HP's DV400 and Compaq's V4000t seems to have almost identical spec.

I heard that even in the same company, HP has the better quality materials than compaq's because it's the owner (and compaq is a co-owner) but I'm not 100% sure about this info.

If u like black go HP, If u like silver go Compaq lol

    BTW I'm using Compaq's V2000z tho

No difference at all. Only the case design and in some cases the price varies.

I don't mean to bash on Compaq, but it seems to me that the HP machines overall seems better built maybe and get some additional features.

For example, why can't the Compaq V2000 and V4000 get HP's Quickplay? And why'd they get rid of the Compaq version of HP's ZD8000, the X6000?

Just like Chevys and GMCs or Johnsons and Evinrudes. Same platforms with minor cosmetic and option choice differences. Usually Compacs are a bit less expensive.

HP owns Compaq, so they are the same company. HP now utilizes Compaq's production facilities, so their units are all the same. The have minor cosmetic changes to differentiate the 2 brands/models. They also have slightly different parts (eg. speakers) due to contractual agreements with some manufacturers before the merger.

Either unit is good and will provide you the same quality. It just comes down to what you want the unit to look like.

Is Compaq cheaper? I'm considering a version of the Compaq 2000z Is there an HP version that will be around same price? I do want the Lance Armstrong version. Don't want some athletes name inscribed on my laptop.

You're talking about the Compaq V2000Z series that can come with the Turion and Sempron processors right? Well, the HP equilvalent is their special edition Lance Armstrong L2000 series. Both these computers are the exact same on the inside.

I left out the word "Not" in my post.

"I do [NOT ]want the Lance Armstrong version. Don't want some athletes name inscribed on my laptop."

Well, they are both almost identical. I also don't like the L2000 because of the reason you stated. I'm not a fan of biking or Lance himself, though I applaud him for his amazing acheivements.

Look at ze2000t/z or dv1000. All of them come roughly the same price and similar specs. I personally prefer the look of the Compaq notebooks /v200z I mean/ but I had to hurry with my purchase and ordered l2005 because it was on stock.
If you are up for a Turion, then you have to choose between ze200z and v2000z but Pavilions do tend to be heavier. After all a Compaq IS more compact

I have that the HP Pavilions are very slightly heavier than their Compaq counterparts due to them having slightly thicker cases.

Same here, I wish the DV1000 had the ATI integrated card that the V2000Z has.
