Can't say it's fixed; but so far I haven't seen it for two days. I installed all of the updates on HP's download page, including the BIOS update (which appears to have fixed the 'false overtemp warning' when exiting a program which was booted from a CD/DVD). If the control problem shows up again I'll install the "HP Tone Control Utility" file. The reason I haven't installed it yet is that it reduces the size of the Treble/Bass control by approximately half.

    Will keep you posted.

I remember reading that some people were not able to sync their ipod's to their dv8t. I got a portable hdd and transferred my music to my dv8t, but now my 2nd gen ipod touch will not sync. i was just hoping someone could point me toward a fix. Thanks

No My laptop has been reset to factory presets, and I have not updated it. Will that bios fix the issue? If so could someone tell me how to apply it.

Well... Installing the latest BIOS is quite easy actually. Download it from this page, under BIOS for the dv8: Latest Drivers for the DV8t-Quad You can install it directly in Windows 7. However, some people are experiencing problems with this new BIOS update that makes the temperature sensors give inaccurate numbers, which causes the computer to think it is overheating. Some say that it is solvable by installing the BIOS and setting it the factory presents, and then rebooting and applying your settings afterward. Although I recommend waiting it out and installing the next BIOS version that is free of bugs. A person who called HP Support in this forum said that HP is working on a fix on this issue. I, myself, have not installed the latest BIOS version yet. If you really want to sync your iPod Touch, just install it, but I recommend waiting it out just to make sure that you don't mess up your computer.

Just cancelled my order for the Dell Studio XPS 1645, and placed an order for the DV8T. So much more value from HP on this system; coupled with the other issues Dell seems to be having with the 1645 (highlighted elsewhere on this site) - their CS was completely unresponsive when confronted. Feedback on this thread was extremely helpful, people seem to be having a positive experience with this system - thanks to all for the information. Was going back and forth between these two systems initially. Can't wait - supposed to be built by the 11th.

MY DV8T IS A DOOR STOP!!
    </marquee>
    </html>

I just got this thing last week. It's locked up on me 6 times. What happens is the video goes blank, then the speakers crackle and the fan shuts down. All the light are lit on the keyboard but nothing happens when I press any keys or move the mouse. I called Hp and tech support transferred me to three different areas. Finally I got someone that spoke English. He pointed me to the latest firmware revision and we applied that. Now the fan run continuously but at least I have better Iphone support (who cares if the laptop is locking up). So two day have gone by and the laptop locked up again three more times. Now Windows won't load because the NTFS dirty bit is set to on and check disk won't run. The hard drive light just flickers once a second. I called Hp back and they couldn't fix it. They wanted me to send it in for a repair. I said "sorry send me another one for an exchange because I have a 21 day exchange policy".

Well that turned out to be a real ordeal because I used "BILL ME LATER". They refused to allow the transaction to go through. It turns out this is a "SCREW ME LATER" situation now. I have to tell you I'm not ever using them again. So we did a conference call with them and Hp. They just flat out refused to do it unless I returned the laptop first so Hp could process the credit to my account. Then they would process a new order. That could take two months. So I ended up charging a new laptop on my credit card!

My original order was for two of these, two XB4 Media Docking Stations, and 2 Video Dock 2.0. The other one is still in the box because the wife hasn't cleaned up her old system yet. I guess I better get on the ball and function test the other unit before the 21 days run out.

There are several posts on this forum on how to quiet the fan after updating the BIOS. Just write down the BIOS settings before restoring to default settings.

Since my fans are pretty much running full blast since this bios update, is their a chance this may damage my system? I still have a warranty, but I really dont want to send my laptop back for several weeks.

Well I tested the battery today and just browsed the internet and listened to music on the power saver plan. The exact time from power on the battery lasted for was 1:51:50 before it powered itself off. I remember reading the HDX 18t review which is like the same computer and they got 3 hrs and 11 minutes on the high performance power plan with the screen to full brightness. Then I thought well this has the new core i7 chip too and is using the same 8 cell battery. A little later I'm gonna put it through another test and see how long it lasts for on the high performance power plan.

Hello, I am thinking of buying the dv8 because I want a large desktop replacement with good specs (like the high res screen). I won't be carrying it around much, only in the house. However, I would also like to work with it in the garden on a bright day. Do you think the screen is OK for that? Or should I buy the dv7 with LED screen (although that has a lower resolution)?

I hope someone can help me with this, because it is an important thing for me. I did search the forum, but I didn't find any answers yet. Thanks!

Viewing on practically any notebook outside with a glossy panel would be hard to see. I'm not gonna recommend you the DV7t as the screen isn't as good as this one. The colors really pop off the screen and the edge to edge glass looks amazing. 1080p is the perfect resolution and is better than the 1600x900. Its more recognized and HD looks way better on it.

All I can say is so far I am LOVING my DV8t. Only small complaint so far would be battery life. Its very poor but this is a full desktop replacement with a new chip so its not going to be that great.

So far I am loving my dv8t, but I am having some very annoying issues with syncing my iPhone. Is anyone else seeing the same issues?

Also, every now and then the "Treble" slider will just pop up on the screen and fluctuate up and down without me touching it. Very odd.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I guess you're right about the fact that all glossy screens aren't really made for working outside. I have an old HP nx9420 (on which you can't see a thing in the sun) and a Samsung NC10 (which is really great in sunlight), so I am not used to glossy screens. Hope I won't be too annoyed by the glare (e.g. due to lamplight) working inside. However, I will also be using the laptop to watch movies etc. and therefore I am looking forward to the great resolution and the colors of the dv8.

Yes, I would mostly use the laptop in and around the house, so the battery life isn't that important. It is a laptop replacement indeed, for other situations I plan to use my NC10.

I get around two and a half using a custom set of power options for Power Saver, 100% brightness (for one minute anyway~) and WiFi on.

I averaged about 1-2 hours on my long life 8 cell battery depending on how I use my DV8, heavy duty video encoding, with BT and wifi on etc.. or just do word and/or excel or surf the net.

I noticed that Ebay has the 12 cell battery for this laptop at about $65. Wonder if it would increase the battery time by 30%?

My 9 cell Gateway battery last about 3-4 hours but the cpu is a P8600 duo core.

Honestly, on the HP Recommended Power Plan and only listening to music and browsing the web I did expect around at least 2.5 hrs. Now gaming or watching a bluray I can clearly understand the hour and 51 minutes.

Anyone else notice the fan get a little loud. Last night it got very loud and wouldn't turn off and after I got done dong my work. Then again I guess it was just trying to cool the notebook.

If you're going to reset the BIOS to default, first write down the settings before you reset to default. Then, after doing the reset, manually enter in the previous settings. This will get rid of the fan 'on high' problem.

From what other users are saying, these items appear to hold true:
    1. Reflashing the BIOS will NOT reset the BIOS settings, it will keep what was set before flashing.
    2. Once you flash to a new version, you can NOT reflash back to an older version.
    3. Doing a 'System Recovery' will NOT change the BIOS version.

I had the same issue, what I found was that if I unplugged the power cord from the unit, and replugged it in, it went away. I tossed it up to some sort of static charge issue. Worked for me.

So now I have a second 500GB HD on it's way so I'm pretty much 'maxed out' when it comes to hardware on my dv8t. My question is how do I figure out exactly how my "4GB DDR3 System Memory (2Dimm)" is configured. From what I understand there are two slots for RAM and I want to know do I have one slot with a stick of 4GB RAM or 2 slots with 2GB each? And if I do have 1 stick of 4GB can i just buy another 4GB stick and install it as easily as a second HDD?
    Thanks!

Rebooting makes it go away too; but it'll be back. About every 2-3 days it shows up for me. I've done all of HP's updates except the Tone Control ... all to no avail. That will be my next try. I'm waiting to implement it because it changes the size of the control to about half.

If you do the update for the Tone Control it might make the status indicator box or whatever you call it really small. On my fresh install of Windows I download the tone control directly from HP's site and it made it really really small and didn't even work.

If anyone has looked at both the dv8t and dv7t quad, I'd appreciate knowing how the LCD panels compare, particularly with respect to vertical viewing angle. Is the appearance of the dv8t's screen about the same as that of the dv7t? Or different?

I know the screen is a bit larger and 1920x1080 instead of 1600x900, but am not sure that's any practical difference to me.

    Thanks!

Well I had the Dv7t and it was great but the screen on it is nowhere as nice as the DV8t. Viewing angles are amazing and text is crisp and sharp. I am loving the 1080p resolution. Gives me so much more room to have windows open. Personally I'd wait for a good deal to come out for the dv8t then I'd go for it. It's not as big as you think.

Does anyone have a dv8 where the numeric keypad does not bounce when you press any key? I sent one back to exchange it because of this.I just got my new one and it has the same issue. I called back HP tech support. After doing some checking they told me that it was designed that way. They said because of the extra length the numeric keypad is not fully supported.
So if I could please get some of you to check and see if there is any play in your keypad. The rest of the keyboard is very solid on my unit.
Other than that I just love this thing to death. I would return it in a heart beat if I didn't. Also getting it for $999 with a $500 off coupon makes me want to hold on to it. I'm just worried about the keyboard down the line.
P.S dont forget as was posted earlier anyone that bought an HP between 11/1 and 12/24 has until 1/15 to return it. NOT 21 DAYS!

    Hey Jim,

As a matter of fact I had a HDX16 (which I gave to my sister) and I used to edit HD on it. It could do it just not as fast. On my DV8 I use Sony Vegas Pro with 4 gigs and it works wonderfully. (Debating to try Premiere) Back in the day I had to convert my raw m2t to the intermediary avi/m2t using Cineform so I could edit easier in Vegas but now with this laptop I can edit AVCHD easily straight off my HD camcorder (Sony CX500v). I only render back to m2ts and put them on disk and play them back on my PS3. Haven't messed with AVI etc. I do recommend over 4 gigs of RAM though. I wish I got 8 instead of the 4. If you decide to go with the DV8 I recommend spending a little extra and get the Bluray burner. I did and it kicks butt. Burned most of my raw m2t onto several 25gig BD blanks and my favorite edited stuff I threw them on a 50gig BD.

Hope that makes sense. I'm tired and I'm at work :)

Mine does and I do use it a lot. Nothing MAJOR. Slight spongy bounce :)

I think im going crazy. Last night i did a reinstall (windows 7, 32 bit) and it all worked. 4 cores, 8 threads, switching back to 933MHz to 2.6GHz at full power. This morning i boot up the laptop and it has 4 thread, and constant stays at 1733MHz and does not switch. Battery power does not matter, power plan does not matter. I am going crazy........
