on a battery related note, i've also had my new dv7 for a couple weeks and haven't put in the battery yet. since this is only being used as a desktop for now i've read that even when it's plugged in it's still slowly sapping away the battery's overall life so because it's brand new opted to just leave it wrapped up until i absolutely need it. any problems with this? could the opening that normally holds the battery underneath be too exposed to dust now or anything?

Thats how its on almost all current HP laptops. They only display the percent charge remaining not the time. If you want to get an estimate of time remaining then use a utility like Battery bar...

Li-ion batteries do have a life span, so whether its in the laptop not getting used or stored elsewhere battery capacity will still decrease albeit a bit more slowely then if it is left inside the notebook. Personally, I would just leave it in the laptop and use it once in a while even if the laptop spends most of its time plugged in.

I Second the use of Battery Bar, it also tells you the wear on your battery.

HP laptops don't show battery time. Just found out. Yes I too use batterybar. It shows the time left.
