I posted this in the dv8t thread but since the dv7t is essentially the same model I thought I'd post it here too...
Just an FYI (something I learned after much frustration upgrading to the new BIOS). When I first got my dv8t I changed the BIOS setting for "Fan always on" to disabled. I only want it to be on when it needs to be on. However, after upgrading the fan ran at full blast all the time, regardless of the setting. It sounded like a jet. I tried resaving the setting to no avail. What fixed things (it seems) is to load the setup defaults in the new BIOS, *then* change the setting. I'm not sure why it would work that way, but it does. -

Looks like my machine will be here Monday, even though the scheduled date isn't until Wednesday, seeing as how it's already in Austin. Sweet! FedEx's speed is almost making up for HP's lack of everything.

Is there a difference between "two business day" and "expedited" shipping? My dv7t left Oakland at 3:26 this morning but it's not arrived anywhere yet. Maybe just missed a scan or two? I don't know FedEx routing to Tucson; maybe via Phoenix?
-
I didn't have any delayed shipping, I got two day by negotiating the exchange of the DV6T quad. Priority is the same as two business days.
Just got it and I'm dissappointed for the expected issues that others have had:
The left keyboard is terribly flexible and "CLICKY" most pronounced on the fn,alt & control keys. The metal screen at the top is raised on the top edge for about two inches, and looks slightly dented at the right edge of the raised area. The LCD has a VERY narrow viewing area. If you move even slightly up or down, or sideways you loose quality. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Someone here said that they fixed their keyboard by placing material underneath - wondering how to remove and fix it... I think that I can epoxy the screen down. HP's quality really is NOT good. -
If you got 2 days business, how is it shipping toady? Today is a Saturday.
-
It was shipped two days ago... don't know why they decided to deliver it in spite if it not being a business day.
-
Oh my god! I just checked my tracking number and it also said "On FedEx vehicle for delivery" after saying "Package not due for delivery" about 2 hours ago. I'm so excited lol.
-
fingers crossed for you; I don't think I'm going to keep mine - The keyboard alone drives me nuts.
EDIT: HP wasn't willing to give me any discount on an exchange for the DV8T quad, so I'm returning it. Great prices & value for this powerful lineup; if HP had QC, they would at least test them & fix these issues BEFORE they went out the door. I'll pay more for better quality. -
I finally received my laptop!
Great machine, fast!
I have 2 squeaky keys that "click" when pressed. No flimsy left side defect, thank God. No deadpixels.
My problem: The screen. It looks washed out, I keep screen brightness at maximum otherwise it's too dark, but the colors lose their vibrant tone and become washed out.
Tried fixing this with the NVIDIA control panel, it did help a bit but not enough. Anyone having the same issue? -
I did a clean install of W7 x64 and THE POPPING SOUND IS STILL THERE. I'm sending this back and keeping my Alienware.
-
-
Just started going through and deleting various bloatware and crap, and all of a sudden I was no longer getting sound from the machine... I'm not too too savvy with this stuff, but anyone have any idea if this would be a driver issue and what I can do to fix it? I didn't delete anything Nvidia related, so I'm guessing maybe an Hp driver?
Thanks, Bill -
Okay so problem fixed - I was using Revo Unistaller as per the advice on the out of the box thread and wasn't being careful enough deleting leftover files and folders, lol. VERY happy with the "restore" function of the program. All better
I really like the program its making uninstalls pretty painless!
-
I hear a lot of you saying that the keyboard is flex. What exactly is that? Can anyone explain it to me in a descriptive way or send me a picture?
-
-
I did a clean install and now I don't get the volume increasing/decreasing bar on the screen. Anyone know how I can get that back? Thanks.

Help needed from the SSD experts.I installed an intel 160gb 2nd genSSD in this laptop. How are you pros getting the use of the trim command ?
-
I dont know anything about these ssds..but from what I understand , on this laptop, the only way the trim command will be obeyed is by using the the intel toolbox,
which has just been removed by intel for murdering ssds. If this is correct, is the only option to wait for intel to fix it ?
Hp support did nothing but add to my existing state of confusion ( they were shocked that I installed the drive and it works ,they told me
you cant instal an ssd in this laptop, I told them to come look at this forum a little... but my only question for them
was trim support and they were more lost than I ) -
I also installed an SSD in mine, the X25-M. I notice quite a bit of noise coming out of the subwoofer. Seems like the drive (or maybe the CPU) is inducing a fair bit of RF noise.
Is anyone else experiencing noise from the subwoofer? It can be difficult to hear unless the room is very quiet. Sounds like someone's sending you a message in morse code. -
So for those that are returning their dv7ts, how long is the return policy period good for?
-
-
is anyones still stuck at dest sort facility??

Well i think mine is going back. Sometimes my computer wont bootup on teh first try, the comp comes on but never boots. If i shut it off and turn it on again it works. then on top of that im now having memory allocation problems. My system recognizes the ram but only 3GB are available. I think that the video card is taking some, but without being able to Map the memory in the BIOS, i cant do . Im quite angry.
-
Turbodude,
"My system recognizes it but only 3gb are available?"
what does this mean? How much memory did you order? When you go to "my computer" proprties, doesnt it show all the memory you ordered? why will a lesser memory be available when your system prperties shows all the mem you ordered?
Also does your dv7t have the keyboard flex issue? -
-
I ordered my machine with 4GB RAM. Computer properties show 4.00 GB RAM... Discrete graphics in here so it shouldn't be using any of that, that's the 1GB on the GPU..

I finally got mine!!!
Haven't messed around with it yet. Initial impressions (for the half a day i used it):
1. Really fast! Even with all the Hp bloatware! probably becoz of the i7 & 6gb!
2. Haven't tested any heavy app's, so haven't used the entire power theis machine has to offer. But using it, like i said, for almost half a day now, and it runs cool. Good to know.
Cheers. -
Does anyone have any idea how to enable ACHI ( for the sata ports) in the bios ( and I use the term bios loosely)
-
turbodude said: ↑it says physical memory 4096 MB but Usable memory as 3038MB. So its not available to use all of it. im using a 64bit system and it should be able to use all of it, Sometimes it will only show 2GB usable but physical memory at 4GB. It sucks.Click to expand...

SO based on what is currently running the used memory might vary.
Thats my 2 cents on it. I may be wrong. -

Do you have a dv7t or dv6t? And does it have the keyboard flex issue, which many have mentioned? -
banzemanga said: ↑I don't know where you are getting that information from but if you are getting it from the task manager or the resource monitor then i would say yes. Because Windows 7 is a big operating system and it takes a lot of memory for its operation. It tries to store everything in the RAM to make the operations faster (specially the x64). It has nothing to do with the hardware. Also, if you downgrade to XP you have to make sure you have all your drivers. And last, i don't know what you need the computer for but 80% of the users don't get to use 4GB of RAM unless you do extreme stuff like i do.Click to expand...

turbodude said: ↑i used cpuz as well as the performance manager. When teh comp sits at idle im using nearly 45% of my RAM, according to the task manager. Thats simply not right. who said anything about downgrading to XP?Click to expand...
I said about downgrading to XP because XP uses less ram (more or less 1GB) because you are unhappy how Windows 7 is taking away your ram.
Like i said, it is rare you use all 4GB of ram even with Windows 7. I can tell you because i don't use 4GB all the time neither. It is only rare cases that i do extreme stuff where i would actually need something like 18GB of ram.
P.S.> Unused ram is useless ram, so why not let Windows 7 use it?
