Make sure you've installed the proper SATA drivers before enabling SATA in the BIOS again.

PS, guys.. please don't PM me with questions. Sorry, but I'm a busy guy and don't have time to answer every question. I spent hours working on this guide and if you follow it 100%, it seems to work just fine. If you're having trouble, re-read and do it over again. And keep in mind, this guide was written SPECIFICALLY for the dv8000t. If you have a different laptop, I can't guarantee this guide will work for you.

Now if HP wants to send me a new laptop every time they make one, I'll be glad to write a new guide. :D

Yes.. in my first post I said "QuickPlay" but I meant "DirectPlay". I didn't get mine working, so maybe someone else has answer on that one.

i got mine working..following your guide

basically you install quickplay (not directplay) first, then you install the quick launch keys. restart. install directplay. restart. let it initialize and do all that stuff..a few minutes..and then it should work. it did for mine. (no jinx!! :))

maybe though you can answer this question. i only have one exclamation point in device manager - under mass storage controller. as far as i know everything works yet i have this exclamation point and i tried to install from swsetup looking in a few choice folders and windows update found nothing either. what could it be? lastly, windows update offers driver updates to the sound and quickplay buttons should i do it?

Mass storage controller sounds like the media card reader. Make sure the drivers for the media card reader are installed properly.

this is a question about the dv5000t. i'll post it here instead of creating a new thread b/c the reinstall is basically the same.

i got my volume and mute button working, but prior to formatting when i changed the volume i would get the green bars on the bottom of the screen to show me how high or low the volume was. kinda like what you would see on a TV when you change the volume. anyone know how i get that back?

Burn it from where??? If you are thinking about the i386 folder, then it might be possible but you will have to get the BIOS ifo from the current installation so that it wont as for the CD key. I would just order the $10 CD, since it will spare you extra work/trouble and you can just use that disc which is a clean version of Win XP.

Hey MDesigner... It seems that a lot of people keep having problems with Quickplay. It all has to do with the fact that the 1028mb partion is being left behind when reformatting the hard drive. I think you should change the original post to follow Superman23's instructions. It is better if you delete the 1028mb partion and just leave it as unallocated. You can then run the quickplay software that can be downloaded from Superman23's guide. The program will automatically create the new partition from the unallocated space. This will solve all quickplay issues and make everyone's life easier and will make your guide complete.

By the way.. thanks for the guide. It worked like a charm except for the quickplay portion.

For anyone who has recently purchased a dv2000t and is following this guide and are doing a reinstall make sure you use the HP quickplay direct 2.1 that comes in the swfolder to view DVD's without booting up xp. do NOT use 2.0 as it will not work. It took me a wehile to figure it out.

    18. Click "Have Disk", and browse to SwSetup\HDD, and click OK. Choose "Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller", and click "Yes" to any update driver warnings you get.

I am unfortunately missing this file =( Is there anywhere for me to get it? I dont have a laptop drive handy so I really need to get this thing installed.

    Thanks

After an few trials, I was able to quickly and successfully get my dv5000t up an running. Note that I didn't have a SATA disk so that apparently cuts out a lot of trickiness [if you have SATA see MDesigner's post]. I even got QuickPlay to work [and not just inside windows]. Below I'm posting exactly what I did, most of this is probably redundant to what others have posted. Still I thought I'd share. BTW, MDesigner -- Thanks! -- this would have taken much longer without your post..

    1) Copy C:\SWSETUP\* to DVD or external harddrive. If you already cleared your HP hard drive -- just run the recovery disks which will recreate SWSETUP and the QuickPLay partition [very time consuming ~3h]. You did create recovery disks, right? Otherwise contact HP about obtaining recovery disks...

    2) Install XP wiping partitions except for 3rd (1GB QuickPlay Partition). I used the XP Pro CD provided by HP. BTW, I noticed that even if you wipe all partitions the provided OS cd automatically creates a 1gb partition for quickplay whether you want it or not..

    3) Driver: from c:\SWSETUP folder [I installed in the following order]:
Chipset - Intel Chipset Driver [install first]
Video - Nvidia Geforce Driver [install second]
1UAA - Microsoft HD Audio Driver
AUDIO - Conexant HD Audio Driver [must install 1UAA first]
    BTOOTH - Bluetooth
    HPQPDP - QuickPlay install
MISC3 - Texas Instruments PCI Driver
MODEM - Conexant HDAudio SoftDataFaxModem Driver
    TOUCHPAD - Symantec Touchpad Driver
    WLAN - Broadcom 802.11 Driver
    WLAN2\IproDifX.exe - Intel ProWirelessDrivers
QLP - QuickPlay [so QuickPlay works inside windows]
QLB - QuickLaunch [install QLP first]
NETWORK - Ethernet Driver [must be installed from within Device Manager]
HSC - HP Help and Support [optional]

    4) Lightscribe -- this one is a little different because you must alter a batch file to reflect the location of the installer. Just run the following from the lightscribe directory (or create a .bat file constaining this):
    LIGTHSCRIBE\msiexec.exe /I LS_HSI.msi UPDATE_SHELL_COMMAND="http://www.hp.com/go/techcenter/lightscribe/" SOURCELIST="%CommonProgramFiles%\LightScribe" SHOW_DESKTOP_ICON="1"

    5) I installed all windows XP updates including 2 driver updates, seem to work fine.

I'm not sure if anything else in \SWSetup is worth it. I guess if you have a TV-Tuner there's some additional drivers, and also if you have SATA. I couldn't figure out what MISC1, preload, Langbar, sw_ver, and hpOSEnh did, or if I should install them -- generally I avoid installing all this crap. I was also scared of Brandit because it looked like it might be loaded with bloatware. Also, has anyone found anything of use in \SWSetup that I missed here? Thanks!

Just a quick question from someone who doesn't exactly know what he's trying to do here...Is the Windows XP Boot CD the thing that is created with the PC Recovery Disc Creator, or is it something else? I know that my computer didn't come with any extra discs. Thanks!

Nope, the recovery disc will bring the laptop back to factory state. If you want to do a clean install you"ll need a Windows XP disc.

    1 new question:

I found this thread after I had formated my HP. It was a great helper, but i have allready made to partitions, plus the one for Quickplay. Is it a way i could trick the QP to install, some kind of hiding the D:? I got plenty of files on it, so it would be great if I could install it without deleting them..

I am unable to install the HDD SATA driver because once I do step 18 and point wizard to SwSetup\HDD, I get the following message.

I think this is because i purchased the notebook with XP home but have a XP Pro cd which I did a fresh install with.

"The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed.
Choose what you want to do.
To keep the current software, click Finish.
To search again in another location, click Back."

    So I have
    Intel(R) 82801 GBM/GHM (ICH7-M Family) serial ATA storage controller -27C4
    Primary IDE Channel
    Secondary IDE channel.

It still remains as a Primary IDE channel instead of the SATA ACHI controller....

Im following this on a dv6000t. I still have the SATA support disabled and dont want to turn it back on till I know what to do next or where I can get the correct HDD driver.

Tried installing the driver from intel but I can't install intel matrix storage software because it says that I don't meet the minimum requirements.

    anyone???

phew never mind... i fixed it now.. took me a whole day for just a simple answer... where you have to press "have disk" i kept thinking I was doing it correctly by "choosing the directory"...

another confirmation that this method does work.

This is also a step by step graphical procedure on BIOS and SATA hard disks in ACHI mode.

I had same error code as MDesigner..also was able to fix by rearranging partitions so that that QP 2.0 had a 1024 mb UNPARTITIONED space to install itself in. BTW..as was mentioned..the QuickPlay 2.0 install files are in the SWSetup folder..which subfolder I cant recall as I changed it to say QuickPlay (gee...imagine that HP!) Good forum..thanks..

This is what's listed under mine:

    IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
    -Intel(R) 82801G(ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF
    -Intel(R) 82801GBM/GHM (ICH7-M Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller-27C4
    -Primary IDE Channel
    -Primary IDE Channel
    -Ricoh Memory Stick Host Controller
    -Ricoh MMC Host Controller
    -Ricoh xD-Picture Card Host Controller
    -Secondary IDE Channel

3 things I don't understand here are 1) it seems the SATA is installed properly but why doesn't it work when I enable SATA support in bios? (it gives me blue screen) 2) How come I have two primary IDE Channel listed? And what device is on my secondary IDE channel? I am confused. 3) I still have one unknown device under "other device"...I let it search my SWSETUP DVD but it couldn't find the driver. :( Help!!!

My NX9420 has been one big headache. When I got it I must of missed where it one time says make recovery disk. It wasn't until windows was loaded and I saw a recovery folder and did that.

Somehow I wanted the HP recovery disk I thought might be different and HP sent me (free) a XP PRO and separate drivers disk.
I formatted the drive after backing up the SWSETUP and the I386 folder.

Trying to install that XP PRO stand alone was causing BSOD, Trap errors, stop loading at various points.

Then I read something about disabling SATA support in the BIOS and NOW it seems to be going through the whole windows install. WOW

Did that fix it or was it just a lucky hit that made it go through.

HP is sending me a replacement since it wouldn't boot. I also had a problem with the 4 USB ports. Seemed only one supported 2.0. HP even tried to tell me it only had one USB 2.0 port. (didn't try to say which one)

    WRONG.
According to HP’s web site the NX9420 has four - 2.0 USB ports.

    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00706089/c00706089.pdf page 1-1

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/e...-89315-321838-f1-1839153-1839212-3254503.html under audio, slots and ports.

My device worked in one but not the others. Any ways this is covered in another post.

    Thanks,
What does disabling NATIVE SATA in bios do?

Okay all, forget my rant and ravings about USB this and that. A HP reputable person here in the good ole USA trouble sot it and I found my USB ports do work as they are suppose to. Only my on e USB 2.0 device does not. He said he thought HP would probably put out a UPDATE or driver fix that would correct it. I bought it and will wait and see.

NOW I was having trouble installing WINDOWS XP PRO. I found that disabling Native SATA support and windows would go all the way through. Why HP doesn't know this I don’t know. Otherwise it will cease and you will get corrupted file this or that or Fatal exceptions errors. So disabling Native SATA support worked. Then I couldn't enable it till I found this site and who ever MINER is.

My hat goes off to him and mucho kudos to him. What a job and it worked like a champ on my NX9420. Your the best!

    Thanks

Curious, I'm not sure what Quick Play is. My NX9420 I guess has it but no docs I know of.

Plus and a biggie...After I got it all working and thanks to this terrific forum, is it possible to use Acronis to back up my install. In other words, what happens when I need to re- install with SATA support. Turn it off again in BIOS?

    Thanks
    Dave

You should probably thank the creators of the guide. I just organised them so people can find it more easily.

Dont worry about Quickplay, it is only found in the consumer line of HP notebooks. The business class notebooks do not have this feature. As for as imaging the HDD & disabling SATA in the BIOS, there shouldnt be any need to since you are just re-imaging the HDD and the SATA drivers should already be installed.

You were right. ACRONIS (took a long time) worked.
Now I have three disk. Acronis startup CD and two DVD backup disk. I got my installation up to all widnow updates, Office 2003 updates with Perfectdisk 8.0 and MY Documents. Essential stuff to continue working except Perfectdisk. Heard it was better to defrag before making a backup.

Still gotta wonder why my HP window restore disk didn't seem to have SATA support?

    Thanks again.

    Hagar,

You can create the recovery disk at any time by running the program that creates the recovery discs. If it like the consumer models only (1) set of discs is allowed to be created, then the program refuses to work.

#2 The XP PRO "install disc" that HP shipped you should contain ONLY the OS, and should install without you needing to disable SATA... I see above you got it working, just wanted to set the record straight.
I had a dv8000t that I tried for more time than I can to admit to get a "custom" XP install with some apps already slipstreamed in that would auto install the apps without much luck,,,, Using the HP provided install disc it installed the first time smooth as silk.
Note that a OS-Re-install disc, is different than a System Recovery DVD offered as a option on some models... Back in April-2006 I ordered my system with a OS-Reinstall disc -$10.... Now that option is N/A... only thing showing (on consumer models) is a stupid System recovery dvd containing all the boatware that puts the system back to as shipped condition for $19 thru HP... it being the same info that is created be the recovery disc creator.

My guess is either you got a defective disc, or they sent you the wrong part number:

Check here to confirm they sent you the correct disc.

On the USB, just yesterday I read a post that stated that in USB 2.0 only (1) port shows up in XP... USB 1.0 1.1? showing each port. Unit may have 4 ports, but it only shows up as (1).

Consider also that if the ports aren't working, "My device worked in one but not the others. Any ways this is covered in another post."
the OS re-install disc is not "booting" and you had to disable SATA support on a disc that should have it you might have hardware problems.

sub question assuming that i can follow this process:
i already made the "all in one hp recovery discs" that initial setup asks you to make, and have noticed that afterward my SWSETUP file is significantly smaller (3.35gb). Can i still follow the same instructions with the smaller SWSETUP file?

i also should note, just incase i made a backup copy of the recovery partion on an external drive i have, if this is of any use.

and just for my peace of mind, is this partition drive copy, set of recovery discs, and SWSETUP disc sure to get me back to where i started incase i screw things up after formatting? and secondly, is there a way around the lock that HP puts on that drive?

I see that you have the AMD version of the dv9000 series. In that case you dont need to worry about SATA issues, just boot with a Windows XP CD and follow the standard installation procedures. You shouldnt face any issues since you already have a backup copy of SWSetup folder and have burnt the recovery discs.
