    Hi all,

I've just bought my first ever Laptop at the tender age of 24. I've been a desktop enthusiast for about 15 years and love tinkering with all things computers. I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to jump on the Notebook bandwagon, but there you go.

Anyway, the Laptop in question is a second-hand dv9005us. 17", 1GB Ram, 100GB HD etc. Standard spec I think. Anyway, the first thing I'm going to do is stick a new HD in it, probably 250GB. I'm safe in assuming it's a standard 2.5" SATA notebook drive, right?

Also, officially it only supports 2GB ram. However I found in my searching on the net a few people who had theirs running 3GB. Basically, if I was to stick two 2GB sticks in there (so 4GB total) would their be any chance of it working? I know on my desktop MB if I put too much RAM in it just won't post, but I didn't know if anyone had experience with this particular notebook?

    Thanks!

    Dave

What OS are you running. Only 64 bit OSs can use over 3GB of memory.

Yes you can insert 2x2gb sticks in there but your chipset/os will only address 3gb maximum.

Thanks for the reply, I'm running a dual boot 32bit XP and 64bit Vista. Even in a 64-bit OS will the chipset max out at 3GB?

    Thanks!

No, with 64bit you'll be able to use 4GB fine, if that's what you're asking.

Excellent, that's what I'd hoped. I just wanted to make sure the MB chipset and BIOS would recognise the RAM in the first place before I forked out for it.
