I've just purchased a brand new HP Pavilion dv9235nr notebook. It's sitting here right beside me UNOPENED. The reason it is unopened is because my brother-in-law says HP notebooks are crappy machines and that we should have gotten an apple Macbook instead. Every review we have come across for the HP Pav has been a positive one and honestly don't see why an apple macbook would be much better than the notebook we have already purchased. What should we do? Return our HP and get an apple macbook instead? (p.s. we do have a $1500.00 budget and from what we have been told, that amt would be enough for a "refurbished" macbook)

Stay with the HP without a doubt. They are solid machines. I have the "cousin" of the dv9000, the dv6000 and its great, you won't be disappointed. Everything everyone said in your original post is correct and I agree with them. Since your interested in playing some games on the computer you are going to need a pc, Macs aren't gaming machines. Also your saving 700 dollars by going with the HP.

Man... Open that box. Do it now!!! You will not be disappointed. Especially if its a Vista Machine. The 9xxx with Vista preloaded blend seamlessly together.
I just got my custom built dv9000z and I can't put it down. It's got a nice black and silvery color tone that looks sleek. It's not clunky and its surprisingly thin!!! The Macbooks have a good and stable OS (from what I've read) but its for the simple folks. They are good, I suppose for multimedia applications (They do those well). But, Nowadays, there is really no difference between the mac and the PC as far as multimedia is concerned. The PC can do them just as good and simply as the Mac. My HP handles all my multimedia files perfectly.

If your PC has Windows XP I might tell you to consider the macbook a little more seriously because of its outstanding OS, but with Vista, there is no need. You will have compatibility with most applications with the HP. And the Viruses? just get some AntiVirus software. Norton Antivirus with Internet Security (59.99) is the best, but I use Windows Live One Care, because its cheaper, and they license it for use with 3 computers. That, coupled with the security and stability of Windows Vista will give you the most advanced, secure, and visually sleekest OS to date. Add that to the sleekness of the the HP design (I think they look better than the macbooks personally) and you got yourself one worthy PC.

hehe when i read the title i wondered if you really meant an ACTUAL apple lol

nothing wrong with an HP, in fact there are quite a few BAD things that can be noted about the new macs (design flaws and the like). besides why wud u settle for a second hand mac when u can get a brand new, modern and fast HP??

and regarding XP or Vista, it doesnt matter in the end cuz if u got it with XP then u shud be able to get the free upgrade and if u got it with vista then thats all good then!

    Now go open the box!!!

if you up the ante to about 2K, i would say DEFINETLY get a macbook pro over the hp. regular macbooks are garbage.

Actually, don't forget to add on the extra money to get 2 gigs of ram and extended warranty. Which you'll want.

In the end why spend $500+ more on a mac which can do pretty much the same as what you have now for less? build quality? HP is just fine for that. OS usability? aint that hard to use XP or vista and it can do all ur usual stuff and runs fine. stick with the HP, dont spend more for something that is essentially the same unless ur a real mac freak

Cool!! You have made a wise decision. So, what are your impressions? What OS are you running? What are the specs?

You made the right choice. Originally I planned as you do to get a refurb Macbook Pro but I am glad I chose HP.
