Something tells me it only converts USB 3 to eSATA. A few people seem to have the same thing. But nothing that converts eSATA to USB 3. I emailed Addonics about theirs. We'll see what they say.
-
Wow, quick with the answer from Addonics! Nope, it only converts USB 3 to eSATA. I did make the suggestion though. Funny, a few companies are advertising that BYTECC unit as an "eSATA to USB 3 Converter". But if you go to the BYTECC site, it's clearly USB 3 to eSATA.

Anyone has issues with the fan? Mine is going on and off every 20s or so. Doesn´t matter what Power Plan I choose, or what setting I have selected in HP Coolsense.
Is driving me crazy!!! -
Enable "fan always on" in the BIOS.
-
It has been ON since day 1.
-
I think someone else had a fan problem that turned out to be a bad bearing.
Luckily mine is near silent. -
That was me. I received a replacement and the fan has been fine ever since.
I think one other possibility for my fan problems with my first 4290US is that there could be a faulty temperature sensor that was causing the fan to go on/off rapidly. It was a very annoying problem, especially when I was working in a quiet room. -
Did you just check it?
If you're positive that that's not the issue, look at your temps and keep your task manager open to see if any processes are stressing the cpu. -
What's everyone's LCD make/model? I've got the LGD027A.
-
I have the same LCD.
-
I have a Samsung PX2370 and a Dell ST2420
-
Man i think they are talking about the dv7 screen and not for what external monitor u use..
But i am curious about how many differnet types of screen has the dv7..
I thought this is the base screen http://www.lgdisplay.com/lgdhp/app/productPopup/notebookView.dev?seq=1159 that uses.... -
Just a quick question. Does the SB dv7 use the same battery as the old dv7? I know that the same battery is used in the dv8 and dv7 using the older Allendale chip.
How much time does the new SB dv7 battery last when just using it normally? I am very happy with my dv8 but am considering the dv7 as a mobile laptop.
-
I'm not sure which older DV7 you are referring to, but it uses a different battery form factor from my DV7 Gen 3 and Gen 1. The SB DV7 uses the same chassis as the Gen 4, and I believe the batteries are the same (feel free to correct me if you have the Gen 4).
-
@monkeymonkey, thanks for the input. I have a DV8t and do not have a dv7 of any vintage. When I bought my 12 cell battery from ebay, the seller listed the same battery for dv7 and dv8. I took a chance on the form factor which was perfect for my dv8.
I did some reading about the SB dv7, with the 9 cell HP battery apparently the battery will last to about 5 hours which is what I was hoping for. By the time I did my due diligence, the $500 coupon expired, so I will wait for the next sale. -
I just went through the whole process. The coupon NBL18742 is VALID !!!ehren13 you just saved my day!!!!
Added the Bluetooth and a 9 dell battery. Will probably add in the future a cheap SSD and move the 1 TB HD into the 2nd slot!!! -
Congrats, Husky55!
-
I'm in the exact same spot. I'm definitely gonna go with a Sandy Bridge but have been torn on the dv6 or waiting for the SB Envy or dv6/7 refresh.
-
sorry for the off topic question.....with all these problems with this sandybridge dv7 (especially the drivers for the graphics card and fan) ...do you guys think its still a better than a dv7 selection edition with core i5 2.66 ghz and 1gb ati radeon hd 5650?... I just want to make sure that I pick the laptop that will last longer down the road and will be able to handle most future games at medium settings...
-
Answering my own question. I emailed HP with this question for both dv7t and 17" Envy. The first tech said RAID-0 and RAID-1 are available with the Envy. You have to tell them which one you want at the time of ordering. For the dvt7, it's a separate tech. So I emailed him and he said RAID is NOT available for the dv7t.
-
You guys who are waiting for an Envy sb refresh, buy the 4290 dv7 from Costco for 1099 free shipping and you you will get 90 days to return with no questions and no restocking fee or anything. I have returned /exchanged several over the years. The staff there even encourage it. Aim due my 4290 in a week and I am sure by the end of April hp will have the envy out.
-
why bother when you have to have a costco membership to get it? and when there's the $500 coupon floating around right now?
man the $500 coupon is one of the sickest deals i've ever seen...good stuff! -
I think his point was to buy and use a SB-based notebook now, and still be able to buy the SB Envy when it comes out without return hassles.
I looked up "hassle" in the dictionary, and it said "Hassle--See HP PC returns".
Your suggestion is great if you want to buy and KEEP a dv7t, but the idea was to ultimately have a SB Envy. -
I t seems to me you really want an Envy 14 with SB and the radiance screen so why not wait for it. I think that the envy refresh will come soon enough, possibly in February. HP will have some promotional coupon/sale again.
-
Just some info for those who want to add an SSD or second HD to the 4290 dv7, this is the caddy you would need:
2nd Hard Drive Caddy & Cable kit for HP dv7-4000, dv7t SE series [HP-dv7-4000] - $38.55 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks
I really hate HP for using all different kinds of caddy for basically the same HD form 2.5". My DV8 caddy would not fit this dv7 4000 series but it would fit the dv7 3000 series.
-
Glad someone was listening. Another benefit at costco is they add another year of warranty for free.
-
Ive built my own pc but have only replaced memory in a laptop. Is it difficult adding an SSD on your own. What do you just make recovery disks and shift the OS onto the SSD in the bios settings?
-
Every sight Ive seen sell this says its WIDI ready. Is it?
-
@michial, yeah, thats what i did. I imaged the drive C (Had to image only < 55gb though) and uses Easus Todo Backup to restore it on the SSD. (System partition and main boot one only and HP Tools have to fit in your SSD you plan to install)
What took a long time was creating all 8 DVD restore disks and backup all up via imaging to an external WD Elements drive (Really slow these drives).
And the WiDi is said to be attached to the bluetooth adapter... and there's a sticker mentioning WiDI.... just don't have a way to test it out. -
wow it's got some very low ratings on HP.com. my guess is that those users are expecting way too much or are way too picky. some of the stuff their complaining about is the touch pad (which i don't care about since i only use mouses), the pad being in the way (we'll see about that when I get mine), and others that says the design is out of date...
i guess i'll see, or won't see what they're talking about when i get mine in a couple weeks... -
When someone can't do the double tap to drag and returns a laptop for it, I guess it can't be helped...these are really new stuff I also had to ge used to. There's a double tap at the left top corner too to turn off the touchpad, so you can palm type. And enabling tap zones and scroll areas is just a google search away... if people aren't that tech aware of these...then a laptop with this kind of touchpad is really not for them.
-
Yeah...I'm getting used to the touch pad on my 6. I ordered a new 6 yesterday, and tried to order a new 7 also. But my credit card would not accept it. I ended up getting a fraud alert. I guess my CC company thought that a laptop on the 4th, plus two on the 20th was just a bit odd.
Oh well...
I really wanted to have both a 6 and 7 side by side so I can test them out. But at this point, I may just go with the new 6 since both have the exact same i7. -
Speaking of the touch pad, does anyone know a way to enable two-finger tap for right-click? The synaptics software only has settings for three finger tap gesture.
-
you can try the reil's envyTouchpad program from the envy forums.
-
What does that even mean? lol
-
Lol...yeah I know right...I think these people are just the whiner types...
-
You can tell from their user names... hpRMA... he he
-
Yeah, take those negative reviews with a grain of salt. And I again recommend buying from costco so you can have three months to test it out. They now have the bluray version too. I used to have a macbook pro and all it takes is getting used to this track pad. Its a fine pad. You read some of the most ridiculous reviews . I wish you could remark on those review sites direct to some of the stupid comments.
With the specs on this laptop and the good price its got to be pretty awesome. I wish there was more uploading on youtube and stuff to get more user feedback on this sandy bridge goodness. -
I know what you mean, especially that guy who thinks that the 6570M is comparable to the 5400. He clearly didn't even buy the damn thing...
-
I'm not sure if this is the correct forum but I have just received my new DV7T-5000 Laptop. Containing the following:
Have spent the last day doing some cleanup and installs of the software I will be using. I purchased this to use as a photo editing machine and have installed Adobe Light Room 3.3 on it. Will let you know if I find anything I think will be of interest to the forum. -
That 400MHz GPU clock worries me a bit. At load, it should be 600MHz and at idle it should be 150MHz. Really weird.
-
I haven't had it long enough to watch the speed. I just installed HWinfo for that post. Don't know if there is anyplace where I could control a setting. Very limited BIOS from what I can see.
-
I tried to downclock it with AMD Gpu Clock Tool to 150/100, as soon as I set the speeds the screen goes all blocky and the computer locks up.
A GPU Bios update could fix this. Do we know if the GPU is MXM? -
The clock tool probably isn't compatible.
HWiNFO might have just read it wrong. Try GPU-Z.
All of HP's laptops have soldiered GPUs. -
When you bought your did it come with the backlit keyboard? I know you can get it from HP.com but on costco.com it does not say....just might not be listed in the specs. I need a backlit keyboard.....
-
Actually that´s the one I use to OC every single Mobility Radeon and works a charm.
I´ll try GPU-Z -
Wait....are you talking about a dv6 or dv7? The 7 is not offered with a back-lit keyboard. If it were...I would have ordered the 7 over the 6. Maybe older versions had a back-lit keyboard....
-
Ahhhh...that was where I was confused. I was looking at the DV6TQE on Costco.com and it did not say whether it had a backlit keyboard or not. But your right I see from HP.com that the DV7TQE does not have the backlit keyboard option...thanks!
-
The 6000M-series vBIOS might have caused an issue.
