just started up my Hp laptop for the first time

all icons on the desktop and folders hav some weird check box on the top left of it when i hover over it, when i click anywhere on the icon/folder, the check box gets ticked, if i double click the shortcut/folder is opened as it should. Is it possible to get rid of these check boxes?

It's in "Folder and Search Options" / View Tab, Advanced settings... 'use check boxes to select items'... uncheck and your problem is solved.
