My HP Pavilion dv5139us hard drive is making and grinding noise when accessing data. They told me i have to bring it in for replacement. Any one can tell me the "actual" time it might take to replace the hard drive, so as to know when to send it in? They told me 5-7 days but i hardly believe that. Are their any problems anyone encountered in returning their notebook or parts?
Thanks.

The main thing is to backup all your data first since HP (wisely) isn't going to attempt to copy it. It shouldn't take more than 5-7 days since all HP has to do is swap a new drive in and reload the OS from recovery DVDs.
If it were me I'd see if HP will let you send in just the drive, then I'd order a nicer drive from Newegg, do a clean WinXP install without HP's bloatware, and eBay the replacement drive from HP when it got here. If HP balks, the HD manufacturer might replace the drive under their warranty but that takes several weeks. This approach is not the most cost effective way to go though. -
ma systems hdd (in the sig)was gonna fail too it started giving warning messages at bootup so i returned it to an authorzed dealer for the swap i made backup discs and copied in the swsetup folder too ....just in case to be on the safer side it took me 35 mins ot backp all my data ....
it has been 2 days since i had given it for the swap and the status on their website say....waitin for parts
guess ill have to wait a bit more and c
i kno they wont take more than 4-5 days max
all the best
cheers,
