I did a clean Vista install on my new dv9858, and the only thing I don't seem to have installed yet is the drivers for the BD-ROM drive. Windows sees it as only a DVD-RW drive.

What do I need to do to get it to be recognized as a BD-ROM drive?

Before you did your clean install, did you backup the c:\swsetup folder? I didn't see a driver for your BD-ROM on the HP support website, but they might have included it in the folder. I tend to use the drivers listed on the HP website specific to the unit, but you can try running Windows Update and see if it finds a suitable driver.

If all else fails, you can contact HP support.

I did make a copy of swsetup, but nothing that I installed from there seemed to change the DVD-RW to BD-ROM. So I went to do a ssytem recovery to return to factory settings to see what the hardware manager said about the BD-ROM driver. But now I get an error when I try to do a recovery. HP customer support says they are going to send me complimentary recovery discs.

I'm trying to do a clean install from a Anytime Upgrade disc again, and see if I can figure it out again.

I seem to get CRC errors when I use the SWSetup DVD I made though. Not good.

Can some one go to device manager for their BD-ROM drive and tell me what the driver details are? Maybe that will tell me what I need to install.

On my DV9774ca in device manager, under DVD/CD ROM Drives says Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500A ATA Device.
Driver tab says Microsoft driver 21/06/2006. version 6.0.6001.18000.

The Driver Detail button tells me C:\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys

Additionaly, this is the same driver installed on my desktop computer with a 3 year old LG DVD burner.
