Someone asked me to take a look at a HP dv7 I think where the optical drive isn't working. When you turn the optical drive on, it lights up during post, but then doesn't work in Windows. It doesn't show up in device manger or Windows explorer. I'm going to try a Linux disc on it tomorrow to see if that works. I'm thinking it's a dead drive, but I'm not super familiar with Pavilions. I was wondering if there was anything particular to HP drives I should be looking at before I should pronounce it dead and order a new drive? Thanks for any help.

When you log on to Windows after boot up, the drive may take up to 15sec to open the tray.. This is due to a registry power save feature from Intel Rapid Storage. Try testing the drive using the HP Support Assistant and check If it works properly.

Thanks for the reply. It doesn't work at all. It doesn't show up in Windows and it will not open after it does through post.

Probably a bad optical drive. These have a very high failure rate on laptops. I've replaced a few in my time. The good news is they are relatively cheap when you buy on ebay/amazon. Very easy to swap out as well.
