I am looking forward to purchasing the HP dv9700z. However, for a 17 inch, the graphics card (nVidia 8600 M) doesn't seem enough. Is it possible to upgrade it to a 8800 GTX? Will HP be updating these notebooks with more powerful video cards in June/July when the Montevina processors come out? What is the performance and the battery life like on these notebooks? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated! :)

It's not possible to upgrade it yourself, or send it in to hp so that they can upgrade it, as it's soldered to the motherboard.

HP might be updating it, but I doubt it'll be to a 8800m GTX.

Nothing is known about the montevina notebooks right now.

Next time, read the stickies before making a post, as there your first question was answered. Thanks ^^.

Fara, you are quite wrong. All you have to do is buy the desktop version of the 8800 GTX and dislodge your DVD drive, and stick it in there. It works quite well.

no, he's just kidding. It's the keyboard you remove.

But in all serousness, it's not possible.

Really? I'm surprised. The Gateway P series is a 17 inch and has an 8800 GTX video card. I thought that HP was a much better company than Gateway. Why won't they update it? The 8800GTX will not only make the notebook perform a lot better-it will also 'future-proof' the notebook since technology is always advancing and changing. I wouldn't want to get a new notebook in the next two years... :(

It's not really surprising. THe Dv9000 series wasn't made with the thermal envelope of an 8800m in mind. And it's not meant to be a gaming laptop. Hp has none right now (one is maybe coming in the future). It was meant to be a notebook with large scree and a decent-ish GPU. Aka, an Allrounder

Ok. But will the HP dv9700z be able to play games like Age of Empires 3, Oblivion, Call of Duty 4, Quake etc. without a problem? (At least 30-40 fps) I also want to configure my notebook with the blue-ray player-so will the quality be great with the 8600m?

I would get the HDX, but it is way too big and heavy! If HP made a 17 inch notebook with the same features as the HDX, that would be awesome! :D

Fabarati, what are your preferences for notebooks with great performance? (Dell,HP,Sony etc.) I am trying to make my final decision. This is going to be my first notebook.

Bluray will be no probs. Those games will play at medium to high settings, 30-40 FPS, but only if you play it on a lower than native resolution (like 1280x800).

Do you know any other notebooks with a good reputation and excellent performance? I am trying to make my final decision. This is going to be my first notebook! How's your Asus? I've heard of the company before. How's the performance? I heard that Asus has a lot of fan problems and overheating on their notebooks. Is this true?

It's ok. bit thick, bit loud, not really warm, crappy batterylife.

If I were you I'd post a thread in What notebook should I buy. Don't forget to fill in the FAQ

However, keep an eye out for Clevo M860TU.

I already filled out an FAQ and made a thread in 'what notebook should I buy?' It wasn't very reliable. I heard that the Clevo M860TU is coming too. It seems like a great notebook. Is the brand really reliable? I mean, does it have a good reputation for its notebook?

Yes, clevo is reliable. However, it's an ODM, so it doesn't sell it's notebooks directly. They use resellers, who rebrand them (sage, eurocom etc.). More info can be found on the clevo faq in the sager and clevo forums.

Could you link me to your thread, by the way?

I checked the Sager website before. Their notebooks seem excellent (build quality, screen, features) after reading many reviews. I am not familiar on how to link you to my thread. By the way, you're Swedish right?

Where can an end user buy the Clevo M570TU? Surely some company will sell it to the general public, or can it be obtained in Japan? My brother in law is going there on a business trip...he can pick it up if it is available.

that has to do with hp under clocking it in the first place...

i can play at 500/400/1000 full everything, but it's like running at 1-2 percent(out of 100 percent) lag at times
but running at 600/425/1200 and higher...game runs fine.

i can run it at almost all high at 1920x1200. some missions at full high, but them helicopter mission...no way!..lol

It's not out yet. Won't be out for a while, methinks. You can get clevos from resellers, like Sager & Eurocom. Read more in the Clevo Guide.

Also, I'm not really sure that Japan is ahead of Europe/Korea/North America/Taiwan in laptops. I mean, many are desgined in Taiwan, and new technology launches are mostly worldwide. There's not much to be ahead of, now is there?

It's still proves my point. I said he can play does games at medium to high settings, depending on the game. The go7700 is just about the same amount of power as a 8600M GS, and I played oblivion on high, 1440x900, at between 18-ish fps (n the forest to 40+ indoors.

Check this out and then tell me if you think product is released at the
same time. I can not speak for Europe but we don't have a lot of these things
here or are only now just getting some like the Asus Eee PC and ours is the 4gig version, not the 8. I read an article that stated Japanese companies look at their home market as a testing ground, releasing what we would call "beta" product to the consumers in an effort to gauge how it will be welcomed. If he can get one, anyone interested???

Oh, rumours say 1st of may (though that just might be hte M860TU, and even then just pre-orders). Clevo is not a japanese company. It is not out yet, as it is a Centrino 2 (montevina) notebook, and intel has to launch the platform first.
