Been looking at getting this computer for some time now. Just was waiting for a good deal. Here is the setup.
I have a few questions that I need clarification on.
First, is 64-bit ok to get. I've read a lot of articles stating that not many things are 64-bit and that drivers are hard to find, and so on. I believe these articles are a little old but I would like to make sure program running and such is ok.
Second, there are so many processors to pick from. You have the:
T4200 (2.0 GHz)
T6400 (2.0GHz)
T6600 (2.2GHz)
P7450 (2.13GHz)
P8600 (2.4 GHz)
P8700 (2.53GHz)
Choices can be a good thing but it's too confusing here. Is the T6600 better than the P7450? Uh...
Third, there are two video cards to pick from:
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS
Which one is better here? I would think the 9600 but that's just a guess. Seems like the 9200M GS is just now available in 512MB instead of 256MB. So maybe that one is.
If anyone can give some support here it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

9600M GT is better than 9200M GS.
I'm using 64bit here and it works perfectly with almost everything these days! All drivers work fine.
-
Most things work on 64-bit. I use it and have only come across a few programs that were incompatable. And all drivers are supplied for 64bit by HP.
Any of those processors will work good. Id say the P8600 is my choice though.
If you are playing games, go for the 9600M, if not, the 9200M. -
Yeah these days I would get at least a P7450 (as its Centrino 2).
As far as I know the processors performance increases as you have listed them (though this is not always the case).
-
Plus, it would seem as though that if I get the P series then I could possibly upgrade through the P series later because I would have a motherboard that supports only P? -
No P and T serries use the same socket. The T means 35watt while the P means 25watt. Both motherboards are socket P. I would reccomend the p7450 or i would the p8600 because i dont like the number 7.

The differences in speed between the p7450 vs p8600 isn't too much. But if the price difference is a lot between the two (if over $75) then I would stick with the p7450

This is going well. Thanks for the information everyone.
Is the screen brightness really that big of an issue? I wouldn't be getting the Infinity display. -
To me it is very important. I dont know how much of an advantage the infinity gives you anyway... -
Ya, I just heard that the regular screens were not that bright but that the Infinity screens are too glossy and they get dust/glue particles inside of them and you can't get them out.
I guess I'll head over to Best Buy this weekend and take a look for myself. I don't think I want to get a warranty with this either. I know they are nice to have but it's a lot of money. And I don't like how hp has you send them your laptop. Dell just sent a guy over within a day or two and he fixed it right there. It was great. -
I have an infinity, and often it isn't bright enough. It's a VERY dim screen.

Hi,
Im also thinking of getting the DV7 1020ea, however slightly been put off by people saying the Wireless adapter software not working properly and some say the mute button doesnt work.
Okay, minor hardware errors maybe, but the wireless on/off not working properly?
I like the specs of this notebook, but im still wondering whether the Sony FW is worth it, even if it does have an ATI 3470 card only?
Thanks, -

So is this a good deal for about $1200 or do you think there will be a better deal within a month or two?
