HP dv9000t - Speakers stopped working today (headphones are fine)

I have the HP DV 9000t and so far I love this machine. However, as of today my built-in speakers are not producing any sound. When I plugin headphones to either headphone jack I can hear sounds just fine, so I do not believe this is a problem with the soundcard. I talked to a live-chat HP rep and they said I have to send it in - but I really cannot be without this machine as it is my main work computer. Can anyone help me get the speakers working?

So far I have:
1) Made sure that nothing is muted in the sound options
2) Made sure "laptop speakers" are selected in the control panel>sound propeties.
3) Plugged in headphones and can hear sound fine (from either headphone jack).

Some laptops have the option to turn off the integrated speakers, that way the only way to hear sound is through the headphone port. To see if your laptop has this enabled go to the volume control panel by clicking on the little speaker in the task bar. Once that is open if there isn't a button that says "Advanced" under the main volume control go to the options menu and select "Advanced Controls" then go back and click the "Advanced" button. Look for a check box with something that says "PC Spk Mute" or something similar. This might not be your problem, but something easy worth checking.

 

Thank you for that suggestion - I did check and there is nothing like that checked in my advanced options. Any other thoughts?

I just tried headphones again and they are working perfect so I'm guessing its something directly related to the speakers.

 

Is your bass set very high? Do you use the speakers constantly? Do you listen to audio at a very high volume setting?

If you can answer "yes," it's very likely that the speakers just blew out, and you'll have to replace them.

 

Hi, I think its not the right moment but soon ill get dv9000t, what do you think about it?what is you specf.?

 

I don't listen to them very loud - I think if they were blown I'd still hear some sound, albeit all jacked up.

Spitfire - I love this laptop. Aside from the speaker problem it has been nothing but wonderful. Everything I expected as far as speed/etc. In fact, thats why I can't send it in for repair - it has quickly become my main computer and I am now doing all my work on it (web development).

 

I faced the same problem for my new DV9005t. No voice come out from the speakers. I therefore sent it back to HP, they said it is due to sound card failure and had to change the mainboard. At last, they gave me a new one.

 

I also face this problem recently , my headphones are working fine ,but the speakers aren't. (i guess its a problem from vista updates). i tried to reinstall the sound driver again. but nothing happened

I had the same problem on my hp dv6000 for a while. Headphones would work just fine but the built-in speakers stopped working. At first i thought there was no way it was a sound card problem b/c if it was the sound card, neither the headphones or internal speakers would work... but i updated and reinstalled drivers anyway. No luck. Then i noticed the speakers would sometimes work for a second when i removed the headphone jack. I then knew it was a short in the jack connection or just a bad connector in the jack. Sooo, I just plugged in the headphone jack a bunch of times and after about 20 seconds ramming, the speakers were working just fine and i haven't had a problem since! Sounds crazy but it worked for me.
There is a physical contact that switches the current from the internal speakers to the headphones. The contacts have been known to be faulty. make sure this is not the problem before blaming it on drivers/soundcards/antivirus software.
A friend of mine also had a similar problem, but he took his computer apart and gave the contacts in the jack a good cleaning and everything worked out fine. Of course, don't open up your laptop if you don't know what you are doing.

used philips 390CCS contact cleaner.. sprayed it directly into the jacks.. and then plugged and unplugged my headphones a dozen or so times. and speakers have come back to life

I think that might be your only option, unless you use external speakers.

had the same prob with Dell Inspiron 1705. Blowed air for a bit, jammed the jacked a couple of times and (thankfully) it went away. Now im scared of using my headphones...

 

for some of you this might work
reinstall drivers but unplug your headphones when installing the new drivers

 

The problem is with the ribbon cable. Its a known issue with these hp dv's.

 

I know this might sound ridiculous, but Here it goes. I have a DV9408nr or generically a Dv9000 HP laptop and i have been trying to get the sound to work since one day it just stopped. I took the entire computer apart, wiggles some connectors, bought a new speaker off ebay for $4, and in turn I ruined the connector to the on board switch, ironically enough, I got mad and banged on the laptop near the mouse pad three times pretty solid but not hard enough to break anything and all of a sudden the sound started to work, I think there maybe a miss connection or glitch on the motherboard but it seems a little bit of vibratory manipulation seems to fix the issue.
