HP Pavilion dv7-3079wm specifications
640GB 7200RPM HD! I didn't know they existed. Turion II Ultra M600 2.4GHz CPU, 4GB RAM, 802.11n, Blu-ray, Radeon 4650 1GB video, 1600x900 res, gigabit Ethernet... everything except Bluetooth, near as I can tell, for little more than I paid for my dv4 last year. I'll be near the local Walmart on Monday. If they're still in stock I may just have to buy one. That is one amazing deal.

I can get this new in the box from someone for $640.
Is that pretty good deal? Should I get it? -
Yes,thats's the best deal i have seen on a higher end notebook in awhile
-
Thats good to know. It seems like a good deal, but this forum doesn't seem to care much for the HP laptops. I just hope that I don't find the 17" screen to be bigger than what I wanted.
I don't do any gaming, but I will be using the HDMI output for video streaming of web content (Basketball/football games, movies, etc). I hope that the ATI is up to that, because my roomates HDMI output always has to be scaled down in resolution or it gets jittery and the audio is off from the video. Do you think that ATI will work fine? Is the video card upgradeable if need be?
I also didn't necessarily need the BluRay but it's a nice feature I guess. And the 640GB 7200rpm HDD is very nice.
How much difference is there between DDR2 memory and DDR3? And can you upgrade from DDR2 to DDR3? Or is DDR2 the most the computer can handle? Meaning if I decide to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB down the road, could I get (2) 4GB DDR3 chips?
So you know, I found it on my local craigslist from someone who got it as a Christmas gift, but doesn't need it, and needs the money to buy other gifts. -
The ATI 4650 should handle a HDMI to TV,and it has a very fast 7,200 HDD that would help too. But i dont understand why AMD's new Turion II doesnt use DDR3 ram?
Just dont expect much from battery life from this huge laptop, maybe 1-3 hours.
Walmart has a very very good deal on it,Bestbuy's similar one has a lesser gfx chip and harddrive. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pa...ssor/9556296.p?id=1218123847586&skuId=9556296 -
toddious - I wouldn't say that the folks on this forum don't care much for HP laptops. Most of the people I know and work with have HP laptops (two of them because I sold them an HP with an AMD proc at a signficant loss ...
). That said, as soon as I saw AMD processor in the spec's I was turned off. I have been burnt too many times with cr*ppy battery life (dv6t and dv4z) and bad battery life AND horribly slow (dv2 with Neo) proc's to be even remotely interested in a laptop with an AMD proc.

I can play Blu-ray video on my 1920x1200 26" monitor via HDMI on my dv4z with a mere Radeon 3200. ATI did HDMI right. So long as your HDMI cable is up to spec (I had trouble with older, pre-HDMI 1.3 ones) you'll have no problems.
DDR2 vs. DDR3: not much performance difference, nothing you'd notice, and not upgradable.
Video card is not upgradable. But the Radeon 4650 is a REALLY nice chip so this isn't much of a problem.
Reviewers have mentioned that it has two 320GB 7200RPM HDs, not a single 640GB HD. That makes much more sense. -
Is this DV-6 worth it for a midrange notebook?
M500 dual core,6GB ram,ATI HD4200,320gb 7,200rpm.
But no wireless N,however its faster than the T6600 intel with intel gfx.

Probably. The GPU is ATI's entry level but certainly better than Intel gfx. Office Depot has a similar model with 802.11n:

i got my dv7t as a desktop replacement and feel that the 17" is perfect. when i am using it, i literally feel like im on a desktop with the added feature of portability. sure it's a large laptop and heavier than others but when you're working on it, you dont feel the difference. i think with smaller units you do. i have two 12" lenovos and a tablet and you definitely notice the difference using them. i've had them for 3 years and i am still not used to them. lol.
with my dv7t, it feels like a smallER form factor desktopLOL

How are the Intel-based Dv7 for heat? I am interested in the Intel Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo Dv7s. These are in Canada, though, so I'm not sure of the differences in U.S. models.
The quality seems okay but I have to check one out in a store. These have a HD Radeon 4650, though. I understand it's a decent card.
I don't know whether to pursue a Nvidia mobile card or ATI.
I am comparing the DV7 against 16" and 17" Asus models with either P8700 or similar Quad 9000 cpu.
HP dv7-3079wm $898 at Walmart Radeon 4650 and Blu-ray!
