My new dv7t was delivered yesterday around noon. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I've spent about 15 of the last 16 hours glued to it!![]()
The fan has been audible, noticeably so, constantly from the first time I booted up! Is this normal (hope not)???
I'd appreciate some input....Thanks!
BTW- I'm not a gamer, nor have i done any CPU or GPU intensive tasks. It's cool to the touch anywhere on the underside and the the keyboard is also...the area to left of the touchpad is lukewarm...barely so.
Thanks.

There is an option in the bios on my dv5t to turn the fan off of all the time mode. I did this once but got tired of hearing the fan turning on every 20 seconds.

In my BIOS settings, it said 'Fan Always On' and the choices were Enable or Disable. I changed to Disable, it ran for a minute or so when I booted up and has been off for about 20 minutes now.....surely that didn't disable the fan altogether? -
I seriously doubt it turned it off for good. Download a program called HWmonitor and wait and see what temperature it kicks in at. You may want to watch a movie or something to get it hot.

my fan is on all the time too but it's on a very very low rpm, and it's barely audible on my desk. the only time i have had the fan come on is when i am gaming - but even then - it goes back and forth, from the low rpm to high rpm.
if it's staying on high all the time, this is a problem. the fan will always stay on, at a low rpm, even if the machine is simply sitting idle.
correct me if im wrong, but i dont think the fan will ever stop - the only time it does is when the laptop is off.
i feel that this is probably one of the most quietest laptops. i have an ibm and those fans you can definitely hear when i have the machine on my desk.... when im using my dv7t, the only thing i hear on my desk is the fan at a really low setting and the hard drive writing, every once in a while - that's it. -

hope that mine doesn't have this problem!!!

It'll be fine. It's not off for good. TRUST ME! I have like a million DV7s...

^ he's not kidding. He has a dv7t tree in his backyard.
my temps when the fan is not at high speed --
that is when i have had the machine on for maybe 10 or 15 minutes, and it's idling or just has IE running. at this time, obviously, the fan is on but it's not at high speed as it is when you first turn on the unit.
the high rpm kicks in maybe 10 minutes after i start playing unreal tournement.
PS - i dont think this is a problem. if the fan is on and you are annoyed at this, then return the laptop. these things are performance monsters and they will run hot. and the fan will be on ALWAYS but ALWAYS on the low setting.
when you play games, the fan RPM will increase and cause the fan to be far more audible but this is expected behavior - not necessarily a problem with your PC.
if you fan is on high the entire time, send it back because that's a problem. -
My laptop arrived yesterday. I noticed that the fan is also always ON but on a low rpm. Disabling 'fan always on' option at the bios didn't do anything. The fan is still on all the time, again low rpm. I called customer service and we did bios upgrade, bios reset, and acpi uninstall/reinstall.. Nothing changed.
I have done another test.. I haven't heard the fan go on high speed yet. I tried playing 6 quicktime videos simultaneously and did my matlab simulation at the same time. I ran this for probably 10-15 minutes. cpu is running 100% all the time during this test. But my fan didn't increase speed. It stayed the same. the cpu temperature monitor that I have is always stuck on a certain value after the bios upgrade. I have read forums and they said that same thing happened to them, cpu temp monitoring will stop working after the bios upgrade.
From this forum, fan that is always ON on low rpm is fine.. But do you think the test that I did wasn't enough to raise the temp of the cpu and make the fan go at higher rpm? How's your hp laptop doing nowadays?
Thanks! -
. lol jk
