    I'm pretty sure that means you need a new hard drive.

    Download HDtune and check the SMART health. Also do a full HD scan.

    Could be a false positive. Its happened to me in the past. My other HD's were failing the test and they were perfectly fine.

    just ran dos SMART monitor many life critical "*"
    any recommendations on how to extract data before sending it "home" ?

    Its definately failing then.

    Shove it on a external USB enclosure and see if even gets detected. Sounds like its in very bad health.

    I've used FindNTFS before. I forget the command line option to bring up the user interface, that makes it much easier to use. Anyhow, take out your HD, plug it into a USB adapter so you can read it from another machine, and use FindNTFS to recover what you can.

    If you're lucky SpinRite can resurrect the drive long enough to recover your data, or repair enough damage for FindNTFS to have more success. It's not cheap but it's very good.

    ok last update using hiren boot cd managed to correct all errors, managed to boot into windows and backup everything. will get a new drive pronto.
