I've got a HP Pavilion dv6000 notebook. It's got an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 1.7GHz Processor TK-53 with 1GB DDR2 667MHz RAM. The graphics processor is nVIDIA GeForce Go 6150. I get rather choppy HD video playback. Like if I try to watch a movie trailer in HD the video playback is quite far from smooth-I generally use the apple movie trailer website. Can someone with the same graphics processor as mine please check if they have such problems too? Even if the rest of you're specs are slightly different, like better processor or more system memory, please check & tell me whether the videos work fine when watched like that. I am talking only about HD videos. Alternatively you could go to www.gametrailers.com & check any of the HD videos from that website too. With gametrailers.com I've tried flash, quicktime & windows media but neither work fine when tried to be watched in the browser itself. I have to save the file to my hard drive & play the video through Windows Media Player & then it works absolutely fine. Oh btw my notebook is running Windows Vista Home Premium.

So the playback is only choppy when you try to watch it online? Have you made sure that it's done buffering when you try to play it?

Yup when watched online in the browser or when Quicktime is used the playback is choppy. Buffering is complete before I play it. I need someone with a notebook running the same graphics processor & Vista to try it out & tell me whether it worked fine for them or not.

You do realize that the 6150 doesn't handle HD playback, right? It's a function of your processor.

Now that is something I wasn't aware of. So, what do you reckon the problem is? Are the specs of the notebook not good enough? That would be weird because how can I play the HD videos after saving them to my hard disk using Windows Media Player perfectly fine then?

Since you can play them fine in your hard drive, my guess is that there's a software bug when trying to play it directly from the website, perhaps it's not getting enough CPU power allocated to it or something.

Dbl check if its really a 6150 graphic chip. HP made lots of mistake stated as 6150 but fact is a 6100 graphic chip.

Download the latest drivers by going the HP site. There are newer ones there compared to what HP Update offers.

Open up the task manager and watch the processor allocation to see if your processor is maxxed out. See which processes are sucking up resources.

Care to elaborate on this? I'm aware that CPU-Z sees it as a 6100, but it also can't tell the difference between an nForce 410 & 430 southbridge........

FYI - if you have downloaded file on your hard drive and it is choppy via Media Center, try opening it in QuickPlay. It could be like live TV. Live TV is much better in Quickplay than Media Center for me. I like the Media Center interface but it seems like it is a classic MS pig of program.

Go into device manager and check the listing there. It shows as a 6150 for me so hopefully that will show the correct one for you too.

Which HD trailer did you'll watch; 480p, 720p or 1080p? Did you'll view the trailer in full screen?

Yes it's a 6150, I checked with Everest Ultimate Edition & even in Device Manager.

I was getting BSOD's every now & then, so I switched from the latest video driver that HP provided me (through HP Update, not the website) & installed the latest video driver Windows Update offers. Been fine since then, hopefully it'll stay that way, been fine for quite some time now. A little reluctant to switch back to HP provided drivers.

So, I contacted HP via their online chat option & the support agent said for me to download & install the DIVX player & all it's codec. That didn't help either.
I installed VLC Media Player & now the HD videos seem to be working fine, even in the browser itself. Weird. Although, if I watch a HD trailer in quicktime (through Apple movie trailer website) & try to watch it in full screen, it gets choppy again but if not in full screen it's perfect. Guessing that is to do with crappy quicktime on windows!? Only tried 720p with this, not the other two.

480p and 720p worked fine. 1080p is too big for 15.4 screen

If you have Quicktime Pro you can view the movie trailer in full screen mode. This is where the choppiness comes in. It works fine when it's viewed normally otherwise. Btw, what forceware version have you got installed (graphics driver)?
