I just got my HP NC6400 and found that 12GB of my 40GB HD has been used for the window xp professional and some pre-installed software. I wonder how come these files occupy some much space. How could I delete these files? Window XP only allows me to delete a few number of softwares that can hardly increase the space of my HD.![]()
Thank you very much for your advice

If it is that size, then I think you are talking about the 'Recovery Partition'. I would suggest you create your restore discs first an then proceed to delete the recovery partition

Thank you Trini Tech
I'm not talking about HP Recovery, which occupies an extra 5GB of my HD. On top of that, I have 12 GB occupied by window xp and some unknown files. How can I deal with it? -
The SWSetup folder could be occupying a good bit(~3 - 4GB) of the extra space. It basically contains all the installation files for the pre-installed software & drivers that ships with your laptop. I would suggest keeping it since it can come handy in the case you quickly need those files and arent able to access the web.

it's hard to file through all the threads, but i've only found partial threads on how to create restore disks...

I found that I can delete 2-3 GB SW setup. But the pre-installed XP and some system files still occupy 5-6 GB of my HD space. Is there anyway that I can re-install the xp or delete some system files?
Thank you

I would not delete the SW Setup folder until you have backed it up to a DVD. It contains the drivers and apps for your machine.
As for the 6GB footprint, that sounds a tad high for XP (but not Vista). Have you went into Add/Remove Programs and deleted the bloatware that you won't be using? There is a ton of stuff on these units, most of which is useless.
Just don't delete any driver packages, such as wireless, processor, video etc...
