My laptop has a Blu-ray player. Until recently I hadn’t used it, but I recently bought a Blu-ray and wanted to try it out. When I place it in the drive it booted up and DVD play started. It then said that DVD play needed some updates, so I went to download them. It then said it was installing quick play and asked for auto removal of DVD Play 3.5, so I ok’d that. I let it do its thing and then it said it was installing HP DVD play (I assume newer version.) I let it finish and then tried my Blu-ray once more. Straight away, it asked for the same updates to be installed again even though I’d just done it.

I then did some investigating online and found that I might need another program in order to play the Blu-ray despite the fact that I have a Blu-ray drive. So I downloaded the trial version of Cyberlink’s Power DVD (version 10.) It looked good, although I wasn’t impressed with the price tag, given that I had assumed a Blu-ray would just play on my computer without investing in additional programs! Anyway, I put the Blu-ray in the player and Power DVD said it was “loading” the Blu-ray. Then I suddenly got a message, “cannot locate storage device. Please choose another device when playback ends.” I had no idea what this meant. My Blu-ray continued loading. Then I got “internal error 800401F9.” I clicked on it and then the Blu-ray stopped loading and it returned to the power DVD screen. I repeated the process and the same thing happened.

So I suppose my question is two-fold:

#1 Will I need a program such as Power DVD in order to play my Blu-rays?
#2 Why won’t my Blu-ray play on power DVD? How do I fix this.

My OS is Windows Vista Home. Laptop is about two years old.

Any replies would be totally appreciated!
