I have been checking this daily as HP first promised mid-November and later early-December. The link for ordering is finally up.

Why is the only option a 32 bit, I thought if you have a core2 your supposed to run the 64bit, or do i not know what the hell Im talking about? Somebody please explain this.
-
A Core2Duo is capable of supporting 64-bit and 32-bit. I think that the issue is that the 32-bit is all that they are offering up as a free upgrade, hoping that the real tech savvy people who care about going 64-bit will shell out the extra money and buy it. I'm kind of annoyed about not having the option to get it through them as well, but I think it's a set decision.
-
bw1985,
1: Someone said both versions are on the disc... guess we'll find out if that is true..
2: With the Core 2 Duo you can run either a 32 bit OS, or 64... Your not "supposed" to run 64...
3: Just an idea... Maybe MS is going to charge extra for the 64 bit version? offering the 32 bit version free, (as your system shipped with a 32 bit OS), upcharging for the 64-bit version?

I got "An unrecoverable error has occured, please try again later" when I tried to order my upgrade.
The license key had better work on 64-bit Vista, regardless of whether or not they actually ship an install disc with 64-bit on it, or I'm going to be very annoyed. -
-
If both versions were on the disk, I feel like it would say that instead of specifically mentioning it's the 32-bit version.

I do believe that MS will ship both the 32 and 64 bit units on each CD, no extra charge, unless you order "Starter" in which case you will only get the 32 bit version. Be aware though that if you do order the "Starter" version, Steve Ballmer will personally come to your house and *****slap you until you purchase the "Ultimate" version.
-
4cefed4,
There was only so much space in the "sig" for info.
Costco orders go to the same factory, as you noticed your unit was shipped direct from CHINA if it was CTO'd.
Keep in mind this time of year there are bound to be delays... and since it's HP factory when the factory is running wide open HP orders will take preference...
As you may have noticed Costco stopped accepting orders for CTO units for a week or two?... and I would think during that time frame HP would be getting their orders filled. (first in line)
Regardless a few days off is well worth the trade off for a180 day return window...

Has anybody actually been able to order their copy??
The first time I tried I got to the part where it wanted my address etc. But it said that my country/state/postal code didn't match.
The second time I tried it told me that my COA ID was invalid. And now it just says An unrecoverable error has occured, please try again later. -
I tried to get my "order" entered and all it did was bounce me back saying the "tax service is unavailable at this time" then the last time I got the "unrecoverable error message". It makes me hope the web server isn't running Vista and this is a prelude.
I bought my dv9000 from Best Buy in case anyone was trying to figure out if the store you enter has anything to do with it. -
In any case the website is not too well organised but if my shipment arrives when it is supposed to arrive that is what I care about. -
I don't know. This site seems a bit suspicious to me. I thought the following was the website you can order your Vista, but you can't order it yet.
http://h20219.www2.hp.com/services/cache/427068-0-0-225-121.html?jumpid=go/windowsvistaupgrade
But then we have some shady website where you can already order, if you can call it ordering, as it keeps giving you an error and telling you to try again.
And then the second time i tried it told me that my COA ID number was invalid.....WTF. -
-
That would have been pretty shady if I set up a fake website to collect everyones serial #s and windows COAs, although I don't know what I'd even do with them. -
I tried it today around 3:00PM and worked fine in first try. Now they told me to send proof of purchase and other documents. However I didn't know that HP is offering only 32-bit version because I thought we can have option to choose between 64bit and 32bit.
-
-
All I get is "Invalid COA ID Number XXXXX-XXX-XXX-XXX "
Then I got
"We're sorry but we are unable to validate your COA Number. Please contact Customer Service by clicking here"
Gave up
I have a Compaq Presario v3000z -
-
Yea, same here. From what I gather it was working earlier today, as even I got past the COA id thing. But it told me later on that my postal code/state did not match. I emailed them about it, so hopefully they will work it out tommorow during business hours. Try again tommorow night and see if they can get their act together.
-
Are you guys entering the correct ID's? The COA ID's they are asking for is not your product key but is the ID number which should be located just above/below the barcode on the Win XP sticker(location varies)
-
yep - even checked the pictures they show you to make shure
-
yup doesnt work.....bummer..
-
always "Invalid COA ID Number" sigh...
what should i do? -
yep, they must be overloaded or something - I think we will just have to wait
any one know if it will kill your old key, as far as online activation,
- I know they dont want you using both copys, but what if you
dont like vista after you activate it, -
well, i guess and hope they won't do that... coz they are totally different OS, not just an update actually.
-
Wow... The website worked just fine for me this morning. Maybe it's fixed?
One question though, the confirmation e-mail says " For your order to be fulfilled, you must submit (by mail, facsimile or scan and email) your receipt for the qualifying PC, together with the online confirmation number listed on this page, to the following address or facsimile number: "
What receipt are they talking about? The order confirmation?, the shipping confirmation?, the packing slip? -
I guess they ask for the "Online order receipt" under your order history, if you ordered it from HP online store.
btw, anyone knows what to do with the "Invalid COA ID Number" problem? -
Send them everything if you have doubt what to send, or you've purchased thru a vendor that doesn't give you a receipt.
Another thought on the above is to call /contact whomever you're dealing with to verify as anything said here is hearsay. -
what if i got my hp 4 days before the deadline for vista upgrade?
-
Thanks for the suggestions. I decided to use the info from my order history at HP. It's the only thing I have that actually says "receipt" on it.
icekoala,
Are you sure you're entering the right code? The COA is the number just above the bar code which is just above the Product Key on the bottom of your notebook (I am assuming you have XP MCE). -
No.. He's entering the right number, I have the same problem. Why does it seem that everything that Microsoft touches turns to crap.
-
For those questioning the 32-bit/64-bit issue, the Express Upgrades are not the same as full Vista install discs. Microsoft and the various manufacturers have to provide upgrade support on a product they are essentially giving away. The kits that will be sent out will be 32-bit only kits if your XP installation is 32-bit and 64-bit Buisness Edition only if your original OS was XP x64 Edition. These kits will include instructions on how to perform an upgrade installation only, and will include all of the drivers needed for the specific system. The product key they give you "may" work for a 64-bit installation, but you'll need to get the an install disc and drivers yourself and perform a clean install with no technical support from HP or Microsoft.
Also, on current notebooks, there are only a VERY few business notebooks that HP is currently supporting 64-bit Windows on. When Vista drivers are posted on their website for all other notebooks, there will likely not be full drivers available for Vista x64 -- and Vista x64 will not be a "supported" OS. Over time, we should be able to get all the drivers we need (hopefully) but I wouldn't bet on HP providing them to us. -
Well, it's the second day that i've tried to place my order, but still i get either an error and telling me to try again later, or that invalid COA# message. Who's to say it won't be so in three months time when the upgrade campaign draws closer to it's end? But just in case i sent them an email asking them why my COA is invalid. Will see if anyone bothers to send me a reply.
-
omg. second day of trying also and still getting the invalid COA crap. hahaaha so unprofessional.
-
I'm trying to figure out if i even need a Windows that uses 12GB of disk space minimum and eats RAM memory like crazy. But since i already do gualify to receive my copy of Windows Vista for free, then it would be foolish to just let that opportunity go to waste.
-
yep still getting "Invalid COA ID Number"
-
richard13
yep, i am pretty much sure i got the correct COA#, which fits the blanks on that web page very well. unfortunately, it's still invalid.
today, I tried to call 800-817-5602 supposed to be exclusively for Vista express upgrade support, but answer machine told me to call back on working days. sigh... yep soooooo unprofessional! -
I think I've figured out what the invalid COA ID problem is. This morning I was checking to see if the site was working and instead of putting 646 as a section of my id, I put 464. Weird thing is.. IT WORKED!! So I thought that I would try again with 464, and no go, It didn't work anymore. So anybody who has correctly entered their COA ID and then had the server screw up on them and have to re-enter it, it won't work. We probably have to e-mail them telling them to allow our ID again.
-
At lease in the US and Canada you can try to get the upgrade. Over here in the EU we still can't!
As for being only a 32-bit version, is crappy as hell for all us 64-bit buyers! -
After enough poeple call in about this coa crap they may fix it.
-
Yeah--same thing "invalid coa Number". I e-mailed them, we'll see what happens. If anyone hears anything please reply in this thread. Thanks!!
joecon -
Yes exactly! The very first time i tried my COA went through, but in the next window i encountered an error, and after that my COA is invalid. -
Im having the same COA issues...Initially when I tried to place my order it didn't give me the Invalid COA number...got my mailing address...gave me some error about tax something...so I had to start from scratch, and that is when the COA errors started.
I'm sure I've got the right number...I suppose I will be calling the 800 number tomorrow. -
let me get this straight...the free HP Express Upgrade to Vista is only the 32 bit version?
What a crock of ****.

Then you aren't eligible. Hence the deadline. You van buy your upgrade at any store and download the drivers/software off of HP's website. -
Not much you can do about it. the cut off date was Oct. 26 for every manufacturer.
-
Well I called the vista upgrade 800 number and told them about the invalid coa. The woman told me that once you enter the code you cannot reenter it. She said they are working on a fix for this and it may be ready by friday. There is one caveat, I guess the woman was in india or thereabouts and I had an EXTREMELY hard time understanding her!! They need to make sure that the operators can speak UNDERSTANDABLE English before hiring them.
HP link for ordering Windows Vista Upgrade kits now up
