I replaced the original battery in my almost two year old HP dx7-3085dx with a $40 generic 8 cell a couple months ago. Now it won't boot off the battery. When booted while plugged in, works fine, but if I unplug it so it has to run off the battery, it shuts down, dead black screen, but the battery shows 98% available (plugged in, charging). New battery again? No more $40 generic 8 cells. Should I buy $100 HP branded 8 cell or $70 generic "Pro" 12 cell battery? I make my living CAD drawing on this computer and cannot send it in.

It seems like a battery issue and you should replace it. However, i wouldn't buy an original one, it's a waste of money. Buy a replacement one, but invest a bit more than 40$ on a 8 cell battery. I can promise you that if a website sell an 8 cells battery for 40$ - the cells inside the battery are not of high quality.
