Jus got a nc6400 from hp few days ago. noticed some ticking noise coming from the machine. basically there are about four faint ticks then about 5 sec pause then some more ticks.

the ticks do not happen all the time.

i ran chkdsk /f and widows said errors had been corrected. i then ran chkdsk from windows to double check and it said there was errors with file system and to run chkdsk /f to fix it. "free space was marked as allocated in the maser file table (MFT) bitmap. correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap. windows found errors with the filesystem". also done disk defragment. just about to reboot the machine to check if it solves the problem.

i recorded the clicking sounds from the laptop microphone, if anyone wants to hear it i will upload it.

im not sure if its the HD or if its sumfin else

    any help appreaciated!

ran it again from windows and it found errors in index entries .... and said that i shud run chkdsk again.

I think those clicks might be from the hard drive. If the integrated microphone is picking them up, check and see if that port is near the hard drive bay. If it is, I'm sure that is it. I've heard that the nc8430's mic (which I haven't used yet) will pick up HDD noise as well.

Regarding the hard drive itself though: you might want to download a utility like Everest Home Edition or Notebook Hardware Control and check up on the SMART status of the drive. If there are any problems with it, they will probably show up in the results of that status update.

I have the nc6400 as well and I think you are hearing the hard drive (parking the heads? I'm no expert on that but I've heard this before). Pretty common although I'll admit this drive is particularly noticeable...I've started not to notice it after a couple weeks...better than the high pitch noise that came from my old dell.
