After putting my brand new notebook computer into sleep mode by closing the lid (with "sleep mode upon closing lid" selection activated) it wakes itself about ten minutes later (with the lid still closed!). Twice I opened the lid to find my login prompt, and once I left it closed where it eventually went off again by itself after about ten minutes. Does anyone know what is going on? I am worried about it starting up by accident when I am carrying it (where damage to the harddrive might occur).

Interesting.. I just bought the laptop (9000t) yesterday. Won't be getting it until another couple weeks though.

Are you running Vista Premium? Regardless, you should probably check the energy-saving area of the control-panel for any applicable settings there.

Are you using an external mouse, by chance? I had a similar issue earlier today, and realized that the machine turned itself on after I bumped into the mouse with the computer closed and on the floor, with the mouse next to it. I looked at the mouse properties and unchecked a box that allowed it to wake the computer.

    Hope this helps

    Evan

Hmmm. . . Yes I have an external optical wireless mouse. Thank you for that information.

I just checked for mouse properties and could not find the option box you suggested.

    Hi,

I have a dv6244 laptop and the same problem.
In fact it also happens when I hibernate the computer, doesn't matter if by closing the lid or by going to start menu and click hibernate/sleep.

This is really annoying... The other day I put it to sleep and before I walk out the room it was already on again!! In less than a minute.

Are you certain that the system is going to sleep? Some programs might pevent it from doing so.

I hibernate mine last night, when I woke up its on. I look in the windows event logs and it had been on since 7-ish am. So I hibernate it again, and when I come back home from work at 6pm, its on again. So again i look in the logs and it had been on since 2:03pm. Damn it. This damn laptop is no good for be taken on trip, it'll just power itself up in the bag and burn to death and/or suck all the battery up!

And yeah I have looked in all the events in the logs and I dont see anything that could explain this.

Sorry, I should have followed up. EvanATL was right. An external mouse (and movement of it) was the cause. After unchecking the button suggested, the problem ceased.

Oh... well I don't have an external mouse, it's just folded close and it turns on spontaneously. But I have a dv6000t not a dv9000 so its probably a different issue.
    Thanks

I have no idea why your computer is doing that. MY HP 9205 will not go into sleep mode. When it tries to go into display off mode it trips the screen saver and brings the computer back into regular active mode. Any reason why this occurs? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks!!!

my dv9000 did that and I found out it was simply not closing the lid and making sure it is clicked shut on both sides where those tabs on the lid insert into the spaces. Apparantly you have to make sure they are both seated properly.

Any scheduled task might wake up the laptop on sleep mode...
