I'm wondering if there is a way to control or increase the fan speed on my hp dv9700t laptop. I had the graphics chip fail last summer and had not used it much last Fall, but I want to be able to use the PC without worries of it overheating again and I can't find anything to keep the fan speed up. I have a cooling pad but it doesn't seem to do much compared to the internal fan (when it goes on high the system cools down very fast, it just rarely ever comes on high).

I read a thread here about changing ACPI throttling but it linked to a program that no longer existed. The main problem with the dv9700t is that the fan changes speeds due to CPU temp but the thing overheating is the GPU. I took the computer apart and the CPU and GPU are on two different heatsinks, the GPU heatsink only getting intake airflow. With the CPU cool the GPU can easily overheat without the system even noticing because of HP's pathetic design.

Just heat-gunned GPU chip on friend's laptop (1 long 2 short beep problem) and was looking for fan control for this laptop to prevent issue from reoccuring. Couldn't find anything. I did, however, find methods that control fan speed in DSDT table. So it is possible to examine and edit it to make fan rotate at the speed we want. It should also be easy to figure out which Embedded Controller (EC) registers control the fan and it is then possible to set custom fan speed by writing custom values.

I will not be working on this, but if someone is interested, I have attached ACPI Tables dump created via RWEverything. Just search for "FAN" in the file and you will find fan control methods :D

    Good luck!
