square needed to be made in order for the cooler base to be able to go through, also two holes for attaching a mecano piece, allowing for increased resistance... I just couldn't trust the plastic of the laptop, although is quite resistant.

Another view from the laptop bottom.

I needed to remove the I-don't-know-for-what black paint of the pipes, by using both a water sandpaper and acetone. The end result as well as part of the mother board (already repasted with artic silver 5) is shown next:

Top view of the already assembled cooler with the bottom.

I needed to put a green plastic thing to cover the other things since I could not put back the original plastic protecting the components... (Well I could, but... I'll explain later, Also I really didn't care too much for the quality of it, I was already very tired...)

Yes... the laptop can close :D

    Laptop geöffnet

Of course power is needed to ... power the fan of the cooler, a very nice 7812 does the job nicely.

    The end result

    Notes:

I wanted to overclock the laptop even more, I've reached very easy 2.8 GHz and 3.0 GHz Turbo before... and also reached throttling and temps of 95° very easy, which... pretty much makes the overclock non functional. With this mod I had the hopes of lowering quite a lot the temps, however the temps with the fan at max speed reached 84 degrees constant, no throttling using prime 95... which quite lowered my hopes, sure I can go up but I see no much sense in it since surely I'm going into high temps again.

I originally tried to remove the heatpipe of the CPU... which proved to be useless unless I wanted to damage the whole heat sink, so at the end I decided to cool over the pipes, which I'm pretty sure rests a lot of the cooler performance.

The reason because I removed the black plastic cover covering the harddrive and memory was because I had hopes of somehow... be able to remove the laptop bios battery in case of a failed overclock, because if the overclock fails, the laptop doesn't start flashing the typical block mayus LED until the battery is removed. So far I haven't done overclock beyond of what I already had done, so... no purpose on it.

The cooler by itself is not the most efficient thing out there but oh well, it lowered the temps and stays constant, that's something.

Actually there is a reason because the cooler is exactly positioned like that and that is... that the flow of air hits the GPU just below of it, also cooling it.

I must say... I quite acquired a lot of experience here and... I'm expecting for my next AMD Fusion laptop indeed :D. I take the opportunity to thank Musho since he did some incredible modded bioses, please donate him if you can and you use one of them.

P.D: Any ideas for the base? I mean... those two carton pieces of the cooler's box... well, not precisely efficient, lol.

    P.D. 2: 3DMark score http://3dmark.com/3dm11/2304498, test made running at 770 core 970 mem, Catalyst 11.11c

Vect... That mod is AMAZING. Did I read that right, 4GHz?! Can you run some benches like 3DMark to see what scores your getting? One benchmark I think would be awesome to see, as well, is Cinebach 11.5.

Hi this is my and first post here and I need some help please.
I am trying to overclock my dv6-6135dx to get to 2.3 ghz to play skyrim with good FPS, but it's not working.
I tried quite a few k10stat settings from alot of users here and every single time I am done and check my PC speed on CPU Speed Professional it just says 1497MHZ
I even tried to see if skyrim would run better, and all I got was about 17-20 FPS on high and medium.
Also about 30 pages back somebody said that they had it running on high with 30-40 FPS.
So if somebody could help me by giving me there k10stat settings, or telling me my problem I'd really appreciate it.
Oh by the way, I have a AMD A8-3500m processor and a amd 6750m graphics card with dual graphics.
    So thanks for any help!

It's 2.8GHz. But that is an EXTREME mod! Congrats. Assuming you don't need the portability then?

Make sure coolsense is set to "performance" otherwise it will downclock the CPU even with little stress on it.

Plus you need to tune the profile yourself. Every CPU and machine is a little different and what works for one won't work for another. Use HWInfo64 to monitor CPU speed, it gives a real-time graph of the performance of each of your CPU cores.

Install over existing drivers. You can uninstall ONLY the video drivers, but if you remove the full package you will delete the switchable graphics functions, and things won't work right. Just run the 11.11c drivers installation without doing anything else for easiest and best result.

    quick question

After doing the minimal recovery, I've noticed there's HP Tools (20mb) and a systems partition (200mb). What do these actually do? Can I remove it and be ok?

Has anyone tried dual booting with XP? If so, how has that experience been?

    Thanks in Advance

After toying with mine for a week, i would like to share some of my experience:

    1. GPU
-Priming it is pain in the @ss, if you forgot to prime it before Afterburner , you will crash the card (black screen in kombustor or game) and need to reboot.
    - Stable in kombustor + prime 95 does not necessary mean stability in RL usage.been crashing after hour of double burn of "stable clock"

    2. CPU
    - Same thing with undervolting, even if it is staple when u lock the P-sate, it go crazy when u let it cloak control and voltage flow around.
    - Power profile have serious impact on clock control, and it override the K10 sometimes.
High performance : auto lock the cpu to the P0 for me
Balanced : Clock will go up and down like K10 control
Power Saver: It will lock the CPU to P6
I try play with % in power profile but they dont seem to matter, probably need to edit registry.

    Crappy/Annoying feature of the laptop:
    - the HP logo light is the worst design ever, it burn(yellowish/orangeish dot when lcd is off) and press the LCD on some machine. If you try to listen music @ night and close the screen, the light is BRIGHT.
    - mine dv6z from newegg, the keyboard is not mount right and flex in middle function key area.
    - Yes ,the speaker is crap , but give above average sound if you use headphone.(2 audio jack is nice as well)
    - The build itself is good though

Order a replacement from newegg cause priming just get annoying, hope to gamble a better GPU :p (stable with 720/900 bios ,740/900 afterburner, but add to the crap keyboard, i just decide to make a gamble).
If the GPU is like 800/1000 stable , would had open up the thing and fix everything my self LOL.
Personally i will open up the thing and unplug the logo light.

Vect, your dv6z will cook if you turn off crossfire and burn the gpu and @ same time LOL

Crossfire seem to throttle your CPU if you burn your 6750m 2 hard

I don't think there are appropriate drivers for XP. Maybe try running in a virtual machine.

I would not delete the HP Tools or system partition. HP Tools you probably could, but then can never recover from a bad bios flash or other issues.

Hey all, I got an HP from BB during black friday weekend with the AMD A8-3500m. I just ordered 2x4GB 1600Mhz RAM only to find out that this processor doesn't support it.

Will the RAM even work or should I cancel my order and just buy another 4GB 1333Mhz for $15 less?

I was just looking for some advice on a Refurbished DV6-6135DX I purchased from newegg over the Thanksgiving weekend. I have a few of problems with it and I want to know if I should just send it back or I’m missing some critical install or something.

    Problems:
    1. 3DMark benchmarks will cause the laptop to go to sleep/hibernate if the system is relatively warm when it starts. It will always happen in between one of the Graphics tests as it tries to load the next test. When I log back in, the error is a direct 3D error about not being able to find/get the graphics device. If I run the benchmark right away after a long cooldown period, it will successfully complete.
    2. 2 of the 4 times I’ve tried doing a minimal System Restore from the HD partition, it fails right at the very end. The recovery CDs now state as well that they are not for this computer, so they can’t be used.

    Things I’ve done/tried:
    1. Tried using latest HP video drivers as well as 11.11, 11.11a, and 11.11c AMD video drivers. They all seem to do the same thing.
    2. Installed the latest HP drivers from their website—not all the extra utilities, but just the drivers.
    3. Repasted the heatsink. It was fairly obvious that the CPU plastic guard was covering one edge of the die, but after fixing this, the system still hibernates on the benchmark although it doesn’t get as hot as fast. The plastic guard piece was property centered over the graphics chip.
    4. Flashed the bios to the F21 version.
    5. Prime95 has run for several hours without any problems at all (no hibernating even when getting in the high 80s C).
    6. MSI Kombuster also runs without problems using burn in on Direct 3D 9, 10 and 11.
    7. The HP Coolsense is set to Performance.
    8. Memtest86+ ran without problem for a couple of hours. (After I installed 2 new 4gb sticks of GSkill ram)
    9. Played Left 4 Dead 2 for a couple of hours without any issue.
    10. Installed K10Stat, but the system hibernates in the 3DMark Benchmark whether or not the CPU is overclocked.
    11. Not done any GPU overclocking.

Should I return the laptop for another one or is that 3DMark causing hibernate problem just a fluke since real games seem to work fine?

Actually portability was kept in mind:

the problem may be, indeed, the two things that are at both sides to keep the laptop elevated, the cooler by itself it's a low profile cooler... (it's heavier though...)

By the way, the mod can be easily removed if I want to do it, that was another of my primary purposes, the problem is, each time that it's put back, needs to be repasted.

BTW, with the black cover on:

Yeah but... with this mod the air flow hits directly above of the 6750m, getting 64-67 temps with combustor, that's why the whole heatsink isn't positioned at the center of the laptop :p

Alright so far HWinfo64 lists all 4 of my core speeds at about 2300mhz and then it drops all the way down to about 1000mhz.
Shouldn't it just stay at a stable 2300mhz? I'm confused.

770 core and 970 mem thanks to Musho, it runs cool enough even with normal cooling (well... sort of, below 87 degrees) with the mod runs 10 degrees more cool.

Would you mind telling me how to do this? Sorry I am new to overclocking.
EDIT: Nevermind figured it out, thanks!
Ok now my cores are listed at about 2300mhz-2400mhz, but these other programs still list my clock speed at 1497mhz.
Also I am trying to use different settings and nothing is changing with my clock speed.

Which programs are you using to monitor it?
The fact is high cpu clock doesnt really help if you are not getting any slow response from your programs( daily surfing /office w.e)

The error you describe is when the dedicated gpu shuts off (crash, freeze, bug, or the system sleeps while a test is running)

    Have you overclocked?
    Are you using a cooler?
What are your exact temps when idle, under load, and during the test? [use HW info, or hwmon etc]

Has anyone ever had to connect their Dv6 to an android samsung phone such as SGS or SGS2 for flashing (kies or odin)? I think there is something wrong with my usb drivers, as I cannot get my laptop to recognize my phone in any way. Everything worked fine on my Asus :(

the bios as in the laptop itself,

What is your reading of CPU when you run skyrim? ( Core/ Load)
Did you set high performance for skyrim in switchable graphic ?

So I jumped on the best buy HP DV6-6117DX for 429.99. I removed all bloatware, updated all drivers from HP, and installed K10stat and catalyst 11.11. I followed some tutorial on undervolting and overclocking and I got it to be stable at around 2.4 . Ran 3dmark06 and got score around 3900. Is that normal for this system? How can I improve it more? Also, in k10stat, I have trouble figuring how to set the FID and DID. For example, if given a screen shot, I can adjust the voltage easily. But how do I adjust the FID and DID for other p-stats? Finally, which modded bios should i flash? Thanks guys :(

you should not flash any of the provided bios's. They will likely brick you'r system as you do not have the same system.

The system you have does not have a dedicated gpu, and the on-board IGPU cannot be overclocked at all.

look here for what you can expect in general for gaming.
    AMD Radeon HD 6620G - Notebookcheck.net Tech

TBH, if you have trouble with running/using k10, you should really think overclocking over again.

That being said, on the p-state tab, uncheck Boost so its not being used while you find stable clocks, theres a little bubble button to the left of each P-state, click that, then change the fid/did at the top to adjust it for that level.

The idle/lowest pstate is p6, with p0 being the highest.

General rule of thumb - find p0 stable OC that you want, then drop the mghz by 400 each pstate, and the voltage by one step each p-state.

What have you done for mods/overclock so far, and what is it you are trying to achieve?

I'm really just trying to achieve about 2.3-2.4ghz so skyrim will run with better FPS.
Oh and I've been messing with k10stat to achieve what I just said.

So fid/did don't really matter. You just adjust them accordingly to achieve the OC that I want? Because on default, DID moves ascendingly. from 1 to 4

Yes, you just juggle them to get the cloak speed you want.

I think I need to spend some time writing an overclock/undervolt guide for the Llano machines. I will work on it over the next few days boys and girls.

mrzzz, thanks for your reply and information.

I have overclocked the CPU a bit, but this behavior of crashing during the benchmark happens even if I don't start K10 stat and let the CPU run at stock speeds. I've not overclocked the GPU at all, nor flashed a custom bios.

I am using a laptop cooler (a cool master one with 3 fans).

I don't remember the exact temps off hand, but the GPU was maxed around 73 C during the benchmark (HWInfo64 says that's the max temp for the run after I bring it back out of sleep/hibernate). At idle the dedicated GPU seems to turn off and no longer report temps. The weird thing to me is that the GPU's temperature gets closer to 80 C while running other software that puts it under load (such as MSI Kombustor, or when I played left 4 dead 2 a bit), and it doesn't hibernate then. I'm just not sure why the 3DMark06 test is the only thing that causes it to hibernate when it's hot.

Runs great for me @ 2733Mhz CPU and 770/950 GPU:
1366x768 resolution, everything on high (shadows)/very high with 4x Adaptive MS AA and 8xAF... 20-40 FPS
