Speaking of it, is there another laptops with this exact combination of llano processors and 6750m or 6770m? I mean, from another brands?

made a short test and i get ~27 fps on high settings, and ultra texture quality

    1366x768
    cpu@2200
    gpu@780/880

played few games, and no lag or getting choppy

    edit:
    i made a more detailed test: same resolution/texture quality/clocks:
xel'nagha: just made a custom game, and created ~400zerglings, its not the best test, because if the zerglings move, while im looking at an other area i get a ~10fps drop.

    - extreme:
    44fps - base view, few units/buildings
    25fps - looking at ~400zerglings
    18fps - moving ~400 zerglings (unmarked)
    13fps - moving ~400 zerglings (marked)

    - ultra:
    44
    25
    20
    13

    - high:
    48
    36
    24

    - medium:

    @Vect
so far i know, is hp the only one with this compination.
asus/lenovo have a liano product too, but with a weaker dgpu (6650m)

The CPU side of the 6135DX does seem to lag behind by a decent amount even with the massive overclock compared to an i5 or higher on number crunching. On graphics, it murders Intel Sandy Bridge. Its really the CPU that is bottlenecking the Llano chips the most even with the crazy amount of potential left untapped. 2.4GHz on AMD doesn't equal the performance of 2.4GHz Intel yet on heavy single threaded applications by more then a small margin. I love love love this thing, but it fits my planned usage of a super HTPC and portable PC. Of course, the large desktop absolutely crushes it.

The llano laptops are a great deal on a budget, but they definitely are not an end all and it sounds like he could use the extra performance. The i7 DV7t I recommended to my friend would be much better for heavy duty productivity and gaming (discrete graphics too), I've seen several deals for it under $900 in the last year. Extra hard drive bay for HD editing, 6770 discrete, large HD screen, BD-Rom, quieter, cooler, etc. That is what I would have gone for if I wanted a desktop replacement.

Its not so much the processing power and the lack of use of the discrete GPU for openGL. I would say dv6 i5 or i7 with 6770 would be more in line with that person's use because they dont have to worry with switching graphics which can be a pain.

I hope so too, It would be great for AMD to have some sort of solid market share. 50% would be ideal, but none the less any solid competition will only benefit consumers.

Number crunching != model and photoshop. Come on guy... I do work using both photshop, solidworks and catia and I feel this machine quite powerful*. But alright, intel will always win on Super Pi.

    *For a laptop that is.

Hey guys what is the proper method for reapplying thermal paste. I've always done credit card method but I beleive I might have made it worst- I clocked at 2.4 and while running prime and kombuster on igpu I hit almost 90c after an hour or so. Should I leave it be since its working fine or what? I don't mind opening again as I'm going to paint it. I'm also thinking about removing the spring on the screws for the heat sink and replacing with washers for the right amount of pressure for better contact between gpu and heatsink.

Hi guys, I have been reading and saw that a few of you took you laptops apart and applied new thermal paste on the cpu. Is there anywhere where I can see step by step on how to take this laptop apart and do this? How hard is it? I have an hp DV6 315dx.

And also is it possible to buy a new screen for this laptop? The 1366x768 screen it came has a really bad picture when viewed at slight angles. I've been interested in buying a 1080p screen and replacing the current one. How much would an upgrade like that cost?

And lastly is it possible to upgrade this keyboard for one with back-lit keys? It's really hard to see the keys when there isn't much light.

Thanks for any help you guys give. I've been keeping up with this thread for a while and been learning a lot :)

well, depending on whether the *search* function works for you on this thread, all of these have been covered. :) First, on the hp site you can download the service manual which shows you how to disassemble the laptop step by step. Second, yes, their is a drop in 1080p replacement screen available, but you also need to get a new connector cable., that has been detailed also.
Third, unfortunately far as i know, no backlit keyboard found yet that will plug into our boxes. Too bad too, as frankly, its the only mod I'd appreciate on mine. :)

Now if your search function is NOT working,, try looking at WingNut's posts (yeah i know, there are hundreds of them in this thread...BUT, he has pretty much covered or referred to everything we've managed to do with these DZ's :)
    good luck :)

First time poster, short time lurker here. Recently bought the dv6-6135dx for $499 from TigerDirect (newegg was sold out). Thanks to the guys here, I've oc'd with k10stat to:

    B0: 26/1/1.1625 2800
    P0: 20/1/1.1125 2400
    P1: 20/2/1.0000 1800
    P2: 16/2/0.9500 1600
    P3: 26/3/0.9125 1400
    P4: 20/3/0.8875 1200
    P5: 14/3/0.8375 1000
    P6: 16/4/0.8125 800

My idle temps run at 35-37C. After playing Civ 5 for several hours, my temps are between 77-79C. Haven't had any problems yet. I'm also on the F21 bios, 11.11c and CAP2 drivers, but stock ATI clocks. Don't really want a modded bios. Haven't run any benchies, but ran prime95 for a few hours with no errors.

Now, I am interested in the 1080 screen upgrade. Can find them online for about $75 with minimal searching. However, I'm seeing several different part numbers, and not sure which is the matte 1080. 654103-001 is what WingNut has said, and the manual says this on page 103, but the manual also says 653378-001 is the anti-glare 1080 on page 108. Both part numbers bring up identical descriptions on sites that sell laptop panels, so I'm a little confused as to which one is the right one. Matte, not glossy.

As to the thermal paste, the manual says that the video and northbridge use a thermal "pad" whereas the cpu uses thermal paste. When replacing the paste with some arctic silver 5 (for example), do you put that on all three? Or do you reuse the pads?

Tried searching, but either get no results, or far too many irrelevant to look through. Be really nice if this info was linked in the first post! Anyway, I'll keep on the search, but feel free to post info in reply to my post. Thanks!

edit: I forgot... could you drop in the a8-3870K with the hd6550? Also, would just the processor upgrade enable ddr3 1600, or does that require something else in the motherboard?

    HTWingNut:

What thermal paste and how did you apply. I want to know exact what diamond and if they make more than one and what method did you use to apply it? IE did you just blob it or do the card spread?

Nevermind I'm an idiot! :D found your guide :D I LOVE YOU!

Yeah search is fubar in the NBR forums. I usually use google and use site:forum.notebookreview.com (search terms here)

In any case, I used IC Diamond. There's only one. There's ICD7 and ICD24 but that's just indicative of size of the tube. ICD7 is 1.5g tube, ICD24 is a 4.8g tube. I just use a blob method. After installing and removing at least a half dozen times I can affirm that the coverage is good, and temperatures great as well.

    Just a reminder :

The cable cost ~40 when the screen cost 65-80 :( .

Hopefully can find identical part on ebay someday .

In terms of the screen, this is the one everyone has been upgrading to : LP156WF1(TL)(F3) replacement Laptop LCD Screen from $69.99 Brand-new screens (never used).

The replacement LCD cable has to be either bought from the HP parts store, or online. I can only find one online retailer willing to ship international :
Alinc Technologies | 656805-001 | Display Cable Kit - ALU FHD | LCD

It really sucks because after shipping, the cable will cost just as much as the damn screen -_- . I am hoping some kind of e-bay dealer will start selling them cheaper.

Also.... a8-3870K??? Do you mean A8-3530mx?? The model you are talking about is desktop only...... the MX series of APUs supports 1600mhz ram...(at least the 3510mx and 3530mx do) but it has only shown marginal improvement in performance.

I really hope amd releases something a little faster than the 3550mx (3.0+ GHZ range)

Ok cool the only reason my did card method was because i wasnt sure if it was conductive or not when it said so on the box. I been out of the computer scene for awhile XP

Regardless; what do you think about 2.4 on the turbo reaching 90 when stress testing the IGPU aswell? its sit around 80 when prime95ed for over 30 minutes.

Yes, after I posted I realized it was the desktop part. My mistake! Thanks for the screen info. From that link, it seems as though the glossy is better. Better colors, viewing angle, etc. Are most of you guys doing the matte? I'll browse around for a cable.

    goresnet...

If you find any cable info, please forward it... :) . Think I may join you. This notebook, for me...is a keeper. Just put in a fresh Win7 install off the USB last night instead of what I did originally, which is F11, then use Acronis to clone my new SSD drive.

It feels like it's running more stable...and it's running top notch. No O/C though, I don't feel it's necessary at this point. Might keep my eye on CPU upgrades in the future instead...although, again...at this point, I think this thing rocks.

    Coming from an Intel/nVidia Fanboy...that says alot. I guess I'm a convert... :)

First AMD/ATI product I've bought in 7 years. Love it!

    Thanks for the heads up.
I was asking about the switchable problem because I noticed that the BIOS listed for the newer DV6Z quad models (dv6z-6b00) is the F.02 which is the "same" (?) for the newer DV6T quad model (dv6t-6b00). However, the date listed for the dv6z bios is 2011-09-08 whereas it is 2011-10-11 for the dv6t's F.02. The file size is also different. My friend confirmed that switchable graphic is now all good with the F.02 bios in his dv6t.
This made me wonder/hope that maybe the new DV6Z model does not have the switchabel graphics glitch anymore?

Your second point is also interesting because all the stat programs I am using have real multi threaded capability, at least to 4 cores but i.e. Stata has up to 64 cores...
Would then the A8-3530MX perform well, i.e. close enough to the I7?

Personally, I am keen to support AMD but of course not at all cost. Competition is good. It's only once in a few years when I buy laptop so that is how I can vote for/support something with my money. Anyway, thanks for the inputs.

Won't be even close to an i7 but if you OC to 2.4ghz it should be able to match an i5-2520m on heavily multithreaded programs (according to cinebench at least).

Hey All, This is my first post in the forum.

I have just ordered the HP dv6-6135dx from circuitcity. I will be getting it coming Friday. This thread helped me a lot in making my decision.
I have been reading this thread and was able to infer things like K10 Stat, APU overclocking etc.

I understand some bit of it now. The part I still don't understand is drivers problem with GPU and crossfire.

Can some one please give me a little guidance on to what should be the first few steps for this laptop (for a noob like me).
What I know from panda6517 (and changing it a bit)

    1) Upon booting up, install decrapifyer to remove all HP bull (or do a Minimized system recovery: by tmolloy )
    2) uninstall, reboot, driver sweep, reboot, and install new drivers.
    3) Install the new AMD Vision Display drivers from HP (type model # of laptop in google and you will find it) (I think this step should come after installing latest Vision drivers which are beta built 12.1 as of today)
    4) Install K10Stat and overclock. Test with Prime95 and intelburn and Kombustor
Monitor with HWinfo or any other tool of you choice.
    what comes next........

If some one can please complete or correct this list further. for eg bios updates (latest on HP site for this is F.21), driver updates and their order etc.

I am not even considering GPU overclocking but that can have a separate section in the guide.

    @HTWingNut:

I read few post back that you were writing a guide somewhat like this. Did you ever finished it writing? If so can you please share it? Thanks!

I figured out the GPU problem I was having. I've started undervolting the CPU now and I have a question before I begin to OC.

In k10stat what exactly is the DID? What exactly does it do? I understand FID is the multiplier and the definition of the DID is the p-state, but I thought the p-states were the b0,p0,p1,ect... Also is it suggest that I set the "up(ms)" and "down(ms)" to 0?

Thanks for all the help you guys have already provided!

Vect: Like Seer said, new instruction set and new memory sideport == new controller. Question is whether they've learned enough from Llano to improve consistency of the HCF mode.

abaddon: 3500m is the 35W envelope. It should have better thermals than 3510mx on average. From overclocking numbers it will do about as good as 3530mx. I mean, 2.8GHz B0 is NICE.

    LuckyX2: Already? Really? I JUST rolled 11.11c a couple days ago.... :/

I've just installed them, they do seem to work fine but this time custom application profiles can be created inside the CCC, I suppose, that's quite good news :D

Well not quite custom, but at least is an improvement.

Working through this thread helped me a lot. I also want to share my experience with tuning the dv6-6135 up to now. I own the standard Bestbuy model with A8-3500, 6 gb ram, 5200 rpm disk and 1366x768 display.

My tuning target is high cpu and gpu performance on power plug for running Eve-Online (DX9) with 2 clients. As crossfire doesn't support DX9 and the internal graphics increase the thermal load of the CPU, I was focusing on discrete graphics operation only.

In regard to OC I can run the following settings stable under prime testing or normal operation:

    800 0,663 P7
    1200 0,763 P6
    1600 0,862 P5
    2000 0,963 P4
    2300 1,038 P3
    2600 1,125 P2
    2900 1,237 P1
    3100 1,275 P0

For overclocking I work with Fusiontweaker 1.0.5 ( fusiontweaker - Tool for undervolting/clocking Lynx (Llano) platform APU's - Google Project Hosting), which is very comfortable for testing and permanent OC on Fusion

The PO status @ 3100 runs stable and without thermal throttling only on 1 or 2 cores. I only face bluescreens after hypernating or sleep mode with these settings.

What I observed, above configuration starts thermal throttling much earlier when the internal GPU also comes under load. In addition OpenGL is restricted on the internal GPU in dynamic switchable graphics mode. Unfortunately this is the only switchable mode currently supported by BIOS F.21

Then luckily I found a moded F.21 BIOS, which offers additional configuration options ( [Test, dupe, sp54724] HP Dv6-6135dx [amd]). Flashing this BIOS worked fine for me, just remember to rename the HP-TOOLS partitition.

After enabling the permanent graphic card switching in the BIOS advanced options menu, you should also find additional option for permanent switching to discrete graphics in your AMD Vision control center in the Power menu.

    Test and have fun

I am not familiar with llano architecture, but when I was burning, i feel like it is the CPU is locked down so the iGPU can work.
But maybe as previously mentioned it lock depends of changing temp rather than absolute temp? idk ~~

Edit : btw did you try to flash a normal bios over it and do the change stay?

YUP , we should make HT try the unlocked bios more.

To get the CPU overclocking permanent with Fusion Tweaker, just go to 'Service' and select 'Make custom P-settings permanent'. No BIOS flashing required, only for permanent Graphics OC.

APU master gives first priority to iGPU, with reasonable assumption the quad-core certainly cannot hold back integrated graphics. In some Crossfire scenarios it may be possible that CPU limits will hold down performance, and dGPU-only performance may be preferred in this case.

iGPU gets priority memory over CPU, and active power analysis estimates CPU power states and iGPU load to determine safety envelope. With no iGPU load there may be slightly more headroom before the system backs off.

Probably the best max power state for you is 2.6-2.8GHz, plus a modest overclock on the dedicated graphics.

Seems like you have it right for the most part.
Minimal Recovery -> install the drivers/bios you want -> setup k10stat and monitor with hwmonitor. The question however is what driver do you want. 12.1 seems to be working better than the HP drivers for me.

I'm finally getting some crossfire with 12.1!!!

    Unigine Xfire on (11.11c):
    Min:6.5
    Max:41.7
    Avg:19

    Unigine Xfire off (11.11c):
    Min:10.3
    Max:46.5
    Avg:20.2

    Unigine Xfire on (12.1):
    Min: 10.2
    Max: 66.1
    Avg: 26.2

As you can see I was getting negative scaling with crossfire on 11.11c but am now getting a solid performance boost with crossfire on 12.1

And my 3dmark11 score went from 1700 with crossfire on the HP drivers to 1950 with crossfire on 12.1

However, I ran some tests on Stalker COP and Just Cause 2 (both dx10+ games) and those still do not like crossfire.

    EDIT:
I just found the application settings page in the new 12.1 drivers. It now lets us change the dual graphics mode between disabled, default, AFR Friendly, Optimize 1x1, and Use AMD Pre-Defined Profile. This could prove very useful to us.

Anyone know what AFR Friendly and Optimize 1x1 are?

Dont worry, order dont really matter as you can reset anything you want, and your list look fine. There are always more to play with :D

    @daniel

I was referring to the perma dGPU switch graphic.

What are you guys getting for wireless connection speeds? That seems to be the one weakness I've found with my laptop. I've never seen over 150Mbps and am currently stuck at 72Mbps here at work.

Minor point of confusion here (yes, I'm FINALLY getting around to getting this thing set up.. work's been that busy)

I have to be careful about uninstalling the drivers, right? Something about not uninstalling the entire program/package, but just doing it through device managers?

But I've heard other people say they installed it on top of the old ones and were fine, so now I'm a bit confused..

I think they give it the 35W envelope because the voltages it requires to run at the highest clock speeds of the A8-3530/3510 are too high to even stay within even the 45W envelope of those two. So they lower the clock speed and voltage to fit in a 35W envelope. The majority of the 35W APU's I have seen, a few of both the A6-3400m and A8-3500m, in person do require higher voltages to run at the same clock speed as the 'MX' APU's I have seen in person. Doing it that way just makes more sense to me. It ensures that the 'MX' parts, supposedly the premium/better ones, are actually the better binned APU's.

Between advanced bios, fusion tweaker, better graphics performance, and more control over switching gpus, everything seems to be really coming together for the the Dv6Z :D

I haven't found anything of importance with advanced bios though, other than removing the whitelist for the WLAN. No way to control the fan, which is what I wanted.

Does this mean the OpenGL problem is fixed? You can choose what card is running?

I was on 11.11c, uninstalled and swept, installed 11.12, tested, unistalled 11.12, installed 12.1, tested.

You can't say directly "use the 6620g" or "use the 6750m", it's still the same old crossfire on/off and high perf/power save but now you can have individual application profiles. So if you want something to use just the 6620g perhaps then set it to power saving in the switchable graphics settings and set dual graphics to disabled in its application profile.

Thanks. Just gave it a go. Seems that the fan does kick in earlier at low speed, but doesn't kick into full speed until about 90C still, regardless of where I put the throttle point. I have it set to 50C/55C currently.

Do you have coolsense installed? Wonder if that has an effect? I can't see a way to uninstall it though as it seems to be part of the HP Support Assistant.
