If the battery is at 100% and you plug it in, it'll be powered from the power supply, and the battery doesn't need any more charging since its already at 100%.

I am guessing you are talking about when you hover over the battery icon by the clock. Mine says "fully charged 100%" when plugged in. Also the charging light (lightning bolt on front left edge of keyboard next to power and hdd lights) will come on when I plug it in and stay on until charged. That is what mine does.

    MORE on Battery at 100%

    This from "Understanding HP batteries":
If the AC power is removed and reapplied when the battery charge is between 95% and 100%, the battery will not begin charging again until the remaining charge is less than 95%. This is to prevent short charging cycles which impact the life of the battery.

So now that many here have received their system and have had ample time to fiddle with it, what's the general consensus? Let's break it up into three groups:

A). Love it, everything you wanted/thought/hoped it would be. No
flexing, no dead pixels, no problems. Keeping it.

B). Have issues such as keyboard flex, dead / stuck pixels, sticky keys,
overheating, poor screen opinion, OS issues, audio pops, etc. May return.
    Still on the fence.

C). Flat out disappointed for one reason or another. One or numerous
serious issues. Returning for a refund. Seeking alternative option.

Just ran GTA 4 for like an hour. I have never played it soo smooth!
Temps reached a maximum of 79 on GPU and 82 for CPU.

    Cheers.

It seems like when I close the lid, there are some lights still flashing, and sometimes it almost sounds like the harddrive is running, too. The computer should be going in 'standby' mode upon lid close.

    I'm in Group A.

Though the keyboard does have a little movement to it (figures it'd be right on WASD on a "gaming" machine!) it isn't noticeable unless I'm looking down at my hand and see it flex. I can't feel it flex, and it doesn't impact keyboard input, so it doesn't bother me.

The only downside is that it added another set of blinking and solid lights to bother me in my dark room at night. Between the router, two other computers, a switch and other stuff flashing all night, it's no wonder I have dreams of being chased by the police....

Why do you keep asking the same question THREE separate times in only two pages? If no one here runs Linux, then asking the question a billion times isn't going to get you an answer.

Given your name (like Linuxer), why don't you try it and let us know!

Hi Did anyone else here have this issue?
    I have a dv7t quad with Win 7 Professional.
When I open mediasmart webcam application, it open fine and I can record content fine initially. But when I try to delete the recorded content which appears on the right hand side, it looks as if nothing has been deleted. Then when I close the recorded content window, the main screen appears with blank webcam image, and the hp mediasmart software hangs?
    Has anyone experienced this?
I have reinstalled the lastest software/drivers, but nothing seems to help.

    Thanks

I belong between A and B group. Although i have complains about the laptop (keyboard flexing, etc) i won't return it because it works fine.

    @pkirangi
I have the same problem but with the webcam.

This laptop heats up really a lot. Good thing the ventilation works great (otherwise the inside components would be in trouble) but can't put it on the lap or something specially playing games. It gets burning hot. BURNING!

If you are so much in love with Linux, install it on VMware or virtual machine. Other thing to consider is, do a fresh install of Windows 7 and partition your disk so that you can install Linux. Also, Google or Bing it and you'll find some nice tutorial on how to do it. :)

I don't really have a problem with the heat... but maybe that's because the Dell I'd been using had a fan on the underside of the back right, and would just blow scorching hot air at me while I tried pushing that little 1.5ghz Pentium M to its breaking point.

I don't own the computer yet. I won't buy it until I am certain that linux will work on it. I apologize for asking so many times. I am subscribed to multiple threads/email lists about this computer and must have not realized which I had already asked the question on.

That's an inadequate solution. I use linux as my sole operating system and the overhead and complications attached with running vmware (as well as the incompatibilities) do not make for a very good computing experience. I do know how to partition, I just wanted to know if everything was compatible (especially hyperthreading/turbo boost before I bought the computer.

I'm in B group, leaning towards A. I am still evaluating all the compromises inherent in this laptop.

I'm finding problems and working through them one by one. I had some severe problems with the vertical viewing angle. I think that reducing screen intensity and maybe adjusting nVidia parameters may make that acceptable. While I very much like the readability of text and size of fonts, I wish the screen held more information vertically. That boils down to wishing the screen were 16:10 instead of 16:9, but that seems to be a disappearing format. Currently I'm trying to figure out why the touchpad slowed down so much after installing Logitech V450 driver and whether there is anything I can do about that.

    Compromises, compromises....

The trackpad is very slow for me too. As I posted a few pages before, my wireless logitech mouse is fairly sensitive, so I had to turn down the speed a little bit in the control panel. However, the speed slider controls both the mouse pointer and trackpad pointer speeds.

I've just finished some experimenting and it appears that touchpad and mouse have separate speed controls. I think I've found settings for both that will work.

    I keep my fingers crossed.

I just finished installing all of the drivers. Some of the latest drivers were not available on HP's homepage but in each brand's page. For example, Intel's latest chipset driver was found in intel (of course HP had a working one but was not the latest version).

    I have a few questions:
The back-lit key sensors like volume and play. They work but when i use them, i don't get any display respnse like i used to do. For example, i slide the volume key i used to get in the display that volume was increasing. Now, volume increases but it is not displayed and so i don't know by how much.

About the IR remote controller, is there a way to configure the keys to my own preferences? For example, I don't like Windows Media Center and i want it to launch Media Player Classic instead and so on.

Control Panel/Mouse/Pointer options and I set speed to one notch to the left of Fast. Then click on the SetPoint Settings tab, select pointer options, set Pointer Speed to Slow.

I may decide to slow the touchpad down one notch. Otherwise, these settings seem to work for me.

EDIT: Turns out that Logitech installs a little startup program that resets the Windows mouse pointer speed to its default value at startup. So every time you reboot, touchpad speed returns to its default value. The workaround is to use MSCONFIG (or other utility) to disable KHALMNPR.EXE. I have read that you may lose the ability to set mouse pointer speed on a per-program basis in SetPoint, but that's not something I care about.

I would like to know if there are options to turn the lights off towards the top of the unit, below the screen. I'm pertaining to the volume controls along with everything else. Ideally in a dark room the *only* light I want to see should come from the screen. Why is every damn company so insistent upon making so much light up with no way to turn it off altogether? Red standby-this, permanant green / white that......blink blink blink.......

The only additional light I want is a keyboard with a backlight and the *option* to turn it on or off as desired. Does this keyboard have a backlight for typing in a darker room? Am I going to be able to set this up to watch a movie in a hotel and *only* see light from the screen, as opposed to all over the place?

Yeah, the windows bootloader takes care of that fine, as long as the primary operating system is within the 1024th cylinder. Otherwise the computer will fail to post and none of the hardware will work for some reason.

If you are a Linux-primary user, I would not recommend this laptop. The ACPI tables are not standards compliant and users have reported overheating using linux distros because of this. As long as you use Win7/Vista, the laptop is great, sticks to around 40C with basic audio/video/internet usage and goes up to about 82C in games, but any other OS and the temperature control is limited.

They could correct this with a bios update, and they severely need one to correct this and other major issues, but so far they have only released an update that fixes a specific and minor problem with apple products, so there's no sign of anything in the near future, unfortunately. Because of this serious fault and their slow/absent response to it, I'm in the B group, leaning slightly towards C. Terrific laptop for pure Windows users (especially with the discounts in the last month), useless laptop for anyone else.
