Now that I got your attention. Its true!

Here is the deal. I have a new dv7 that was shipped with 64bit home premium. I did not realize at the time that 64bit wont work for me because some of the programs I use for work just dont work with it. I have the same programs running on 32bit vista on this same laptop as a dual boot but I am still on the 30 day trial. So what I need is for HP to get me a activation code that will work on a retail install disk of Home Premium 32bit.

HP WILL NOT HELP ME AT ALL!!! So in the conversation with one of the online "support" people they said this:

Shyla : Bryan, the Operating System and applications which with the notebook at time of purchase are of free cost and HP never charge for any software application or software that shipped with the notebook at time of purchase.

    Shyla : let me explain.

Bryan : hahaha....your telling me Microsoft allows you to give away the OS without licensing fees? now thats a good one. Trust me I paid for the license with I purchased this laptop. its in the cost

Shyla : Bryan, the Operating System product keys are unquie key, for each every Operating System you will receive receive separate key each Operating System disks.

Shyla : Bryan, HP do not charge for Operating System lincese which shipped with notebook it is complete free of cost.

Use the key on the bottom on your notebook, that will also work for 32bit.

from what i have read in the past the number on the bottom is an OEM number and will not activate a retail disk version of vista. I have tried and it says its invalid.

Borrow a 32-bit disc from a friend and follow the directions in this thread. Worked like a charm for me and many others.

It works ive done it before. All the Vista install discs are the same, its just the key you enter that separates them.

    Read the clean install guide

thanks for the link...I have a problem. I dont have the OEM installed and activated on this laptop anymore...or the HP recovery partition. SOOO I cant backup the key as the walkthru explains. But once I do get it up and running I will do this for sure.

So I guess my option is to call Microsoft? HP is obviously of no help

All you need to do is get your hands on a 32bit vista disc. the key on the bottom of your laptop will activate it.

You should be able to find it if you search around the usual places, and google of course.

can anyone get me a copy of the recovery cds? I made the mistake of not making one when I started this computer up and now it appears I am in need of them. And HP wants to charge me $50 CDN for them!!!

Make sure its correct. It will say its been used before you have to use activate by phone but you will get it done. I have done this many many times on all of my laptops i know it works.
