I would like to install a fire wire card in my HP laptop. The thing had no instructions when I bought it so I dont know if the slot that the control slides in and out of that you use for movies is where I would insert this card. I can no longer use the movie control as I never made backup disks and I had to format my hd. Anyway, if there is anyone that can tell me if this is the place to put the firewire card, I would appreciate it.

Thanks for responding ImajinMyFX. It looks like it will stick out quite a bit than as that is not a very big slot. Do you think I would tell that much of a difference in speed if I hook up an external HD to a firewire or to USB? Thats why I am thinking of getting the firewire card, but if I am not going to notice than why waste the money I dont have. :D

you'll be fine with using usb. i have 3 external hard drives connected to my dv9000. i only use the firewire port when i want to transfer video from my camcorder.

Ok, this is probably a stupid question. I went ahead and bought an HP firewire card. I dont have anything yet to plug into it, the HD comes tomorrow so I wanted to be prepared. I decided to put the card in the slot and my computer is not recognizing it. This is the silly part-- do you have to actually have something plugged into the card before your computer recognizes it? Or should it recognize it anyway regardless of what is connected to the card? If it should recognize it anyway, what do I do next? Are there drivers I need to get? This should be plug and play. Thanks.

Ok, realized I didnt get an expresscard firewire card for the laptop. Got the HD and installed it using USB with no problems. It was assigned a drive and all was good. When I took back the wrong firewire card I got the right one. Came home and tried to hook up the firewire. Not working! It is recognizing the card I think as a Texas instruments 1394 cardbus, but no HD is under it in the sytem device. I dont know what I am doing wrong. I unplugged the firewire card and replugged the USB and now it is working again. Can anyone help me? Thank you.

No replies. I guess I will just take the card back.
