Good day everyone. I really hope I am posting in the right section of the forum. So approx. 1 year and a half ago I bought an HP Pavillion-dv7 6189sl notebook. Since then, I've never be able to get somethin' good out of it. The GPU switchable-graphic system, together with HP not updating the ATI drivers, has always annoyed me the most. I tried switching to Leshcat more than once, but only thing I got most of the time was the GPU overheating, although it heats too much with the official hp drivers as well. Because the warranty was still up and running, up to this day I only format-erased with the Hp provided backup pack, the one including all that horrible HP-trash software and what-else in it. However, since 2 months ago I had to move out of my Country (Italy) to Japan. The italian warranty lasts 'till november, but it has no meaning anymore here.

So ALL IN ALL, I decided it's about time for me to format-erase my notebook properly. I downloaded a legit copy of windows 7 64X home ed., and I plan to install it and register it with the code provided with my notebook. And here comes the problem, but it may be me being a compl. noob. I remember I've read somewhere that on Hp laptops all about GPU switchable graphics and (especially) cooling system (crap automatic fan speed and what more) are controlled by bios. So... If I reinstall the Hp web-site provided bios after formatting, will I end up not being able to manually set fan speed again? If I don't, I suppose the damn switchable graphic system won't work properly.... Is there something I should be careful about when COMPLETELY (no Hp backup) format-erasing my laptop? Forgive me for my bad English and for having written so much, and thanks in advance for all the help you'll provide me

That sounds like your cooling fan has stopped working if it is getting hot? otherwise did you dust out the cooling fan and fins of any debris on them or blocking the air flow?

Uhm, I certainly think you have a point. I feel I may need to change the thermal grease. The problem is my job forces me to use the computer several hours every day. Plus the Hp laptots need to be COMPLETELY deassembled in order to reach the fan and Gpu -.- I feel a bit insecure about doing that, but I'll have to try...
