I currently own an HP Pavilion DV4-2040US (the one in my sig). I went away from home for one day and when I came back it no longer works properly. When I turn it on, all the touch sensitive buttons light up, but the CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK key leds continously blink every 3-4 seconds. The screen remains blank and nothing shows. The lights keep blinking until I turn the system off.

    What could be the problem?

Just throwing a thought out there, but did you have it plugged in the whole time you were away? Any significant weather or storms in your area? I know there has been alot of "heat lightning" here in the mid-west during the nights.

Nope, I unplugged it before I left. When I came back it was also unplugged, and there wasn't any storms in the area. I left it on my desk where I always use it and where its at 90% of the time.

Could this be an issue with the ram? Maybe I have to reseat them?

    Thanks for the help.

Edit: I was away for one day.

    hiya,

try taking the battery out, give it a few (5-10) minutes then plug it in (with the battery out), and restart the system.

most times it is the bios not being happy with something when it's been on sleep for too long.

sleep states sometimes leave the system in crashed mode, it's a hardware issue that still sneaks about to this day.

Do you heard the fan come on?

Most mobos these days, laptop and desktop, have fan rpm checks for the cpu fan. If the cpu fan is detected as failed, the machine won't turn on.

I tried disconnecting everything and turning It on with only the ac adapter and that didn't fix it (it was disconnected without the ac adapter over night).

I didn't notice if the fans came on or not, but will check for that.

I did a few researching and found out about HP led codes. The led codes are suppose to blink a number times to tell you what the error is. The problem is my caps lock and num lock blink once and about 3 seconds blinks again, then 3 seconds and blinks again, and 3 seconds and blinks again; and continues to blink every 3 seconds until I manually turn it off.

I turned on the laptop on again today. The fan did start to spin, but after about 2-3 seconds the fans stopped and the buttons started blinking.

So what does your blinking LED error message tell you?

I'm not sure because on HP's website the error codes go up to six blinks but mine just keep blinking and blinking until I hold the power button and turn it off.

Thanks for the help, but I've tried that many times with no luck.
