I really hope someone can help me out with this. When I first got my HP DV7-1285dx with Vista (64) the remote control that came with it was working fine. I upgraded to the Windows 7 beta when it came out (I didn't do a clean install) and the remote was still working and kept working throughout the several beta upgrades I did later (to newer beta versions). However when the Windows 7 RC was released earlier this week I decided to do a clean install so I backed up the important drivers and files and did a clean Windows 7 install. After that my HP remote simply stopped working, the laptop won't respond to it at all (not in Media Center and not in anything else). I was able to reinstall all the drivers (from the backup) except for one which shows as "Unknown driver" in Device Manager, and when I do a driver update and point Windows to the folder including my backed up drivers, it does recognize the device as the "HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor" but says it encountered an error installing the driver software since it "couldn't find the file specified."

I don't know if this "Unknown driver" is in anyway connected to the Remote Control problem but I am hoping someone can help me fix them both. I have no other problems showing in device manager by the way.

Also in an unrelated matter, I am trying to reinstall the MediaSmart software the came with the laptop. I downloaded the packages from the HP website but they won't install (since they're only update packages and not standalone installers I guess) so is there any way to reinstall the MediaSmart software from the recovery discs/partition?

Remember windows 7 RC is still not a final release so there maybe a few driver issues.

However the HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor is the sensor that is connected to your hard drive; it essentially parks the hard drive read/write head in the event of a sudden fall or something bumping the notebook. It doesn't have any relation to the remote control, you will need the infrared driver for that.

Here is the direct link to HP's vista x64 drivers for your model. You should download and try the "ENE CIR Receiver Driver" and see if that resolves the issue. Remember these are vista drivers so there is no guarantee they will work with windows 7 RC. ;)

In addition to the "ENE CIR Receiver Driver" you may also need to install the QuickLaunch buttons for the included remote to function. No QuickLaunch buttons = no remote. .... At least I think this is still applies for the current models ?

Thanks for the help! I got it working by installing the CIR receiver driver from HP.
Any ideas on the MediaSmart issue?

Did you copy the SWsetup folder from the "C" partition on the default factory install? That folder contains all drivers for your notebook as well as the full installers for all software packages that came with your notebook.

Don't worry if you didn't copy it this time as it should be restored when you do a restore from the recovery DVD or factory partition but without the full baseline installer you will find that you won't be able to install most HP software as the ones on the update site are often just that, updates to the program.

I do not have the SWsetup folder now but I tried to reinstall the MediaSmart applications from it ones and it did not work. The installation would diplay an error (which I don't remember now). Isn't there anyway to install these things from the recovery discs/partition without having to do a full system recovery? I want to keep using the Windows 7 RC and would rather not go through the Vista recovery process.

I'm having similar issues, albeit I'm on a DV4. Remote worked fine thru 7 upgrades, but after a clean install of 7 RC, my remote wont work....

How did you install the ENECIR drivers? I installed those too, after downloading the ones for my device on the hp site, but the remote still wont work.

Did you have to install it manually thru the device manager or something?

I have QuickPlay and QuickLaunch installed (of course the keyboard filter is unknown as well) but I think I should have all that's required to get the remote to work...

Care to post screenshots of your device manager showing the status of the CIR driver and where I should install it (under HID, etc.)?

    Thanks :)

    I have the same problem

Did the same upgrade from vista 64 bit to Win7 RC.

I'd like to contact you to see if we can talk about the issues we encountered, how we solved them and most important... to have a sort of hm... list of users who own the same laptop model (the DV7-1285dx) and help each other out with whatever problem we might encounter regarding drivers, performance, upgrades, etc.

Feel free to contact me via email [email protected]
