The difference is that infinity is glossier, looks like glass, and blends in with the outer part of the screen.

A few more random notes - the machine is very solid, good design engineering. The keyboard feels very good though there are a few keys you have to hunt for (not too much different than any switch to a new keyboard). The fingerprint reader is very cool - being able to register the username/password for websites as a fingerprint scan is very nice.

I'm starting to dig on Vista - it just has such a nice polished feel to it. It was a little bit of a PITA to get VS2005 and SQL/Express2K5 up and running - there are a few tricks with account gyrations and patches to get everything solid, but I think I've gottten everything covered now. Also config'ed up a VPN connection and all that seems to work just perfect.

I had just a tiny bit been second guessing a Dell Studio 17, but I think this machines specs are more stout for less money (at least with the e-coupon I used). I was thinking the backlit keyboard would be neat, but the DV7T has a neat design with the reflective bezel around the keyboard that picks up light from the display and the support lights so it kind of *does* have some illumination!

    Real happy so far.

    @ DT

Does the fingerprint reader work with Firefox 3.0?

Also I agree about Vista. Seriously one look at Vista and I was in love. XP just looks fugly to me everytime I see it. I have no idea how I used it for so long.

yeah the fingerprint reader doesn't work with firefox 3 without addons. you can use fingerfox as a workaround though

    Regarding the fingerprint reader:

I recently downloaded the new Google chrom web browser. It was awesome, except that the fp reader didn't work with it; so I switched back to Internet Explorer. Has anyone figured out how to use the reader with Google Chrome?

In order to get Firefox working with the finger print reader, you may have to download the "ie:tab" addon for Firefox.

How are you liking the BrightView Infinity Display?

Have you had any problems with reflections under brighter lighting conditions?

Mine is set to ship on the 9th and I'm extremely worried it's not going to work out for me under florescent lights.

I've used it under florescent lights and the glare is not too bad. It's only apparent when viewing a dark screen like at the end of a full screen video etc.

Rebate has gone down. There's 50% off 4Gb of RAM making the upgrade from 2Gb to 4Gb only $50 at the moment, but the 320Gb upgrade option is no longer free and I forget what else has dropped.

Hi, I'm looking at buying this laptop http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF06b/321957-321957-3329744-64354-64354-3744231-3753795.html

HP DV7-1020ea, core 2 duo P8400, Vista HP 64bit, 4gb ram, 320gb hard drive, blu-ray drive, Intel® PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection, bluetooth, 17” WXGA High-Definition AG Display with infinity BrightView 1440 x 900 resolution. Can anyone confirm a few things for me?

    1. Is this the screen that goes right to the edge?
    2. Is it possible to add a second hard disc in this, and how easy is it?
    3. How good is the intel wireless on this? I have a netgear N Draft router.

Also, what is the build quality like so far? Had continued problems with my dv6000, wireless, gpu etc, so I'm looking for something that's going to last! :)
    Many thanks in advance ;)

I personally did not like the glare to the screen, way too much for my taste. I purchased a antiglare screen cover from photodon.com. for around $15 dollars. It significantly reduced the screen glare and looks excellent now.

I purchased a couple of dell Studio 17 notebooks, one for a friend and one for myself. As I was helping my friend set up his Dell Studio 17 (getting rid of the bloatware), there were some things I liked and didn't like about the dell Studio 17. First, the HP feels much much cooler on my lap than the Dell Studio 17 did. Also, I am not a big fan of the resolution 1920x1200 on an 17" and the next lowest option was 1440x900. I feel the 1680x1050 resolution on the HP is much better..perfect for me actually. I also like to game and the NVIDIA Geforce 9600GT is a better option than the ATI Radeon 3650 on the Dell. Last but not least, the speakers sound better on the HP DV7T than the Dell. Oh, actually a couple more things...I am using external eSATA hard drives a lot more now since files I transfer are quite big and the HP had an eSATA port. The HP also has a nicer design than the Dell. I don't hate the Dell Studio 17. Actually, if it wasn't for the heat, I probably would have been satisfied with the Dell.

i bought the vx nano wireless mouse ( http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Cord...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1220841497&sr=8-1 ) today for $44.98 @ staples - they were having a sale on 'em.

this mouse is pretty good. i've used my touchpad on my dv7t like twice since this thing just sits on my desk. lol. this mouse is awesome. the features i like: vertical scroll AND horizontal scrolling, plus there are forward and back buttons which are really useful for surfing.

    this thing rocks.

    pidge,

I, like you, was also considering a dell studio 17 notebook. I almost bought it and then I came across the dv7t and there wasn't even a question between the two. The biggest thing was the graphics card. nVIDIA 9600 was enough to make the switch. Not to mention the overall aesthetics of the HP are hands down better than the Dell. I would never buy a cpu based on the external aesthetics, but since I was already won over by HP, it only helped their case.

    timessquare,

Have you ever used the Microsoft Bluetooth 5000 mouse? I bought it to use with this unit and I love it. No external wireless adapters. I got an awesome deal on eBay too; 25.00 (including shipping) as opposed to 50.00 at Best Buy.

Thanks to the folks who commented on the Studio 17 - I was ~98% confident with my choice to go with the HP, but I did notice that right after I ordered our DV7T the S17 had a pretty major discount online (very close to the final HP price, even with a BD drive factored in). However, the specs (video, RAM) weren't quite as good. I have a closet with a few Dell Poweredge servers but haven't really ever been too jazzed on their desktops/notebooks.

So far things are still going well - it opens on of my major VS projects in < 5 seconds which is stellar. I've had a few hiccups with IE on some random pages and the full screen media services work great but aren't really keen on exiting - however, most of this is OS related, the hardware is just fine.

I ran on battery power last night - switched over to power optimized settings - for a solid 1.5 hours and seem to have plenty of juice left, so the power consumption [on battery power] seems really outstanding!

I opted for the 2.24 Ghz CPU, is that a 35W proc?

i have been using office 2007 professional - mainly word and excel - and have not had any problems thus far.

charon - do you have MS support through their end-user agreement for a half year or year or something? other than that, i would try googling for the solution - something which i am sure you have tried.

Hey this is a question not related to the dv7t but just Office in general. I bought it from Amazon. It's a completely legit version and I have it installed on 2 computers which is legal right? One is my former laptop. The other is my mom's computer.

However it seems to crash everytime I close MS Word on both computers. The first time it did this I didn't think nothing of it. However it continues to do this off and on again.

Does anyone know if this is a common issue and if so how to fix it?

^ i would go to officeupdate.com and download ALL of the latest patches. sometimes this fixes known issues. the fact that it's happening on 2 computers could be a sign of a known issue - maybe it's happened on other computer as well.

    http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/

Nixt3r and PDX - thanks for the heads up on daemon tools. The free version of it used to force you to install their toolbar/etc from what i was told so i never considered it. I installed this yesterday, minus the crapware, and it's working like a charm

After installing the latest video drivers (not from HP), the over-the-air HDTV reception works great. It is no longer choppy.

Is it legal to use the cd that came with my unit and use the same cd code to put it on her computer?

Well my new DV7-1020ea arrived this morning. Being from the UK, I couldn't customize it  But what a beautiful looking machine :D I'm currently burning the recovery discs, before doing a complete format to get rid of all the junk. 16 minutes on first boot to get to vista desktop  I have a question too, does anyone know if you can get the hard drive bracket/caddies seperately? I want to add a second drive soon :D

I've been very happy with both the dv7t and Vista 64. No crashes, no software glitches, and only a few operator errors! I think that after I become more accustomed to Vista, I will like it as much or more than XP . . . not that I had a love affair with XP, but it was serviceable and stable.

Need some help (someting different, right?...?) I downloaded the free student version of the AutoDesk program Revit Architecture and am trying to run the tutorials. I have to download the tutorials first, which I did. They are compressed into a zip file. But, when I tell the computer to unzip the downloaded file it says. "Can't create output file: C:\Program Files\Revit Architecture 2009\Program\TutorialsArchitectureImpENU.chm"

I don't have WinZip either. Everywhere I try to download it costs money ><

Anyone know how I can fix this problem?

    Thanks

I'm already having problems, HP denied my first order because paypal were arsing around, and instead of reviving the order, they made a new one, so I've lost the $200 voucher, they said they'd refund it after the item is shipped, except I'm also being charge extra tax.

So in the end I have to pay $200 more and hope they give it back... something seems wrong about this.

I know you just said you don't want a backpack... but that's what I've got, or soon to get. The girlfriend got me a Swiss Gear Ibex Backpack for my birthday this weekend (she's horrible at surprises). I've read good reviews about it and it is supposed to fit 17" notebooks. I'll let you know how it is when I get it.

Same thing with my exchange. The dv7t I ordered was DAMAGED while it was being shipped to me from China. It's THEIR FAULT. Their SCREWUP. Yet I have to pay $481 dollars more because the coupon I used at the time is no longer available!?!? Furthermore I have wait until they receive the piece of sh*t/deformed laptop I got from Fedex at their office before they start building a NEW one. Last but not least my new expected build date is the 16th and the refund for my $481 won't go into effect until they ship the new laptop....

Something is VERY WRONG with this situation and I will be complaining to the higher ups at HP.

Could you give us the website, also share the experience when you get it.
I have two notebook cases, both of them are designed for 17” laptops, but one needs to be ½ an inch wider, and the other gives me a hard time zipping it up. So I wanted to know, who had a case which is very commutable with this beast.

    Thanks

Sigh, e-mail feels like bargaining with a brick wall.
