I check out a ton of free software--over on Slickdeals--when various promotions pop up. It's always nice to pick up the pro versions of software for free when they're regularly $40 for a year. I picked up ZoneAlarmPro for free a few weeks back. I install and remove so much software that I never keep track of which services go with what. Stupid post-uninstall zombie services...

But it is true, after years of using firewall services... the only times an new internet-capable service pops up is during a software install initiated by the user. Better knowing than not I say.

That's why I trying it out for now as it seems pretty fast when I scan something. Only noticeable drop in performance is when I do a system scan. I'm planning to using a lighter program like Eset NOD or something when the 60 days is up or even sooner.

This is the list of softwares i'm running on my computer :

Avira Antivir Premium (i bought a license just to support them but the free version was more than enought)

Malwarebytes anti malware (free version without real time scan)

Microsoft Office 2010 (Just Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel and nothing else from Office like additional tools, etc)

Adobe Master Collection (Just Photoshop 64 bits, Illustrator, Indesign, Flash, Premiere and dreamweaver, nothing else)

Firefox and some plugins (Noscript, Adblockplus and few others)

    CCleaner

    MSI afterburner

    Notepad ++

    Adobe reader

    Digital Persona

My Canon printer software (just the driver, not the bloatwares coming with)

    Tagscanner

    UltraIso

    Any DVD

    And some drivers (few)

    Google earth (free version)

Picasa (specialy for the viewer better and faster than the one coming with Windows)

IDT audio and iDFX pluggin for Windows media Player (impressive plugin for Mp3 audio quality)

    Dream Aquairum (lovely)

    Not a big deal ;)

No codecs, specially the packs :), no special drivers for any device (Windows 7 is doing very well), no software to "speedUp" my computer (the same who slow down like TuneUp, Clever Cach, etc).

I don't use any software coming with the DV8. HP media is useless, Corel and Cyberlink softwares are outdated...). So get rid off everything except few drivers. Even my Windows is from a Retail DVD, i didn't like the HP personalisation ;)

Check on the Real Player preferences if there is an automatic update option. And disable it.

On the tray, you should have a java icon. Just check if there is an ption to disable the auto updates too.

Real Player and Java doesn't have many updates. You can just check for updates once a month.

Then, select the lines i listed in red and clic on fix it. Then post your new log to see something better hopefully.

I just disabled the Real Player updates. I don't see a Java icon on my tray.

I can't click on the red you highlighted.

Like others a few times my DV8 hasn't detected the Fingerprint reader when waking up from sleep. During those times I had also found that it wouldn't accept my password which kind of worried me. I would end up having to hold down the power button to turn it off and then restart it.
The other day it did it again and as I was trying to put in my password I noticed the screen flashing slightly and the cursor moving back to the left. I realized that it is refreshing the screen to try to detect the fingerprint reader which automatically moved the cursor back to the left. So I think when I was putting in my password it was coming out like drowssap. Of course I hadn't noticed this the first few times because all you see on the screen are identical dots. After that I made sure the cursor was in the right place before typing the next letter, it actually accepted my password for the first time. My only other problem with the laptop has been the issue others have had with the video card crashing. If anyone has any fixes for either of these that doesn't involve advanced programming let me know. Changing the BIOS is beyond my skills.

I've never used it. Can't say anything about. Sorry

Good for real player, for Java, can you see it on run > ms config > startup tab?

Very strange that you can't click on them. What exactly the problem when you try to clic on them?

Wich version of Digital Persona is installed on your computer?

Ok, just disabled Java according to the instructions you mentioned.

About the red highlights, doesn't do anything when I click on it.

Try to restart your computer, run hijackthis, just scan without log. Try to select red lines. And clic on fix button.

If it doesn't work, we will use another way ;)

You can already download CCleaner from piriform.

A very nice freeware to clean the registry and some other things on Windows.

Once you downloaded it and installed it. Run, CCleaner, on the left side, clic on registry tab. Select everything and run it. Once Analysed, you can fixe the errors. Fix them but backup them when prompted.

I would highly recommend to never clean your registry. It provides ZERO speed improvement (and in some tests, actually slows things down a tiny bit). At worst, you'll completely blue screen your computer and have to do a clean install.

Unless you're one of the few that know what you're doing in there, don't clean your registry.

Is it true with most of the tools like JV16 power tools, Registry Cleaner, etc.

TuneUp utility registry tools is maybe the one who can F@#@ up most your computer.

This is very different with CCleaner. It is very safe. He never delete strange registry entries, etc.

For the point of the utility of cleaning the registry, i would like to know where you found that cleaning the registry is useless?

I know very well the Windows Registry and how does it works. Most of the time i clean it or modify it manually with regedit and search function.

When you can delete 20% (rare case in my sister's computer) of a 38MB registry, how do you think that is not optimising the performances?

Cleaning the registry is a good thing for performances but you have to take care of what you are doing and wich tool you are using to do this.

Why a fresh install is running much better? Just because the registry is clean.

I don't trust Panda, bad experiences in the past. That doesn't mean that Panda is bad. I just don't want to try it anymore.

Avira is very light too and at least, is very trustable. It's one of the actual top antivirus and there is a free version.

Good comparison, what a pitty there is no panda. I thought that an antivirus which stays in the cloud would be less in the way of the performance of my machine. But then again, i'm not sure i grasp this cloud concept completely. Thanks

I would love to provide the article. I read it about 3 months ago. The guy did multiple tests and benchmarks to see if there was any improvement, and there was NONE.

Again, I think it answers your own question. Why would deleting 20% of 38MB do anything to speed?

    Strange question but...

    Ok,

Try to make a big image on photoshop. Something like 38 MB and open it.

    It takes few seconds.

Now remove some layers and make it 30 MB and open it.

It takes few seconds and no real difference.

Now make a note on Notepad. Type just few words (maybe 10) and save it.

Copy this note 1'300'000 times in a folder.

Check the size of the folder, is maybe 20MB.

Try to open this folder. And tell me how fast windows did.

Now try to search a word within a file in this folder.

Then, remove 20% of those files and try to open it and find something within.

    You have your answer.

I thought this thread was a 'help thy neighbor' with their dv8t, not a 50+ line 'show and tell' of every program we have on our computer. Think what a mess it would be if every dv8t owner would do that here.

So you're paying $2700+ for that setup?

For my dv8t, with 8gb ddr3 1333mhz, with an extra battery, blu-ray burner, etc etc etc plus a 4yr warranty with ADH - cost me $2115.29, after tax (shipping was free)

I'm currently upgrading the processor to the i7 820 (just for kicks), bringing my total to $2430.xx. (Or, I could have gone for the 756gb (256gb ssd, 500gb 7200rpm), bringing my total to $2500)

But going with my first setup, you're paying $600+, with fewer years on your warranty, granted - with a better graphics card ($600 worth?), AND you're going to upgrade to 8gb ddr3? Even if you sell the 6gb of 1066mhz, 1333mhz is far from cheap.

Not sure that's the best bang for your buck

He get a better laptop anyway. The 600$ difference is for the graphic card much much better than the poor 230m we got with our laptop.

The build quality is much better than HP build quality (priceless). (My laptop is completely taped with double sided tape, keyboard, covers, etc to reduce vibrations caused by the speakers... and even like that is not perfect)

And i don't know if you got or not an SSD drive for 2100$ but any SSD is more expensive than the 500GB 7200rpm delivered with our laptop.

The speakers are much better too.

Hopefully he get a better support than HP (priceless too)

here in Switzerland, the difference is 1400$ betwen the Toshiba and the HP and we didn't get the new models yet with the new graphic card but i understand very well why he pay 600$ getting less RAM, less waranty and no BR burner...

That's impressive, but simply too expensive for the average buyer... especially with technology being outdated so quickly.

    I'm happy with the basic DV8t build I got (4gb, 320gb) for $870 shipped.

I'm inclined to agree... BUT, it's possible others may be interested in some of that information, considering the other fellow wanted help with his stock dv8t build. All the software will match for other new buyers.

That said, that "log help" probably would have been best served in back-and-forth PMs, but what's another 2 pages added to this massive thread? It's not like you can really find anything in here anyhow. If it's not on the first few or last few pages, it's lost to the sands of time.

Well I do some gaming, graphic design, programming, etc.
Plus going to college, and tons of more stuff...
I am keeping my wireless printer, 27" external monitor, 2TB external harddrive I also got with hp.
Don't get me wrong, I have had little to no problems with my dv8, but I need the extra power from the other laptop's graphics card...plus, this will be my only computer for a few years...
And seeing as how HP is draggin it's feet in upgrading the video card, and the faulty drivers/bios upgrade, I'd rather not deal with the future problems that could arise.

So the toshiba will be better for me...
I'd get another like 100 back from what i paid for my dv8 if I didn't get overnight shipping...but I need it now as I'm already in week two of the current college semester.
It also has led keyboard, which really doesn't matter too much to me, but does help at some late night gaming/macros with my autohotkey scripts and programming...

Honestly I'd probably just upgrade the 6gigs ram to 8gigs of the same MHz, it wouldn't make too much difference except when running GIMP (Better than photoshop IMO) because I have about 18gigs of brushes for it...

All of this is being put on student loans anyways. :D

The speakers are alot better in the toshiba...
And I really do like the fact it comes with the SSD for the boot drive, I have never had one, but have heard nothing but good things about a speed increase...
I'm hoping there's enough space on the SSD for just my OS, and the main game or two that I play (Counter-Strike: Source, ModernWarfare2).

I just see Avira being the first. Avira Premium or Free version are using exactly the same engine and updates...

Norton is just a joke beside.

When Avira get 74% of detection (first place), Norton get a poor 36%...

Better to discuss coupons, which will help many, than to list every damn program everyone has on their computer, which virtually helps no one.

What's the problem? Think about it. When you use a search engine to find help on a problem, the seach engine will get boggled down with all of the BS ... including the list of all software on your computer. Now multiply this by the number of dv8t computers owners out there, if they would all see fit to list every program they have on their computer, and I think you will be able to see what the search engine will end up with.

It was possible to search this thread with Google for REAL problem fixes, before all this BS was added; Example:
"graphic" and "OFFICIAL: HP dv8 Owners Lounge" site:http://forum.notebookreview.com

If we continue on with what's happening, the results we will end up with are everyone's graphic driver and/or card.

If you want to discuss your software, feel free ... that's what email and private message is for.

(Hopefully this will help more than listing all of my software)

Did you bring any info? Did you help anyone?

If every single DV8 owner comes here just to troll like you, for sure even Google can't do anything for us...

BTW, if you don't know how to use Google to find something, just ask how to do. Maybe i'll help you...

I have the same version but first i installed the 4.11.3805 and that was the beggining of my problems.

After this, no way to make Digital Persona working.

Until i installed the Validity sensor driver from Acer. It's basically the same but it's worked...

Then i noticed that my boot time was afected by something. Like 5 seconds working on i don't know what.

I checked and i saw that Digital Persona was working and taking ressources on boot time.

I checked the registry and couln't find any bad key. Then i decided to reinstall everything (fresh install of Windows).

Installed directly the last version (i saved this version with Digital Persona update program) and installed directly the Acer driver.

    Now everything is working flawlessly.

I think that the version 4.11.3805 added something wrong in my registry and it's very hard to get rid off this.

Well guys I got my dv8t back. All those horror stories about HP's repair service proved to be false thank god. I had the fear that I was going to power it on and still have messed up bios lol. Thankfully that wasn't the case, they did do a complete factory restore and wiped all my files off the computer. I now have Bios version F.13? So far I have loaded the dv7t GT230m driver and IDT driver on the computer.

I hate it, and other Antivirus...
I have AVG to do a scan maybe once a month...
Otherwise I use CCleaner to clean out junk temp stuff, have a adblocker on firefox, and just know where I'm getting my from. :D :D
    lmfao.

@Matt, Glad to hear you laptop is back and is working...Interesting that you're using the dv7t drivers...Too bad I'll be getting rid of my laptop, or I'd be anxiously awaiting to hear about their performance.

Thanks Accipico for your help. I do notice my computer boots up a little faster than before now. What I'm going to do next is try CCleaner and see what it can do. I won't mess with the registry beyond what that product is suppose to do. And I won't post long list of programs from Hijackthis any further so that should make others happy.

Hopefully CCLeaner will take out some of the trialware and other unused programs safely. Depending on the result from CCleaner, I guess what I might also consider is go to Best Buy and have their Geek Squad do their computer tune-up service.

I've had 3 separate HP units sent in for repairs in the past. All experiences were exemplary, with quick turnaround time.

People who have good experiences don't bother to post their reviews. It's the pissed off people who speak their mind. The numbers of angry folks who have been mistreated are out of proportion--at least when you compare the reviews online. And when you're the number one selling laptop manufacturer in the world... well, prepare for even more complaints as their business grows, and their system for handling customers becomes more automated (having problems? They'll swap the Motherboard without any real testing, send it back, and take further action IF you still have issues).

By the way, several of us have already stated that the newer geforce drivers (dv7t posted included) provide NEGATIVE performance results, when compared to the stock drivers--and you were the one to previously ask about it. So... why?

He's returning it--he already said he's had his laptop a paltry "week and a half". Why waste effort finding a buyer and wasting money on shipping and transaction costs when HP will pay for the return shipping?

Your right, you do never hear of the good experiences. I also didn't check the prior posts before posting tonight so I didn't see that his was going back to HP.

One thing I will say is using my 3 yr old Dell inspirion e1505 for a week the dv8's screen is so gorgeous.

I can't stand the "mellow" tint and brightness of the HP Pavilion line, but at least it LOOKS good. The only positive for DV8 owners--the brightness is passable because we often can't take it outside in the light! The smaller versions (Dv6) get horrible reviews for outdoor use.

Be sure to run some benchmarks--I noticed significantly reduced performance on the newer geforce drivers, including the one that was supposedly put on the dv7t page. Additional second-hand confirmation is always appreciated. I'm sticking with stock for now.

I sort of have to agree with VeryHappyCamper. I came back after two days and had to wade through page after page after page of information, most of it useless. And as far as Trolling; it appears that you, unlike VeryHappyCamper, did a personal attack. That's trolling.

This forum is now more of a blog; and when someone can't even post their ideas and thoughts without being attacked: that's not for me, I'm gone.
