I got this one
http://newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=222
Works pretty good, much cheaper than original HP part, looks just as good as the one for my main drive. It's for 2.5" sata drives.

What do you guys think? Should I:
1) Have HP repair it (I wonder if they will use "new" parts). Will take about 2 weeks.
2) Process an exchange. Will take about 10 days.
3) Buy from another store and spend a couple hundred more. -
I registered just to add to the thread.
I just recieved my loaded up DV7t this morning to replace a failing DV9000 series 17" laptop and has to say I am very disappointed in it.
The left side of the keyboard flexes and rattles when I have my hand resting on it. Also, I am disappointed with how smudgy it gets but could live with that issue. You would think that for $1000 they could provided a solid feeling laptop.
Looks like I'll have to start all over again in searching for a laptop. I need to get one soon too. I am afraid the one I am working on has an imminent motherboard failure in the near future. -
Here's my system's boot time
Some of the System tweaks you can found here too.

I hope mine doesn't rattle when it gets here around the 7th of December. When you order the laptop, make sure everything is correct, because they won't be able to change anything once the order has been placed. I had to cancel the original order and place a new order in order to get the expresso black color.
[68droptop] Let us know if you find any good deals on other notebooks, this dv7t quad core seems to be the best bang for your buck if your going for an i7 core.
I wish I waited a few days to take advantage of the free blue-ray upgrade, but if the laptop is solid, then I'll keep it. -

TO Oceanfirehawk:
RETURN IT before your 21 days is up. Honestly the best buy model is not worth it. I LOVED THE DV7t but I kept secretively thinking I really want bluray. So I did the unthinkable today ): returned it. I'm gonna go with the DV8t now. I loved the BUILD quality of the DV7t and I said what's an inch regarding size plus 1080p. But yeah dude, return it have them send you a new one maybe with some compensation. -

They are building me a new one and will send it out when it is done. They also included expedited shipping on the new one and sent me an RMA label for the old unit that I will drop off at the nearest FedEx location. They should at least do the same for you.
I tried to see if they could switch it to the white but if I did, I would not be able to use the $500 discount codes that I initially used on the order. Needless to say, I stuck with the black.
I had them also put a note on the build order to please double check the keyboard before shipping the new one.
On top of all of this, I was able to get them to knock another 10% off of the total price of the unit for the inconvenience. Total end price will be $912 including taxes. I am happy with that price as long as the unit is solid. I will put the additional savings towards a 3 year Square-trade warranty.
The build consists of:
dv7t quad edition
Espresso Black
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB)
4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 3GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 230M
17.3" diagonal HD+ High-Definition HP LED BrightView Widescreen Display (1600 x 900)
LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
Intel Wireless-N Mini-card
HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner
HP Color Matching Keyboard
8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

I didn't know keyboard defects were so common on the DV7t?
A little off subject anyone know if HP plans to do any black friday deals with the DV7t or DV8t? -
thanks man!
just what i needed
did you install an ssd as your primary?
im thinking along those lines
but have heard pretty conflicting report as to performance improvements so was curiou as to your experience -
I can also tell you that transfering some large files across my regular drives in the laptop I was seeing between 45 and 50MB/s transfer rate, as reported by windows. -
I have received my dv7t three days ago, everything is great. Do you guys know how to enable Turbo Boost in bios? I have checked all menus but no option there.

-
My order shipped this morning! Hope the keyboard is solid.

Hoping that your 1k notebook will arrive working properly...

really any laptop has a billion different areas that could be the tiniest bit defective that require a complete system replacement. Its not like buying a new monitor where a dead pixel means you just get a new monitor but the rest of the system's good. Even a mobo problem, just get a temporary mobo or replace it easily at a microcenter or something. The worst part is that unfortunately most every laptop maker needs to do replacements through the mail, and best buy or the like will be charging as full price as they can and then are even harder to convince than manufacturers about things like dead pixels.
It's just a required part of buying a laptop, dont play the game unless you're prepared for the consequences! -

I have a few questions for you guys:
If you have two hard-drives, will the laptop support Raid?
Can you choose which hard drive you wish to boot from in the Bios? -

FYI, you can get a std dv7t Quad Edition today (Black Friday) using a $400 off coupon (NBN4RK3WS) and 20% Bing cashback for $719.20.
I just ordered one, with a couple of upgrades, for $974 - 20% = 779.20. Not bad... -
-
Also, if I buy today, and a better deal comes out for Cyber Monday, is it easy to cancel my order and buy a new one? -
This is so tempting, I might have to re-order one of these
Looks like HP doesn't want to sell the DV8.
-
The coupon and cashback has worked in the past for me (using hp.com). Keeping my fingers crossed. -

i wouldnt put all your eggs in the coupon+BCB basket, part of the reason they even offer the huge bcb on black friday is because they are more critical about it when deciding whether to give it. I myself might get a 50$ cashback when it was at like 5% or something, and thats the type of thing that might slip by them. HEard lots of no BCB stories especially last black friday

Although we will still keep it for the kids, it is meant to replace her generic desktop with an AMD Duron processor. I have a P4 3.0 Dell Dimension 8300 desktop. According to passmark, the processor comparisons are:
Duron 237 / 717 (rating / rank)
P4 3 483 / 502
i7-720QM 3354 / 67
I think a reasonable improvement. I hope she likes it!
I do have a laptop or more of an anchor-- Toshiba T4700CS-- complete with Windows 3.11 (?) for Workgroups.

Hi all, Over at the HP forums, we have a big problem. No one that we know of has been able to get his iphone or ipod touch to synch with this laptop. there have been numerous calls and emails back and forth. HP denies all responsibility. We need to know if anyone has sucessfully connected an iphone or ipod to this DV7 laptop, and if you have, how did you do it.
-
Yikes, I have an iphone, would like some input on that too.
Also, is there an overclocking guide for this laptop? -

fresh install of RTM win 7 x64 home premium, microsoft security essentials and nvidia drivers installed, freshly secure-erased intel x25-m G1 (restores brand new write speeds to SSD) and this is the end result. Thus, why everyone should consider an SSD.
By the way, HP can go screw themselves for making the BIOS so effing crippled in their laptops. Especially how there's no option to boot from the secondary hard drive, and no sata AHCI/IDE switching. I'd also have liked a turbo boost option, hyperthreading option and such but I would have been fine with at least the first two, and am furious without them.
You need IDE mode for secure erase of G1s (I had to use my thinkpad), and its obvious why you'd want to boot from the 2nd HDD. I'm surprised they even have the virtualization stuff with how much they crippled this crap. -

I've just exchanged my dv6t quad within the 21 day window for the dv7t for the same price 899.00 as the 6. Now I've got HD resolution, wireless-n adapter, blueray player, 8 cell battery instead of 6 cell, & got the 500GB HD. I called for the exchange and they threw that in, free shipping for both the return & exchange - build date expedited for Dec. 8th. I know that it's a lot bigger, but it's use will be for the downstairs office & upstairs media room. Here's to hoping my keyboard won't be flimsy.

I agree the bios options seem inadequate. Boot from 2nd drive would be nice.. to remedy the situation I plan to install linux grub boot manager at some point, that should do the job I think. I could probably use the windows one as well, but that's one ugly boot manager.
I did turn on virtualization in the bios. I'm using it for virtual PC XP mode and it works great. I can synch my palm treo with it since palm has not released a 64 bit driver, and I'm not holding my breath since they've done nothing about it since vista x64.
On another note, I haven't tried to synch my ipod touch yet. Will report when I do. I suppose in the worst case I could use XP mode to synch it as well? But that seems less than ideal. Oh and that will not work for windows home premium, since XP mode is not available.
